Comics Review: "Intersect" #1

- by Ninja Ross, 26 November 2014

You know when someone’s trying to explain something, but they just can’t put it into a coherent sentence? Maybe they’ve been drinking or suffered a head injury. They’ll mention things that may or may not be relevant to the story they’re trying to tell. They laugh at a mumble you couldn’t make sense of. Maybe they’ll break down and weep a little bit. "Intersect" is all of these things, but in a good way. Imagine that drunk/concussed friend of yours is being incredibly interesting and you want to sober them up/take them to the emergency room just so you can hear more and make sense of it.

Issue #1 cover. Click to enlarge.
Intersect kicks off with a woman lying down, touching herself. Not in a fun way, more of a “this is all kind of different to me” kind of way. It turns out, she’s actually two people in one. A woman named Ali and a man named Jason. Together, with another fellow named only “Kid,” they run from an enemy known only as "Lucky".

Ali and Jason don’t really get along, with Jason being a bit of a dick and Ali seemingly just trying to get the three of them to safety.

Things get weird after a few pages. It rains blood, for a start. And also, people merge with grills while speaking backwards. And there’s a weird voice talking about flesh. And a nursery rhyme. And a final ten pages of UTTER CONFUSION.

The last ten pages are ten of the most interesting pages I’ve read in a long time and I have no idea what it means. It’s all in code, which you’re supposed to crack. There’s even an email address for you to submit your answers to.

Strange grills!

Naturally, I gave up within minutes. But these pages are gorgeous, creepy and interesting. You don’t even need to attempt to understand them to enjoy them.

Ray Fawkes, who also supplies the art on the book, has written something that is both confusing and entertaining. There’s enough excellent pacing, plot and character interaction to keep the weirdness from getting stale.

Obraz
Hearing voices.

It’s a fantastic horror book; It’s creepy and atmospheric and it owes that to the art as much as the story.

I haven’t actually seen any of Fawkes’ artwork before, but I hear this is quite a bit different from a lot of his work. It looks incredible, using a lot of bright colours that give everything a kind of an eerie atmosphere when paired with the story.

It’s one of the best comic books I’ve read in a very long time. There’s always the possibility that as more of the story is revealed, the book will lose the pacing and intrigue that makes this first issue so excellent, but that’s a problem for the future! Screw the future! Screw you, future! This book is awesome NOW.

If you haven’t added this book to your pull list, you’re an idiot. Or you haven’t been informed about how great it is. Either way, you should really check it out.

"Intersect" #1 is already out. Did you get it? What did you think? Make sure to let us know in the comments!
