TM Movie News: Black Panther, Blue Foxx & Heroes Galore

- by Steve Garcia, 22 April 2013

Superman! Black Panther! Captain Planet! Boba Fett! And the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! This week’s Movie News or the best super-group ever? You decide!

Picture

21 Jump Street 2:

Sony confirmed that a sequel to the successful hit comedy, 21 Jump Street, will be in a theater near you in 2014. Both Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill will of course be returning to reprise their comedic duo.

  • Steve Says: A great surprise! Seriously, if you haven’t seen the first one, do it right now! Really funny stuff, and Hill and Tatum have an awesome chemistry together. Definitely looking forward to this one and you should too!

The Amazing Spider-Man 2:

An early on-set picture revealed what the villainous Electro will look like in the 2012 sequel. Electro will be portrayed by Jamie Foxx.

  • Steve Says: Huh. It’s an early image, so it will no doubt look better once the CG team gets in there and make him really pop. As of right now, I can’t say that I’m into it much, but the internet seems to really like his new look. I can’t help but think that he looks astonishingly like Don Cheadle’s Captain Planet… What?! You don’t know about that! Stay tuned for the STUFF YOU SHOULD LOOK AT!

Black Panther:

The longtime-speculated Black Panther film based on the Marvel superhero may be closer to us now than ever. Kick-Ass 2 star Morris Chestnut revealed in a tweet last week that he should “get familiar with the Black Panther character!” He followed that tweet with a picture of the character, but quickly deleted both of them soon after. Even still, Chestnut then tweeted that it is “Not final. #BlackPanther may be in #avengers2 first.” Will Black Pather be a part of Avengers 2 and Marvel/Disney’s Phase 3?

  • Steve Says: What?! This is awesome! It’s about time, too, because this character’s movie has been in development almost as long as Ant-Man has. Almost. Anyway, this is great, Chestnut looks the part, Panther’s involvement in Avengers 2 sounds incredibly interesting, and we’re all excited about it! If you disagree, we can’t be friends!

Fast and Furious 7:

The Fast and Furious has been green-lit for yet another sequel slated for July 11, 2014, announced at CinemaCon by actor Vin Diesel himself.

  • Steve Says: Admittedly, I’ve never seen any of the Fast and Furious movies, but I’ve heard excellent things about the last one. The sixth film will be out this summer, and I can only imagine how awesome this is for fans of the franchise. There ya go, guys! Party on.

Guardians of the Galaxy:

Walking Dead actor Michael Rooker has signed on to play the part of Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by James Gunn. This film will be in a theater near you on August 1, 2014.

  • Steve Says: And here everyone thought that he’d be voicing Rocket Raccoon. Truth told, I’ve never heard of the character, but from what I understand, he played a big part in the team’s original run. Rooker’s a talented actor; Merle from The Walking Dead is one of the few characters on the Walking Dead that I actually like. Good stuff!

Dr. Strange:

According to “reliable sources,” the recently announced Dr. Strange film may have found its star. Marvel Studios has apparently been eyeballing actor Justin Theroux (Wanderlust) to portray the Sorcerer Supreme.

  • Steve Says: Ehhhhh, I’d take this one with a grain of salt. But if this is who they want, I’d like to know why. Strange isn’t exactly a well-known character by any stretch, so I would think they’d want a big name actor in the role. No disrespect to Theroux, of course, I just find it odd. Either way, the movie’s still being made, so yay!

Iron Man 3:

Will Ant-Man be in Iron Man 3? According to several comments made by director Edgar Write, he may or may not have filmed a scene or two in the upcoming hit. In other, unfortunate news, Robert Downey Jr. hinted that he may retire from the role of the genius, billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist because of his age and busy schedule. On a happier note, Iron Man 3 director Shane Black is confident that Downey will be back again for Iron Man 4. Iron Man 3 will be in theaters everywhere on May 3.

  • Steve Says: Ant-Man first. YES! I won’t doubt it, because the terrorist organization AIM will apparently be playing a big part in both films. I think we all know by now too, to never leave a Marvel movie without looking at those sexy after-credit scenes. On RDJ, I sincerely doubt that he’ll be done before Iron Man 4. Yes, eventually he will step down, and yes, he will be replaced by another actor eventually, but given the cold-hard cash he earned for Iron Man 3 and The Avengers, I really don’t think he’s going anywhere yet. We’ll see. Stay confident, guys. I trust Shane Black, and you should too!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:

Despite Michael Bay’s comments about the turtle’s “new” origins, Paramount revealed that the upcoming film will be officially titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at CinemaCon. In other recent news, Danny Woodburn (Seinfeld, Mirror Mirror) will be portraying the role of Splinter in the 2014 release.

  • Steve Says: Well… I was not expecting Splinter to be played by Mickey from Seinfeld, but… There ya go?

The Shining (Prequel):

The announced Shining prequel is officially titled as The Overlook Hotel, and Walking Dead writer Glen Mazzara will be working on the first screenplay.

  • Steve Says: Do we need this? I mean, whether or not, we’re getting it, but is anyone really asking for this? Anyway, chin up. The Shining is an awesome movie, so we’ll see how this turns out.

Star Wars:

New movies in the summers of 2015, 2017, and 2019 according to studio chief Alan Horn. At CinemaCon, he also stated that Disney and Lucas Films are also working on other standalone Star Wars films that will not be actual “episodes” in the main saga.

  • Steve Says: BOBA FETT MOVIE IS CLOSER THAN EVER. JUST ANNOUNCE IT ALREADY, DISNEY! And there can’t be too many Star Wars films, in my opinion. It’s a big galaxy with hundreds of stories that can be told. Be excited!

STUFF YOU SHOULD LOOK AT:

ABC Family Presents: Batman Begins:

In a prime example of missing the point, look at the ridiculousness of how ABC Family presents Batman Begins!

Don Cheadle is... Captain Planet!:

Old, but good, look at what that Electro picture reminded me of!

The Hangover Part III:

New trailer revealing plot details! Look at it!

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire:

Look at this really long teaser trailer for the next Hunger Games movie! CATCHING FIRE!

Elysium:

Matt Damon in space! The closest thing we got to a Halo movie, apparently! Look at it!

Man of Steel:

There are few movies that have ever made me cry. I’m not shy to admit that 50/50 makes me breakdown every time, but that’s beside the point. This is the first time a trailer’s ever made me tear up. Ladies and gentlemen, if you already haven’t, look at the trailer I’ve been playing non-stop for four days straight. MAN OF STEEL! SUPERMAN!

And if that wasn’t enough, someone recreated the trailer with edited clips from the animated series. Look at this, too!

Star Trek Into Darkness:

New trailer! Be pumped and look at it in all its glory!

R.I.P.D.:

Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds in the same movie about cops? What?! Look at it!

The Way Way Back:

This one gave me goose bumps. Steve Carrel playing a legitimate jerk is something we just haven’t seen before, Sam Rockwell is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors in this generation, and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if this movie will be winning some awards. Look at it!

And that’s all I wrote! How sexy and tear-inducing was that Man of Steel trailer? What do you think about Electro’s new look? Would you watch a Black Panther movie? What about Dr. Strange and those Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Also, which Star Wars standalone movies do you want to see?! Have an excellent week and be good to one another!
