TM Movie News: Falcon, Monty Python, He-Man & more!

- by Steve Garcia, 10 March 2014

He-Man, Spider-Man, Sandman, Ant-Man, Zorro, and Santa! It’s about that time, my lovely Muties! What time is it?! Mega Monday Movie News Time!

Picture

Absolutely Anything:

  • Monty Python’s upcoming sci-fi film (yup, news to me too!) is raking up a star-studded cast, as Kate Beckinsale (Total Recall, Underworld)has just joined alongside Simon Pegg and Robin Williams! Beckinsale is set to play Pegg’s love interest, and, courtesy of Deadline, we have an unofficial synopsis:
  • "Pegg plays a disillusioned school teacher who suddenly finds he has the ability to do anything he wishes, a challenge bestowed upon him by a group of power-crazed aliens watching from space. The aliens are voiced by Terry Jones and his Python co-horts John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle and Michael Palin. Struggling with the new-found powers, he calls upon his loyal canine companion Dennis (voiced by Williams) to help him along the way. Mishap after mishap finally leads him to an ultimate conundrum: Should he choose the girl (Beckinsale) or the dog?"

The Amazing Spider-Man 3:

  • Sony has officially gone all in on the Spider-Man franchise, as they not only announced that Mark Webb will return to direct the third film in 2016, but that their plan is to release a new Spidey film every year! So to get everyone up to speed, this summer’s Amazing Spider-Man 2 will pit Spidey up against Electro, Rhino, and Green Goblin. The next two films on the backburner will be a Sinister Six movie and a solo-Venom film. Nothing is really known about those two particular projects other than that they’re happening, but it’s only inevitable that the three potentially huge franchises will clash in one gigantic movie! Sony’s sticking with Spider-Man, Fox has their X-Men (and Fantastic Four, I suppose), Marvel Studios has everything else in between, and nerds’ wallets will be drained completely by the time 2030 rolls around. Rejoice! We’re living in the golden age!

Ant-Man:

  • According to The Wrap, Watchmen star Patrick Wilson is in talks for joining the cast of Marvel’s first Phase Three film: Ant-Man! With Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas already starring as the two prominent Ant-Men, Scott Lang and an older Hank Pym, respectively, the Internet is ablaze with theories regarding who Wilson will be set to play. Among the theories, the most popular remains that Wilson will be playing a young Hank Pym, as the film will apparently be bouncing back and forth between the Ant-Man of the 1960’s and the present day, based on a rumor made way back when Edgar Wright drafted the first script. All that’s known for certain is that Marvel Studios is looking for “another charismatic leading man,” which could literally be anything—hero or villain. Wilson’s great and he’s my ideal choice for a younger Hank Pym, so make my fanboy dreams come true, Marvel!

Avengers: Age of Ultron:

  • On Tuesday, March 18, ABC will be airing a documentary entitled Marvel Studios: Assembling a Universe. The documentary will of course tell the story about how Marvel Studios came to be and yadda, yadda, yadda, but that’s not even the best part! Supposedly the documentary will offer an exclusive first look at Avengers: Age of Ultron! Kind of makes sense, considering that filming for the movie had just started, so there you have it! Oh, and there will reportedly be new footage for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Agents of SHIELD! Be sure to tune in, true believers!

Masters of the Universe:

  • When, oh when will He-Man grace the big screen once again? According to The Wrap, Harald Zwart (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones), Mike Cahill (Another Earth), and newcomer Chris McKay are on the short list of possible directors for the upcoming project. When is this happening? Who will play Skeletor? Does Evil-Lyn indeed look good in a mini-skirt?! So many questions!

Sandman:

  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Sandman movie is coming together nicely, as the award-winning Jack Thorne (How I Live Now) has officially signed on for writing the screenplay! David Goyer is still producing! It’s happening! …That’s all I got!

Santa Claus:

  • Yes, ladies and gentlemen, not even Santa is safe from the Hollywood reboot! Sony just bought a script based on a book called The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus by The Wizard of Oz writer L. Frank Baum. Supposedly this version of Santa’s origin has a taste of Viking roots to it, and that’s pretty damn cool. Looking forward to it!

Star Wars: Episode VII:

  • We have a villain! Maybe! Variety set the internet on fire after they reported that Adam Driver (Girls) is in final negotiations to play the unnamed villain in the highly anticipated Star Wars sequel. Of course Disney has the details of this franchise under extreme lock and key, the only apparent information regarding this villainous role is that “the character is said to be in the vein of iconic Star Wars villain Darth Vader.” 2015 isn’t so far, far away, Trash Muties!

Zorro:

  • If Santa gets a reboot, I guess Zorro gets a reboot, too! Sony is currently working on a reboot of the original Batman, and oddly enough, they’re using Chris Nolan’s Batman as an inspiration. Irony! Chris Boal is set to write the film, and that’s awesome because he’s a playwright and a competitive fencer!

STUFF YOU SHOULD LOOK AT:

Captain America: The Winter Soldier:

  • Did you see Falcon?! Let’s look at Falcon! LOOK AT HIM! And a really long, really awesome new trailer! And the actual Winter Soldier! LOOK AT ALL OF IT!

Godzilla:

  • OH MY GODZILLA, THAT TRAILER! LOOK AT IT AND ALL ITS GLORY!

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For:

  • It’s happening! New trailer’s out! LOOK AT IT!

And that’s a wrap! Who will Patrick Wilson play in the Ant-Man movie? Did that Winter Soldier trailer seal the deal for you? Where do you fall on this Sandman movie? Is a Masters of the Universe movie something you’re looking forward to? Are the Zorro and Santa reboots a part of Sony’s new Avengers-esque cinematic universe?! That’s a week, my lovelies! Be good to one another!
