TM Movie News: Days of Future Past, Star Trek, Kevin Smith

- by The Rajun Cajun, 11 December 2012

Trash Mutant! Are you ready to rock?! No? Fine, let’s talk about movies then. Lots of stuff to tell you about this week, so let’s get to it, shall we?

Picture

  • Comic book movies first! X-Men: Days of Future Past casting news. Now that this is 100% confirmed, I’m incredibly excited to inform you guys that Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen, Professor X and Magneto themselves, are signed on to continue their respective roles in the X-Men sequel. Hell yeah! They were fantastic in the previous X-Men films, and the fact that they’ll be returning is more than I, or anyone who’s a fan, can ask for. Also, Hugh Jackman will return once again as Wolverine, which is unsurprising, considering his twelve-second, unforgettable, and hilarious cameo in X-Men: First Class. In the story this movie is based on, Logan plays a huge part, and perhaps he will in the film as well. And if that wasn’t enough, apparently Fox is looking for the old stars of the original X-Men movies like James Marsden’s Cyclops and Halle Berry’s Storm to return as well. Apparently these latest additions to the film will reprise their roles only to cameo in the film, but still, they’re in it and that’s awesome.

  • While we’re still talking Fox superheroes, they’ve announced that the Fantastic Four reboot will be in a theater near you in 2015. That means that Avengers 2, Ant-Man, Justice League, Star Wars, and now the FF, will all be in the same year. 2015 is the year of the nerdgasm, and it’s fantastic (pun intended).

  • In Sony superhero news, let’s talk about The Amazing Spider-Man sequel. Mark Webb confirmed via Twitter that Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) is going to be Harry Osborn. Personally, I think he’s great, but I’m not sure if he’s …I don’t know the right word… pretty-boy enough? I don’t know, it’s just an odd way to go considering how young he looks. In any event, I have faith in Mr. Webb, so that’s all that matters to this writer. Now that Mary Jane Watson, Harry Osborn, and Jamie Foxx’s Electro are all confirmed and ready to go, it looks like we’ve got our movie! Looking forward to it, guys!

  • In other Spider-Man news, let’s discuss some film right issues with this character’s franchise. Recall in an earlier article of mine that stated that since Spider-Man’s a Sony property, it’s very unlikely that he’ll be anywhere near the Avengers franchise. After watching some TV this weekend, I stumbled upon a commercial that caught my attention and got me thinking about this. It’s a Target commercial (Target’s a department store in the States, for some of our foreign readers) where both Iron Man and Spider-Man team up to wrap presents. Might be nothing, but… a Marvel/Disney character on the same screen as a Sony character? And it’s a legitimate appearance on both their parts? After doing some research, I found that in the Marvel short, Item 47, one of the people in there is wearing an Empire State University shirt… the same college that Peter Parker attended in the comics… Could this mean that Spider-Man truly is an unofficial part of the MCU? I can only assume here, as nothing’s been set in stone, but just the thought makes me giddier than a schoolgirl at a Justin Beiber concert. Maybe I’m being too hopeful… I’ll be sure to keep you posted, anyway. Here’s that commercial, though:

  • In a beautiful segway on my part, let’s talk about that Iron Man 3 movie. Avi Arad, a guy who’s been extremely important to all Marvel movies since Raimi’s Spider-Man, says that Iron Man 3 is not as dark and gritty as people are making this out to be. What? No! This was supposed to be Iron Man’s Dark Knight Rises! Why would you say that?! What are you doing Avi?! Stahp! It should also be noted that the Avengers will not be in this movie, and Samuel L Jackson even went on record and said that he’s not going to be in a Marvel movie until Captain America: Winter Solder in 2014. The Avengers are still acknowledged in the movie, as we’ve seen in the trailer, so that’s cool, but don’t kill the hype, Mr. Arad!

  • From Avengers to Justice League, let’s talk about Batman. Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s people are saying that nothing’s official, and that there aren’t any plans for him to be Batman in the upcoming film. Good! Nolan’s Batman movies aren’t for the Justice League, and they shouldn’t ever be. And even if they’re not connecting the franchises, and he does decide to be a part of the League, would he even be Bruce Wayne? Because he’s just not that guy... Well, I could be wrong, because Heath Ledger is proof that anyone’s capable of pulling a hell of a performance, despite their previous work. Personally, I think this story is just BS and this is just a publicity thing, but that’s just me.

  • In other Justice League rumors, we also have an unofficial villain for the movie, and it’s… not surprising at all. It’s Darkseid. The main villain from the New 52’s Justice League reboot, and longtime enemy of Superman and such. Is anyone shocked at all? Because that’d shock me, if anyone’s shocked. The nitpicky nerd in me is worried that, if this is for real, he’ll be in the same summer as Thanos-- a character that’s basically the same guy. Not only that, but he’s the biggest baddie in the DC Universe. Why would they start with him? You’re making me worried, WB. Me no likey. Marvel took/is taking ten movies to introduce their big bad guy. Things will get pretty ironic when the public is made aware of this, because in the comics, Thanos was actually heavily based on Darkseid, and the movie fans will think it’s the other way around. The odds are, once again, not in WB’s favor.

