TM Movie News: Deadpool, Suicide Squad, Popeye & more!

- by Steve Garcia, 22 September 2014

Happy Monday, my lovely Muties! Deadpool and the Suicide Squad? Martians and zombies? The Batmobile and James Franco? Do I need to say more?! Sit back and relax, ladies and germs! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Picture

Deadpool:

  • Following the leaked footage of the cancelled Deadpool movie a few months ago, 20th Century Fox has announced that the film isn’t only back on track, but to expect it in theaters on February 12, 2016! Ryan Reynolds is expected to star as the Merc with the Mouth once again, Tim Miller is set to direct, and it will apparently feature the script written by Zombieland writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese all those years ago. According to an “inside scoop” from the “Meet the Movie Press” podcast, the film was green-lit with the condition that it will have to be rated PG-13, as opposed to the hard-R that a majority of die-hard fans (and scriptwriters, apparently) hoped for. Here’s the quote:
  • "I heard from the director that they finally figured out the script, and it was right before this was announced, that they figured out, and you guys are all gonna hate this, they figured out how to make it PG-13. And therefore "not lose its soul", and that' a quote, of the script so that they can make it."

The Martian:

  • Ridley Scott’s upcoming film, The Martian, continues to get closer as House of Cards actress Kate Mara is reportedly in negotiations to star alongside Matt Damon, according to Deadline. Based on Andy Weir’s 2012 e-book publication, here is the synopsis, courtesy of ComingSoon.net:
  • “Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.
Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?”

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension:

  • Unfortunately we’re just going to have to wait a little while longer, as the next installment of the Paranormal Activity franchise moved from its planned October 24, 2014 release date to March 13, 2015. The Ghost Dimension is set to explore an entirely new family this time around, but continues to follow in the trend of a haunted house terrorizing two little girls. Katie Featherston is expected to return as her original character Katie, so expect a further tie-in to the promised big picture for the franchise.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies:

  • Former Time Lord Matt Smith is now officially set to star as Mr. Collins in the upcoming Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Slated for a 2015 release, the film is exactly what it sounds like: Pride and Prejudice… but with zombies. Based on the best-selling satire by Seth Grahame-Smith, Matt Smith’s co-stars include Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows), Sam Riley (Maleficent), and Lily James (Cinderella).

Suicide Squad:

  • Right after Fox announced Deadpool, The Hollywood Reporter claimed that WB is moving forward with Suicide Squad, based on the ragtag DC Comics superhero (or villain, rather) team, and that David Ayer (End of Watch) is being targeted to direct. A longstanding group in the books, team members include a vast array of colorful characters from Captain Boomerang, Bane, Deadshot, Deathstroke, and fan-favorite Batman rogue, Harley Quinn. Who will make it in the film’s final cut is far from being announced, but chances are it will mirror the roster of the Squad seen in The CW’s hit TV superhero drama, Arrow.
