TM Movie News: Banepocalypse, Civil War & DC Movie Bonanza

- by Steve Garcia, 20 October 2014

Happy Monday, my lovely Muties! Superheroes, robots, mangas, and more superheroes! Warner Brothers has officially become a freight train of comic book properties! Marvel is proposing a Civil War! The X-Men’s Apocalypse is among us! They’re making a third Pacific Rim? BUT THE SEQUEL ISN’T EVEN OUT YET! An explosion of emotions this week, ladies and germs! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Picture

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice:

  • The Almighty BatFleck might have his Robin! A few months ago, actress Jena Malone (The Hunger Games, Sucker Punch) was spotted on the set of the highly anticipated superhero beat-down, but told the presses that she was merely visiting as she has worked with director Zack Snyder in the past. The Hollywood Reporter, however, claimed that she will indeed be in the film, and the entirety of the internet is convinced that she will play Carrie Kelly, the female Robin featured in Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns.” Snyder has repeatedly expressed that this film is heavily based on the game-changing graphic novel, so the arguments are certainly not too farfetched. Being that Kelly was a thirteen year-old girl in the comics, however, it’s completely plausible that she could be playing an entirely different character altogether. Stay tuned!

Captain America 3:

  • In an internet post heard around the world, Variety dropped the bomb that Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to play a significant role in Captain America 3, which follows the events of next summer’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. While nothing has been confirmed by Marvel Studios or Disney, the word is that this film will plant the seeds for a “Civil War” adaptation. “Civil War” was a 2006 Marvel event in which a catastrophic explosion set by a super villain causes the government to push the Superhuman Registration Act. This bill would force all superhumans (heroes and villains alike) to turn their secret identities in and work closely alongside the government. It results in a bloody war between the Marvel superheroes, with Captain America leading the charge on one end, and Iron Man on the other.

DC Cinematic Universe:

  • Hold the presses, ladies and gentlemen! Warner Bros. has officially announced their entire slate of upcoming DC Comics films from now up until 2020. They even included the confirmation of more solo Superman and Batman movies and a Green Lantern reboot! Check out the excerpt from the official press release:
  • “…In a massive expansion of the Studio’s DC Entertainment-branded content, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema will release a slate of at least 10 movies–as well as stand-alone Batman and Superman films–from 2016 through 2020 that expands this prized universe of characters:
  • Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice directed by Zack Snyder (2016)
  • Suicide Squad directed by David Ayer (2016)
  • Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot (2017)
  • Justice League Part One directed by Zack Snyder, with Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Amy Adams reprising their roles (2017)
  • The Flash starring Ezra Miller (2018)
  • Aquaman starring Jason Momoa (2018)
  • Shazam starring Dwayne Johnson (2019)
  • Justice League Part Two directed by Zack Snyder (2019)
  • Cyborg starring Ray Fisher (2020)
  • Green Lantern (2020)”

Ghost in the Shell:

  • The famous manga’s soon-to-be film adaptation may have found its lead! Deadline claims that Scarlet Johansson is in negotiations to star for $10 million, following several scattered year-old rumors that the role would belong to Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street). Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) is attached to direct, with the script written by William Wheeler (The Hoax).

Halloween 3:

  • The return of Rob Zombie’s Halloween franchise is on the road to a slow comeback! Producer Malek Akkad gave fans a hopeful update on current plans for a sequel:
  • "It's been a joy to work with so many creative people - ten films. We're working on eleven as we speak. We're working on a script right now. A new draft - perfect timing - is supposed to hit the day before Halloween. Hopefully my Halloween night reading will be a good read."

Pacific Rim 3:

  • You read that right! Guillermo del Toro fully intends to make Pacific Rim a trilogy while the second one hasn’t even started filming yet! Check out his word on the subject:
  • The direction we're going in is very different from the first. All I can say is some of your favorite characters come back, some others don't because we have decided that we're going to shoot ambitiously and say 'Let's hope we have three movies,‘ so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one. I hope people like it but you're gonna get a very different experience from the first one."

Suicide Squad:

  • Almost immediately after WB unveiled their massive DC Comics movie lineup, The Hollywood Reporter reported that several A-list actors are in talks to star in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. Among the approached are Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and Will Smith. With a reported August 2016 release, a renowned filmmaker behind the wheel, and top-notch Academy Award-level talent, things have never looked brighter for fans of the rag-tag comic book team.

X-Men: Apocalypse:

  • Will Tom Hardy bring on the Apocalypse? According to TheWrap, the world’s most popular actor is being eyed by Fox to play the title villain in Bryan Singer’s upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. From portraying Bane in The Dark Knight Rises to being eyed for not only X-Men, but WB’s Suicide Squad adaptation, Hardy is the actor to keep all eyes on. X-Men: Apocalypse is slated for May 27, 2016, and will feature Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, and Channing Tatum as Gambit.