  • In some happier news, let’s talk Superman! The new poster for Man of Steel features Supes chained up, while being escorted by police. Very Grant Morrison Action Comics stuff, for people who haven’t been paying attention to the New 52 comics. Personally, I don’t think this is an ideal image for a poster, but I think it’s cool anyway. I’m incredibly biased though, because I’m a huge Superman fanboy through and through. And some of the really nitpicky people are actually saying stuff like “Superman could just break those chains!” Idiots. That’s not the point. If Superman’s chained up, it’s because he wants to be. He’s trying to prove that the justice system works. If you don’t get that, you don’t get the character’s morals and… Why am I even defending this? Shut up, trolls. Look at the poster, though!

  • In non-comic book movie news, let’s talk about Star Wars. First, is that it’s very likely that Mathew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class) might direct Episode VII. Actor Jason Flemyng was being interviewed, and when the interviewer mentioned how Vaughn felt about Star Wars, he slipped, and said something about Vaughn giving him a small part. Well then. Now it’s out there. Makes sense to me. Why would you leave directing X-Men for what Hollywood said was a smaller Mark Millar project? Disney’s hiding stuff. In related news, remember last week when I mentioned that Lawrence Kasdan and the other guy might be writing Episodes VIII and IX? As it turns out, they may not be doing that after all, but rather some spin-off movies in the Star Wars universe. Boba Fett?! Please! I don’t know, but at least they’re still doing something, and that’s pretty cool.

  • From Star Wars to Star Trek. The teaser poster, as well as the trailer debuted, and they’re awesome. Pretty damn awesome.

  • Anyone familiar with Ender’s Game? That book your high school teacher made you read during the summer (for me, anyway)? Well apparently the movie’s been shot and made, and a still was released of Harrison Ford in the film. Basically, for those of you who aren’t familiar with it, the best way I can describe it based on what I remember is that it’s The Hunger Games in space. …God, the fans will probably kill me for that comparison. I read it seven years ago, guys! Anyway, I remember that in the book, there was also a lot of nudity… and the main character (as well as most of the supporting cast) is supposed to be around twelve years-old. That probably won’t fly in the movie, but it’s still worth mentioning, I reckon. Anyway, cool stuff for you to look at:

  • Ghostbusters 3… Why do I even bother talking about this anymore? Would anyone care if I stop reporting about it? Let me know in the comments section. Anyway, Dan Aykroyd in an interview said that he’s really excited about making this garbage movie, but if Sony’s not going to do it within three months, he’s out. Dear Sony… DON’T DO IT! DON’T GIVE IN TO THAT SELL-OUT’S SHENANNIGANS! The original story, which was changed, had Bill Murray in it as an actual ghost, and it was a phenomenal idea. The minute that Murray was not involved, however, made it go to hell. To continue on his interview, Aykroyd goes onto say some stuff about potential sequels. Sequels?! No! Not without Murray. To sum up how I feel, Aykroyd’s an old man and a fool, and Sony better not give in.

  • Let’s talk about Pacific Rim; Guillermo Del Toro’s big robot vs. monsters blockbuster. It’s gonna be fun, mindless, and awesome. Viral footage was released and it looked very much like Cloverfield. It doesn’t show much, but it does give us a tiny glimpse of the monsters in the movie. Very cool concept art was also released of the robots. This movie’s gonna kick so much ass, and you should definitely watch it.

  • Finally, let’s talk about my man, Kevin Smith. The man behind classic films like: Chasing Amy, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and, most importantly, Clerks. He’s had a lot on his plate in the past few years. Between the release of his latest film Red State, the countless podcasts and touring, and the fact that he’s writing his next project Hit Somebody, is much more tiring than any normal man can endure. Now, he’s announced that Hit Somebody, which was supposed to be split into two films, is going to be split yet again, but into a six-part mini-series on a TV network he has yet to reveal. My bet is AMC, but that’s not the highlight of this story, believe it or not. No, the highlight of this story is that Clerks, his baby and the film that got him to where he is today, will be getting another sequel, and will possibly mark the end of his directing career. Not much about his plan for the film is known, but here’s what I do know after creeping on his Twitter account:
  • Clerks III will be in black and white, which stays true to the original indie movie. The film is not going happen unless everyone is involved. Jeff Anderson, the man who plays one of the main characters, Randal, is apparently being hesitant about returning because of some issues with the Weinstein brothers, the guys who were partially responsible for Clerks and Clerks II, that I won’t get into. But he was also reluctant on returning to Clerks II, for reasons regarding the original Clerks’s stance on it being a classic. Maybe Kev will convince him to come back anyway for his final crusade in directing film, though. I sure hope so. His movies mean the world to me, considering that the Quick Stop is literally ten minutes away from my house.

And that’s that! Let’s hear what you have to say, TMers. Which comic book movie news has you the most pumped? Would you be cool with Spider-Man being a part of the Avengers franchise? Would you want Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Batman, and do you dig Darkseid for the League’s villain? What about those sexy posters and the terrible Ghostbusters news? Finally, what about Clerks III? Are you excited about that? Let’s get some feedback here! Anyways, that’s all I got this week. See ya ‘round, guys. RC out.
