Comics Review: "Anno Dracula" #1

- by Jacurutu99, 22 March 2017

ANNO DRACULA takes place in an offshoot-reality of Bram Stoker's Dracula novel. Here, an unsuccessful defeat of Count Dracula results in him ruling Great Britain for ten years now, resulting in the formerly secret society of vampires now able to emerge, if not into sunlight, into the public arena. The vampires operate on several different levels, including some that oppose Dracula's rule.

"Dracula commands the elements..the creatures of the deep...and the Royal navy.”

Our entry point into this world is Katharine Reed, who serves as Wednesday of the council of Seven Days, an  anarchist faction that meets in the shadows to counter Dracula's rule which has a traitor in it's midst.

Lurking just off-panel are The Grey Men, Dracula’s dreaded secret police,  who have been ordered eliminate all resistance.

With intrigue on all sides, the scene is set for this explosive addition to the Anno Dracula series. The Anno Dracula novel and short story series began by Kim Newman in 1992 and has it's own rich history to draw from, consisting of four books and a number of short stories.

Neil Gaiman played a hand in helping to develop the book series  series and has called Anno Dracula “compulsory reading,” and citing the series as a main source of inspiration for his Hugo award-winning short story, ‘A Study in Emerald’.

With this excellent first issue containing the brilliant artwork of this vivid world by artist Paul McCaffrey and colorist Kevin Enhart, the world of Anno Dracula is wide-open. While I tend to believe the comics series will serve as a "Remix" to the novels and won't be following them directly the possibilities are truly endless. Just a few of the real life and not-so real life characters, vampire and non-vampire alike, who appear in the novel series are Edward VII, Barnabas Collins from TV’s Dark Shadows, Dr. Moreau, Orson Welles, Kurt Barlow from Stephen King’s ‘Salem’s Lot, Dr. Jekyll (and Mr. Hyde), Oscar Wilde, Elizabeth Bathory,Billy the Kid,Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes...

The mind reels as whats to come from Anno Dracula!
