TM Movie News: '80s Revival Extravaganza

- by Steve Garcia, 9 February 2014

Happy Monday, my lovely Muties! Star Wars! Rocky! Robotech! X-Men! We’re straight out of the 1980s up in here! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Picture

Astro Boy:

  • Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy will once again be headed to theaters with a live-action reboot. First reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Australia’s Animal Logic Entertainment has teamed up with Japan’s Tezuka Productions to breathe new life into the robotic Astro Boy. This is what producer Zareh Nalbandian had to say about the project as she and executive producers Jason Lust, Mike Callaghan, and Reuben Liber begin the search for a writer:
  • “We’ve seen him as a manga, an anime, and an animated movie, but we’ve never seen him as a live-action movie or him as a superhero. We actually see him in the same league as an Iron Man. We want to make it aspirational but not soft."

Creed:

  • Rocky Balboa will be back on the big screen in time for Thanksgiving, as the upcoming spinoff film Creed is set for a November 25, 2015 release. Reported by Deadline, the film will be starring Michael B. Jordan (Chronicle) as Adonis Creed, grandson of former champion Apollo Creed from the original Rocky. Sylvester Stallone will reprise his role as Rocky Balboa to mentor the up and coming legend. Opening against films such as Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur and the untitled Seth Rogen/Joseph Gordon-Levitt Christmas comedy, Creed is up for one heck of a box-office brawl.

The Lost City of Z:

  • Benedict Cumberbatch has officially departed from the approaching film adaptation of The Lost City of Z, with Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam to take his place, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Attached to the role of real-life explorer Colonel Percy Fawcett since 2013 after Brad Pitt stepped down, the source claims that Cumberbatch left the project to prepare for Marvel Studios’s Doctor Strange.  Hunnam will be joined by Sienna Miller and Robert Pattinson, who will be playing Fawcett’s wife and son, respectively. While no release date has been confirmed, principle photography is scheduled to begin within the next few months.

Robotech:

  • Along with Astro Boy, deadline reported that the 80’s anime series Robotech will finally be getting the live-action treatment over at Warner Bros. After numerous attempts to get this potential franchise off the ground, 300 producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton are on board to produce, with Michael Gordon (300, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) penning the script. Sources claim that Mama director Andy Muschietti is being eyed to direct.

Star Wars Spinoff:

  • Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) is en route to a galaxy far, far away as she is in negotiations to star in the first Star Wars spinoff post-Episode VII! Broken by The Hollywood Reporter, Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul and Zero Dark Thirty star Edgar Ramirez are supposedly on the shortlist of favored male leads. The spinoff will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) and written by Chris Weitz (American Pie). This untitled spinoff is expected to hit theaters on December 16, 2016.

Stargate:

  • The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Roland Emmerich’s Stargate reboot has found its screenwriting team in Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods. As the three of them have been working together on the upcoming  Independence Day sequel, Dean Devlin (writer of the original Stargate) has signed on to produce. Stargate will be headed to a theater near you in 2016.

X-Men: Apocalypse:

  • The ensemble cast of X-Men: Apocalypse continues to grow as mutant veteran Rose Byrne will be reprising her role as Moira MacTaggert. Previously in X-Men: First Class, MacTaggert was a CIA agent who established a romantic relationship with Charles Xavier (played by James McAvoy). Her role in the sequel will be much important, according to screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg. Alongside Byrne and McAvoy will be a plethora of recurring and new faces to the X-Men franchise, such as Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Sophie Turner, and Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse. X-Men: Apocalypse is slated for a May 27, 2016 release.
  • In other X-news, Kinberg also teased a possible crossover between the longtime X-Men franchise and the forthcoming Fantastic Four reboot. Here’s what the screenwriter of both films had to say on the subject:
  • “The reboot of FanFour really needed to work in and of itself. We were doing something pretty radical with the tone of the movie. If we wanted to find a way to connect them to the X-Men, we could. There's a lot of precedent from the comics."
  • Fantastic Four will be released on August 7, 2015, with a sequel fast tracked for July 14, 2017.
