Comics Review: "The Mummy" #1 (Hammer Comics)

- by Jacurutu99, 9 November 2016

„The Mummy” is the new title by veteran comic writer Peter Milligan (known for Justice Leauge Dark, X-Force/X-Statix, Shade the Changing Man, a criminally-underated short run on Animal Man #27-32 and countless others) with terrific art by Ronilson Freire. Mummy issue 1 is the introduction to a new line of comics based on the Hammer horror films which will see brand-new comic stories featuring classic Hammer properties, as well as wholly original Hammer stories, produced by Titan Comics.

With movies such as Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed and Taste the Blood of Dracula, Hammer films became must-viewing for thrill seekers from the 1930's to the ’70s. Shot in Eastmancolor, the first batch of Hammer Horror movies – Terence Fisher's The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Dracula (1958) and The Mummy (1959) – are among the loveliest-looking British films of the decade.

The tone of  The Mummy issue #1 is very reminiscent of the Hammer films, striking a balance between myth and the human world, leaving us to decide which is which.

The central character of this Mummy — and perhaps the title character — is a young woman who’s been chosen by the Sect of Anubis as a human sacrifice. On one night every 30 years the Sect must offer up a human vessel to house the spirit of the priestess Nebetah so that they can kill her and drink her blood, thus granting them immortality. Spoiler, She’s not going willingly…

However much or little the comic ends up having with the original movie, it looks to be an interesting new take on the story in the expert hands of a great writer like Peter Milligan, who ALWAYS has an interesting take.
