TM Movie News: Annabelle, Batman v Superman & Car Chases

- by Steve Garcia, 11 August 2014

Happy Monday, my lovely Muties! Who’s Zack Snyder’s new favorite superhero? Which SNL sketch is getting the movie treatment? Are vampire film franchises truly immortal?! So many questions, but I’ve got the answers, ladies and gents! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Picture

Assassin’s Creed:

  • Michael Fassbender speaks! The Assassin’s Creed movie is on its way for that August 7, 2015 release, and we’ve finally got a little insight on what to expect. Afraid that this movie will fall under the dreaded video game movie curse? Check out Fassbender’s calming words:
  • "You know, we absolutely want to respect the game. There's so much cool stuff in the game that we're actually spoiled for choice in terms of what we can use and what we can't, but we also want to bring new elements to it and perhaps our own version of things that already exist in the game. But we're definitely making a feature film, and we're approaching it as a feature film, as opposed to approaching it as a video game. But I love the world. I don't really play that many video games, but when I met up with the guys from Ubisoft and they started to explain this whole world and the idea of DNA memory - you know, I think it's a very feasible scientific theory. I just thought, 'This is so rich,' and about the possibility of it being this cinematic experience. So I'm really excited about it, and we're working very hard to make sure that we've got the best and most exciting, original package."

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice:

  • Did Zack Snyder just confirm Aquaman? As we all know, the film is currently in production in Detroit, and after a local radio station was badmouthing the Atlantian superhero, director Zack Snyder actually called in to speak on the character’s behalf! Check out his stance on the subject:
  • "I don't want to give anything away about the movie or anything like that, but Aquaman has some cool abilities. People are like, 'Oh what? Does he talk to animals? Because that seems like what he does. Or fish?' The cool thing with Aquaman is he has his trident. You have to realize that could cut the flesh of Superman if they came in contact. That's a thing that's in the canon. He's super strong because, of course, he can exist at these super deep depths. So when he comes up here, he's crazy strong. Anyway, not to say he's in my movie or anything like that, but he has the potential to be bad ass, that's all I’m saying."
  • In other DC Cinematic Universe news, it looks like WB lost the staring contest against Marvel Studios, as Batman v Superman shifted its release date two months ahead of its original date, which just happened to be inhabited by Captain America 3. Here’s WB President Dan Fellmen had to say about the change:
  • "The reality now is there really isn't a bad week to open a movie. If you look at the summer box office this year, you can see that there were so many movies, one after the other. You can start with Spider-Man, two weeks later Godzilla, and then Maleficent, and then Edge of Tomorrow, and then Jump Street and Transformers. And the one thing they all had in common, not one of them did over $250 million. We'll be the first one up [in 2016], which is very important, and we'll have six weeks before Captain America comes in."
  • In addition to the date change, WB also revealed nine other release dates that star DC Comics properties, as well as two “event films”:
  • Untitled DC Film – August 5, 2016
  • Untitled DC Film – June 23, 2017
  • Untitled DC Film – November 17, 2017
  • Untitled DC Film – March 23, 2018
  • Untitled DC Film – July 27, 2018
  • Untitled WB Event Film – November 16, 2018
  • Untitled DC Film – April 5, 2019
  • Untitled DC Film – June 14, 2019
  • Untitled DC Film – April 3, 2020
  • Untitled DC Film – June 19, 2020
  • Untitled WB Event Film – November 20, 2020

The Lonely Island:

  • Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer are Saturday Night Live’s musical group The Lonely Island, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, they’re on the way to the big screen for their own feature film! Known for such hits as Dick in a Box, Motherlover, I’m on a Boat, and I Just Had Sex, the movie will be “set in the music world,” and be directed by Taccone and Schaffer. Judd Apatow (Superbad, Knocked Up) will be producing along with the musical trio for Universal Pictures.

Marvel Cinematic Universe:

  • When can we expect more Thanos? In a recent interview with IGN, Josh Brolin hinted that not only will be seeing the Mad Titan soon, but multiple times before the giant-sized Avengers 3! Check out his word on that, as well as Brolin’s insight on Thanos’s disturbing relationship with Death:
  • "His relationship with Death, who is actually the woman, I love that. You can take Sin City and pump it full of steroids, and then you have Thanos. I like that he's motivated by that -- not just motivated by destruction or death or this or that. He's motivated by a very identifiable, human trait."
  • ”When I first said yes, they sent me so much frickin' research. I was in the middle of doing Everest, and I was focusing more on Thanos than I was on Everest. I know what one appearance is going to be for sure. There's one or two that I don't know."

Seth Rogen’s Christmas Eve Movie:

  • Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are teaming up once again in an upcoming and untitled Christmas Eve movie! Directing this sure to be hit will be none other than 50/50’s Jonathan Levine, and the star-studded cast also includes Anthony Mackie (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Lizzy Caplan (Party Down) as Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s love interest. The film begins production this week, and it’s slated for a December 11, 2015 release.

The Vampire Chronicles:

  • Just when you thought the vampire craze was over, think again, ladies and germs! The rights to Anne Rice’s “The Vampire Chronicles” series were just obtained by Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment, which means that a new film franchise is imminent. The first of the series, Interview With the Vampire (which already had its own film in 1994 starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise) is the most likely to be announced for a remake, following the sequel Queen of the Damned (which, yes, already had an adaptation in 2002 starring Aaliyah and Stuart Townsend). Stay tuned for more updates as they come!

How do you feel about Assassin’s Creed? Are you pumped for more Thanos? Let us know in the comments below, folks! As always, have an excellent week ahead and be good to one another!
