TM Movie News: Giant-Size End of The Year Edition

- by The Rajun Cajun, 30 December 2012

Welcome to a Giant-Sized Edition of Rajun Cajun’s Movie News! There’s a whole bunch of stuff that we need to talk about before the year comes to a close, so without further adieu, sit back, relax, and let me learn you something about the good, the bad, and the ugly of cinema!

Picture

  • As always, let’s begin with the superhero movies. Samuel L Jackson, Nick Fury, was asked about a Nick Fury solo-film. On the subject, he said that his origin would be revealed in Captain America: Winter Soldier, and that a solo film probably won’t happen. That’s an awesome idea. I’d much rather see a SHIELD movie starring Hawkeye and Black Widow anyway. Good on you, Marvel/Disney.

  • While we’re on the Avengers, here’s some potential news for the sequel. In the DVD commentary for The Avengers, director Joss Whedon said that he originally wrote in another villain besides Loki, but he was scrapped in the final draft. He went on to say that the villain in question may make an appearance a little ways down the road. I wonder who it is. Kang the Conqueror? Ultron? MODOK? Fin Fang Foom?! Your guess is as good as mine.

It should also be noted that in the same commentary, he also stated that the original script included Wasp. So there were plans to introduce her after all. The rumor that the character will appear in Iron Man 3 is looking more and more truthful.

  • Onto Sony’s superhero, let’s talk about The Amazing Spider-Man sequel. Jamie Foxx, who will be playing the villain Electro, is really excited for this movie, and he’s going around telling people things he really shouldn’t be. First off, Electro’s costume’s going to be black and different from his original green and yellow costume from the books. That’s pretty boring, if you ask me. His costume, as lame as it was, was something of a favorite of mine. Anyway, he also revealed the origin of his character in the movie, so if you don’t want to hear potential spoilers, don’t read what’s about to be said… or typed:
Max Dillon has a lot of problems. People steal his ideas, his mother forgets his birthday, and he’s just a miserable guy. Then, Spider-Man becomes his friend; Dillon starts to think he’s a superhero because Spidey gives him a chance. Next he becomes Electro, in some sort of freak accident, and then he becomes a bad guy.

  • From Sony supers to Fox supers, let’s talk The Wolverine. A major cameo was announced for this movie, and it could go either way, depending on how you feel about the character. Apparently it’s going to be Jean Grey, the Phoenix. Personally I think it will only be a flashback or something to that effect, but the character is notorious for dying and coming back, so you never know.

  • As this year comes to an end, we’ve seen and heard about many remakes so far. Some of them good, some bad, and some just make you say “WHY THE F*CK IS THIS BEING MADE?!”The one I’m about to tell you about is one of those. Alright kiddies, let’s talk about the Jumanji remake. That is a thing now. This is where we are. I can kind of see why this is a thing tough, as 3D and IMAX are pretty big at the moment. But if they wanted to do that, however, they should have just did what they did with stuff like the Lion King, Raiders of the Lost Ark, or Jurassic Park and rerelease a re-mastered version of it for theaters. And are board games even a thing anymore? I can only imagine that if they were to truly do a remake of the film set in this generation, it would be some stupid iPhone game or something like that. For shame, Hollywood. Stoppit.

Somewhere in the world, the greatest Jumanji fan is writing an outraged post about those bastards attempting to remake this masterpiece.

  • Speaking of movies about iPhone games, let’s discuss… The Angry Birds movie. I have no words for this one. It is set to be released for 2016. Watch it. Don’t. I don’t care. Hopefully it’ll be scrapped before then, but that’s wishful thinking.

  • I might as well get all the bad news out of the way, so let’s discuss another bad idea, shall we? A Cars spinoff that will be about planes. Let it sink in. … Ok, let’s hear the full story. Basically, it was supposed to go straight-to-DVD, but now it is not for whatever reason. The even stranger thing, to me, is that it isn’t even a Pixar movie either, so even if you were thinking “Well, it’s Pixar. How bad could it get?” you were wrong, my good sirs and madams. Skip this one if you are looking for quality, guys. This is nothing but a cash-grab for the kiddies.

