Comics Review: "Galaxy Quest" #1

- by Ninja Ross, 21 January 2015

Everyone loved Galaxy Quest. I don’t care who you are, you enjoyed Galaxy Quest. It was a fun film that poked fun at Sci-fi fandom while paying homage to it. It had a fantastic cast, a ridiculous plot and some great set pieces. Also, there’s a comic book.

If, like me, you didn’t know about any comic book sequels, you must be pretty excited right about now. You’re understandably desperate to get to a comic book shop and pick up issue one! Well, hold on there! Let me tell you if it’s worth it!

At the end of the Galaxy Quest movie (BY THE WAY, HERE’S WHERE I SPOIL THE ENDING OF THE MOVIE), Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen) saves everyone aboard the spaceship by activating a secret weapon  known as Omega 13, which turns back time by a few seconds.

Saving people is all well and good, but, on planet Dryth, rebel Drythans are fighting the Technocracy, who currently rule their planet.

While on an important mission, things are turned against the rebels when the Omega 13 is activated. What was originally a successful mission was turned into a complete failure. And failure sucks! The rebels don’t take kindly to that, which means hunting down those responsible.

The aliens, giving some exposition.

Skip ahead, and we’re reintroduced to the cast. This first issue brings in every major character from the movie, even if it doesn’t give them all the attention they deserve. Sam Rockwell’s Guy Fleegman definitely needs more pages, along with Alan Rickman’s Alexander Dane.

Erik Burnham’s script is still well written, despite feeling like he’s trying to rush the set up for future issues. Not a lot really happens in this first issue, but it doesn’t really feel that way. Burnham sticks to the tone of the source material, keeping things liught with plenty of Star Trek references thrown in, as well as a few others. But the more dramatic elements aren’t buried by the humour, so the story does tick along, if at a sometimes disjointed pace.

Do you recognize these guys?

On the slightly more negative side, Nacho Arranz’s art isn’t exactly too close to what we remember from the movie. Tim Allen does not look like that. Tim Allen wishes he looked like that. None of the characters really look like the actors who originally portrayed them, in fact.

That’s not to say Arranz’s art is bad, it’s just... Incorrect.  Everything still looks good, with creatures looking as great as they did in the movie and the action scenes are engaging. Esther Sanz’ colour go a long way to helping the art really shine, too, adding plenty of brightness.

So, this issue kind of is worth getting. It is fun and it is, for the most part, faithful to the movie, but it’s also lacking in solid pacing with art that doesn’t quite match up. So... Do pick it up, just don’t RUN to the shop. Have a bit of a walk. Maybe pick up something to eat on the way? Feed some ducks? Whatever you people do outside.
