10 Movies to Look Forward to in 2014

- by Steve Garcia, 5 January 2014

A new year means a slew of new movies coming towards a theater near you, ladies and gents! While I could go on for days about the dozens of films I know will be great, here’s just a teensy taste of what 2014 will have to offer. Sit back and relax, Trash Muties! Here are ten movies you should be excited about for the New Year!

1. The Lego Movie
Picture
For the past couple of years, Lego has been getting increasingly more popular, so it’s only natural that it gets its own movie. At first glance, you would have probably expected something like the obvious cash grab (looking at you, Planes!), but after looking at the all-star voice cast and witnessing a damn impressive trailer, The Lego Movie is just one of those films that can’t come out fast enough. It looks incredibly charming, it knows exactly what kind of film it is, rather than trying to be something it’s
not, and (believe it or not) this is the first time Wonder Woman will be in a feature film! Starring the charismatic Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Morgan Freeman, Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, and Will Arnett (Batman!), The Lego Movie is slated for a February 7th release. Everything is awesome!

2. Muppets Most Wanted
Picture
2011’s The Muppets was a spectacular success in breathing life into the seemingly beaten franchise, so it was only a matter of time before audiences would be blessed with a sequel. Unfortunately, Jason Segal and Amy Adams will not be returning, but that shouldn’t be a huge factor because we’re going to the theaters for the Muppets themselves! And even if the human characters are what tickle your fancy, Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell, and the always lovely Tina Fey will all be co-starring alongside Kermit and the gang. It should also be noted that Bret McKenzie will be back as the film’s musician, so if nothing else, we’ll at least be promised that sweet, sweet soundtrack. Coming to theaters on March 21st, Muppets Most Wanted is going to be fantastic!

3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Picture
Kicking off the superhero films of 2014 is none other than the star-spangled man with a plan: Captain America. Based on the incredible story arc written by Ed Brubaker, the movie pits Captain America against The Winter Soldier: an outstanding assassin whom Cap can’t beat too hard because they have a complicated history. Being the ninth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the momentum is expected to stay strong, especially after the ginormous financial successes of both Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World. Also joining Cap on this more serious sequel will be the sexy Scarlet Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Cobie Smulders, Hayley Atwell, Samuel L. Jackson, and newcomers Robert Reford, and Anthony Mackie as Falcon. April 4th can’t come quick enough, so until then, gaze upon this badass trailer!

4. Transcendence
Picture
Following Captain America on April 18th, first-time director Wally Pfister will be granting audiences with Transcendence, a sci-fi action thriller starring Johnny Depp, Morgan Freeman, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy, and Paul Bettany.

While I could give you a long, winded explanation as to what exactly this movie is about, it wouldn’t do the excellence of the trailer justice. Trust me, Trash Muties: this movie’s going to be a huge hit! It’s the closest thing to a Brainiac movie and that’s awesome!

5. Godzilla
Picture
I am, without a doubt, in the camp of “not everything needs to be rebooted.” That being said, however, after the gargantuan mess that was the last Godzilla movie, anything that can save the monster’s life should be welcomed with open arms. This time around, there is absolutely no joke about the utter devastation that Godzilla left behind, and audiences will really feel the huge scope of it. Pacific Rim might have shown us a world ravaged by giant beasts, but the two-minute teaser for this movie multiplies that concept infinitely, and with only one monster (that we know of)! Starring Aaron Tyler-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Bryan Cranston, Godzilla hits theaters on May 16th. Until then, join me in mercilessly clicking the replay button on the trailer to hear that one and only roar of the beautiful Japanese icon.