  • In other upsetting sequel news, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is getting a sequel. Say what you will about it, but I absolutely hated the first one, so you can imagine how I feel about this story. Did you know that it made over a billion dollars? People, get your lives together. Don’t watch this garbage. Stick with the original animated Disney one. It was vastly superior.

  • Now that the bad news is out of the way, let’s talk about the good stuff! Anchorman 2, the sequel to quite possibly the best Will Ferrell movie ever, is set for December 20, 2013. Hell. Yes. That’s quite a date for a movie like that, seeing as how that’s when the Oscar material comes out. It’s an Oscar contender, right? Right?!

  • Sequel news everywhere! 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes is getting a sequel in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. That’s quite a sentence. Anyway, James Franco, who played a significant role in the 2011 film, is reportedly not going to be in the next installment. Maybe that means that the sequel will take place much further in time compared to the original, but your speculation is as good as mine. Personally I’d really want to see an immediate continuation, but whatever. I have faith, because the first one was incredible.

  • Things to look at! First up, let’s take a look at some newly-released test footage for movies that never came out: Hong Kong Phooey and Marvin the Martian. Look at it… Or not. These look pretty bad.

  • Trailers! The Pacific Rim trailer came out, and it looks pretty damn awesome. Giant robots led by Idris Elba versus giant dinosaur-like sea monsters in a giant, big-budget, summer movie, blockbuster. What’s not to love? It’ll either be the best movie ever or the worst movie ever, but either way, I win, and so will you. Look at it!

  • It would be a crime if I didn’t mention the Man of Steel trailer. I know, this was out a long time ago, but it’s my movie news, so sit back and hear what I need to say about it! I. Love. This. Trailer. Oh my God, it’s fantastic. In fact, this thing doesn’t even look like a superhero movie. It looks like legitimate Oscar-bait. It has everything you would want in a Superman film and even more. Doomed planet? Check. Desperate scientists? Check. A kindly couple from Kansas? Check. A villain to punch? Check. Superman is earth’s last hope and he has all the awesome powers to do something awesome about it? Check and Check:

This trailer also had a line in it by John Kent, Superman’s adoptive father, which is certainly worth talking about. In the trailer, a young Clark Kent saves a school bus filled with children by lifting it out of the water. After Clark asks his father “What was I supposed to do? Let them die?” Pa Kent pauses for a slight moment and replies with a simple “Maybe.” Needless to say, people flipped, but I’m going tell you why the line is not a big deal:

In the Superman origin story by Mark Waid, Superman: Birthright, it was revealed that Martha Kent, Clark’s adoptive mother, was barren. Because she could never have children, and because Clark literally came falling from the sky to get to the kindly couple, you can imagine just how much Clark Kent means to them. If the kid ever made his powers public, the government would instantaneously take him away from them, or even worse, attempt kill him. To prevent that from happening, Pa Kent was very strict about Clark using his abilities, and was unsettled by the thought of his boy going around using his powers willy-nilly. After a beautifully-written heart to heart, though, Clark convinced him that using his powers for good was something he needed to do, Jonathan gave Clark his blessing. So, in closing, read your comics people. This line will be explained, I promise, and don’t take what you heard in the trailer out of context.

  • Lastly, and even if this isn’t actual film news, I feel like this video absolutely needs to be shared. This Youtube user, Kees van Dijkhuizen jr., compiles clips of movies ever year, and makes a beautiful montage of them. Trying to attempt to explain how cool this video is would be completely asinine, so why don’t you just look at it? Look at the greatness of Cinema 2012:

And that’s all I wrote, ladies and gentlemen. Did Jamie Foxx get you pumped for the next Spider-Man movie? Will you sit through a Jumanji remake, or even an Angry Birds film? How about those trailers? Pumped for Superman, or Pacific Rim, or both? Before we part ways, let me just say that bringing you the movie news, the good as well as the bad, has been an absolute pleasure. Dissecting what Hollywood has in store for us, the audience, is something I adore doing, and as long as someone keeps reading, I will keep writing until forever. Thank you so much for sticking with this segment and this site in general. We could never get any further without you, and may 2013 bring us another incredible year of these articles. Thank you, have a safe and happy New Year, and I’ll be seeing you next year. RC out!
