TM Movie News: "BatFleck", Thor 2 photos & a little more!

- by Steve Garcia, 26 August 2013

What’s going on Trash Muties? It’s been a very slow week for news because of a certain Caped Crusader casting announcement, but the show must go on! Batman! Ben Affleck! BatFleck! And a teeny-tiny bit more! Micro-Sized movie news coming atcha!

Avengers: Age of Ultron:

  • Avengers head honcho Joss Whedon was always into the idea of bringing Ultron into the movies. Of course, with the drastic change of giving the character a new Pym-less origin, Whedon is also seeking out to lessen his power set in the upcoming superhero sequel. Here’s what he had to say about that: “I knew right away what I wanted to do with him. He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it, he’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we’ll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone [a new character, Scarlet Witch] who’s a witch.” And speaking of that witch, it appears that the seemingly forgotten and completely normal Olsen sister, Elizabeth Olsen (who will be in the upcoming Godzilla film), is reportedly in final negotiations to play the Scarlet Witch. I dig the casting choice, and I’m intrigued as to what Whedon’s got planned for Ultron. Good stuff.

Fifty Shades of Grey:

  • Looks like this week was entirely devoted to casting decisions, because apparently Dakota Johnson (The Social Network, 21 Jump Street) and Charles Hunnam (Pacific Rim, Sons of Anarchy) are both in talks of portraying the lead roles in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation. Rejoice. Don’t. Doesn’t matter to me—I’ll be far away from this one, thanks.

Guardians of the Galaxy:

  • According to various sources, it appears that Academy Award-nominated Bradley Cooper is in talks to lend his voice to Rocket Raccoon in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film. Cooper is no stranger to the snarky-type character because of The Hangover franchise, so there’s not a doubt in my mind that he’ll be great. That being said, however, I’ve always imagined Rocket with a cockney accent. Ah well.

Man of Steel 2:

  • Alright, so it’s not exactly news to anyone reading this today that Ben Affleck has been cast as Batman in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel, but hey, it’s my duty to report and commentate. He’s been reportedly signed up for multiple films, and has already begun training for the role. A majority of the Internet seems to think that this is the worst thing in the history of bad things to ever happen… But you know what? I like it. While I personally would have gone with Josh Brolin (who was apparently considered), I feel like Ben will do a great job. Naysayers who continue to bring up Gigli, Reindeer Games, and Daredevil need to step back and remember that both Gigli and Reindeer Games were when the guy was still young-- it's 2013 for Internet’s sake, and he's won multiple academy awards since then. As for Daredevil, Affleck wasn't the problem—far from it actually. The problems that resided in that film, in my opinion, were some of that dialogue (the playground scene especially) and Jennifer Garner's Elektra. Furthermore, The Town and Argo were fantastic films, and Affleck, as an actor, gave great performances in both. And for those worried about his physique, remember that the dude is 6'3" and he was ripped in The Town. Now, what fans should be worried about is the material he will be given. While I found Man of Steel to be just "ok," I personally don't exactly have high hopes for the sequel because it seems to me that Snyder and Goyer are only interested in a 2.5 hour fight scene; which isn’t the way to go. But Affleck will be fine. It's not the end of the world.

Soon after the casting announcement, a bunch of rumors have been circulating, including that Matt Damon is being offered a role, Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) is locked in for the role of Lex Luthor, and Mark Strong will reprise his role as Sinestro for future DC/WB films. Take them all with a grain of salt, because the Internet has been on fire for the past few days.

UPDATE: Apparently Ben Affleck is also co-writing the script. We can sleep easy!

Pirates of the Caribbean 5:

  • The next installment of the Pirates franchise will be called Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. That’s all. Moving on.

And that’ll do it for this week, my righteous readers! What’s your take on this Ultron business? Are you ok with the Scarlet Witch and Rocket Raccoon casting choices? Do you care about "Fifty Shades of Grey"? And of course, what’s your opinion on BatFleck? As always, it’s been a pleasure. Be good to one another!