6. X-Men: Days of Future Past
Picture
Before Marvel Studios showed us the Avengers, let us not forget that Bryan Singer’s X-Men was the first big-budget superhero flick to give us a full-fledged ensemble cast. Following the great X-Men: First Class and The Wolverine, Bryan Singer is back to direct the team in the seventh installment of the X-Men franchise: X-Men: Days of Future Past. While we don’t know a whole lot about the specifics of the film, we do know that the present-day world is ravaged by giant robots called Sentinels, and that Professor X and Magneto decide to send Wolverine to their past selves in order to help fix the future. Sure, it might deviate from the comic it was based on, but that won’t stop the movie from being a great installment to this roller coaster of a franchise. Starring almost everyone who’s ever been in an X-Men movie, along with newcomers such as Peter Dinklage as Bolivar Trask and Omar Sy as Bishop, this one comes out on May 23, just in time for Memorial Day weekend! WATCH THE TRAILER HERE.

7. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Picture
After the huge surprise of hit 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Fox listened to the money audiences spent and are giving us the sequel in this year’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. This one takes place eight years after the previous film, and gives us a look at what has become of the human race as the apes begin to take the world by storm. Andy Serkis’s portrayal of Caesar in the original film is the first time I can recall any sort of legitimate Oscar buzz for a motion capture performance, and in just the few seconds of what we saw of him in the latest trailer, it looks like that trend will continue in the biggest, baddest way. Also starring Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, and Keri Russel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is coming to theaters on July 11!

8. Guardians of the Galaxy
Picture
As long as Marvel keeps the ball rolling with interesting material, audiences will just eat it right up, and it looks like August 1st’s Guardians of the Galaxy will be the one to prove it wholeheartedly. Based on the more current iteration of the team, the film will be about its formation and will directly be connected to Thanos’s appearance in the Avengers as well as the brief after-credits sequence that followed Thor: The Dark World. While we do not have an official trailer as of right now to showcase the total insanity this movie will have to offer, it doesn’t take a genius to guess that: a) Marvel will make another hit, b) Chris Pratt was born to play the lead role, and c) Rocket Raccoon will be everyone’s favorite critter of the year. Alongside Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, and Vin Diesel make up the rest of the team, and they’ll be joined by a slew of incredible actors including Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan,Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close.

9. Interstellar
Picture
Christopher Nolan is back in a big bad way and he’s doing space this time! While I am a huge fan of his acclaimed Dark Knight trilogy, my personal favorite work from him was 2010’s Inception, and this is looking to be right up that same ally. Unfortunately (or fortunately, if you like surprises like myself), much of the film’s story is kept under wraps, but we do know that it will involve travel between time and space. If you thought last year was a good year for Matthew McConaughey with the award-winning Dallas Buyers Club and his brief and excellent appearance in The Wolf of Wall Street, 2014 will be even better to him with Interstellar under his belt. And let’s not forget his slew of co-stars in Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Topher Grace, John Lithgow, Wes Bentley and many, many more! Interstellar comes out on November 7th, so while you’re waiting patiently, be sure to give that trailer a watch or twenty!

10. Dumb and Dumber To
Picture
Closing out the list (which was actually really difficult; this is going to be a great year!) is a film that, the second it was it was announced, I’ve been following it like a mad man: Dumb and Dumber To. While the general consensus regarding the 2003 prequel wasn’t so great, this time around, everyone who was involved with the original film will be back, and that couldn’t be better news! Dumb and Dumber has a special place in my heart and is probably one of the best comedies I’ve ever seen, and now that everyone is gearing up for the sequel, I simply cannot wait to see what they come up with this time. It will take place twenty years after the events of the original, and it will involve them meeting up with their long lost children. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels’s amazing chemistry can be witnessed on November 14th, and I couldn’t be more pumped. They’re back!

And that concludes my ten most anticipated films of the year, ladies and gentlemen! Of course, there are dozens of other movies coming out this year that will no doubt be awesome, so don’t worry: I didn’t forget about Robocop or Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (cue rimshot!). But enough about me, Muties, what about you? Are you on board with these movies? What other upcoming films tickle your fancy this year? Let us know, and as always, be good to one another!
