TM Movie News: Back to the Future, Jaws, FANTASTICAR!

- by Steve Garcia, 7 September 2015

Happy Monday, my lovely Muties! Back to the Future! Jaws! Jurassic World! Nicktoons! WHAT YEAR IS IT?! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Back to the Future/Jaws Reboot:

  • Earlier this week, it was broken by The Hollywood Reporter that legendary director Stephen Spielberg’s DreamWorks is going to break away with Disney, and is looking to go to Universal. That’s all well and good, but one little passage stuck out from the exclusive…
  • “Sources say Spielberg commanded his rich director’s fee for Jurassic World — a percentage of profit worth tens of millions of dollars — from which he then paid helmer Colin Trevorrow. He also is key on potential reboots of other Universal franchises such as Jaws and Back to the Future.”
  • What?! How was that not a main bullet point?! Back to the Future and Jaws are the most defining films of their era, and touching them in any way, shape, or form is a huge deal. Jaws in particular is also notorious for being Spielberg’s baby, so it’s baffling to me that he would want to go back to it. That being said, he’s Stephen Spielberg. He can do what he wants. Let’s wait and see how this turns out.

Jurassic World:

  • Speaking of Jurassic World, in a turnout that absolutely nobody saw coming (and you’re a liar if you said otherwise), it has become the fourth film in history to cross $1 billion in strictly overseas gross. To put that in perspective, its competition is Avatar ($2.027 billion), Titanic ($1.528 billion), and Universal’s other colossal 2015 hit Furious 7, which has grossed $1.162 billion since its release in April. And the most astounding thing about this story is that 2015 isn’t even over yet—Star Wars is on the horizon, and it’s going to be a monster. But in the meantime, people love their dinosaurs! A sequel is of course in production, and is slated for a June 22, 2018 release.

Marvel Cinematic Universe:

  • Captain America is here to stay! In a recent interview with Collider, the Star Spangled Man with a Plan Chris Evans made it clear that he’s not giving up the shield anytime soon:
  • “Listen, if Marvel wants me they got me. I’ve never had such a relationship where you have such—I mean look at my resume, I’m used to being on set being like, ‘Ah is this movie gonna be terrible?’ Marvel just can’t stop making great movies, they do it in their sleep. It’s wonderful directors and producers and actors and scripts, and it’s like a playground as an actor.”
  • But didn’t he say a few months ago that he was thinking about quitting acting altogether?
  • “It’s so mind-boggling that I was so tentative in the beginning to jump onboard. What an asshole I would be if I hadn’t done this. I mean can you imagine? Kicking myself—I’d never forgive myself!”
  • Fair enough! I love this dude as Steve Rogers, so if he’s happy where he’s at, so am I!

Nicktoons:

  • Early this week, it was said that Nickelodeon was looking to reboot some of their beloved 90’s cartoons, which included (but wasn’t limited to) Doug, Rugrats, and Hey Arnold! That’s a fantastic idea that I’m in full support of, but what does that have to do with movies? Well, shortly after that little announcement, a site called The Tracking Board claims that not only is this happening, but Nickelodeon is also bringing these characters and more to the big screen in a live-action/animated hybrid film called Nicktoons that will cross over all of the aforementioned cartoons, plus the Angry Beavers, Rocko’s Modern Life, and Ren and Stimpy among others. While the 90’s baby in me is crying happy tears of nostalgia at the very thought of this film, it should be noted that this is only a rumor right now, and it should be taken with a gigantic grain of salt. Either way, Ren and Stimpy’s triumphant return to any screen period is one that I’ve always been ready for, so you better believe that I’ll be following this story as it develops!

STUFF YOU SHOULD LOOK AT:

Fantastic Four:

  • Oh, Fant4stic. That dumb disappointment almost had a bunch of cool things in it, including HERBIE AND THE FREAKIN’ FANTASTICAR! LOOK AT THEM!

And there you have it! Are you surprised that Jurassic World is still tearing up the box office? Disappointed that the Fantasticar was left in the junkyard? Would you like to see a return of the Nicktoons? Let us know! As always, be good to one another!
