TM Movie News: Goosebumps, Ant-Man, Mickey Mouse, more!

- by Steve Garcia, 25 March 2013

Movie News Time! Mickey Mouse?! Ant-Man?! Goosebumps?! A billion new trailers and newly announced directors of upcoming movies about things?!!?!?! Let’s talk, shall we?

Picture

Ant-Man:

A few days ago, Edgar Wright’s test footage for the upcoming Ant-Man film was leaked online from last year’s San Diego Comic Con.

  • Steve Says: As a huge Hank Pym fan, I can finally and safely say that all my itty-bitty doubts about the film have been put to bed. Let’s go, Ant-Man! (This video is being removed fast, but it should still be viewable here)

Evil Dead:

The anticipated reboot of the Evil Dead franchise hasn’t even come out, and already director Fede Alvarez has started writing the sequel. “The scariest movie ever made” gets its wide release on April 5, and went through a reported 50 gallons of fake blood in its heart-pounding climax.

  • Steve Says: Is it April yet? Cause it should be April. A little birdie told me that you should stick around after the credits, too. A certain big-chinned actor may or may not make a cameo appearance.

Goosebumps:

Director Rob Letterman (Monsters vs. Aliens) is attached to direct a new feature film based on the once-popular book series, Goosebumps, written by R.L. Stine.

  • Steve Says: I vaguely remember the older short movies based on the books when I was a kid, and I remember feeling kind of indifferent towards them. This series did have a huge following, however, so it’s gotta be cool for them to be getting this now. Based on Letterman’s resume, it looks like this’ll be aimed for the kids.

Jurassic Park 4:

Universal Studios announced that Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) will be directing Jurassic Park 4. Stephen Spielberg will produce this highly anticipated sequel, and Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) will pen the script.

  • Steve Says: Well it’s about damn time this movie escaped development hell! I’ll be looking forward to what’s coming. I just hope that they won’t overdo the CGI. The original Jurassic Park was so brilliant in that it was pretty much all practical effects. Don’t screw it up, Trevorrow! (No pressure, though.)

Mickey Mouse:

International and beloved icon Mickey Mouse will star in 19 new animated shorts this year, starting on June 28th.

  • Steve Says: While not “movie news” per se, it’s awesome to see the character come back to his roots. It’s interesting how after the recent reveal of the possible Roger Rabbit crossover film, this gets announced. Do they have something to do with one another? Whatever, it’s a win-win!

Pete's Dragon:

Disney plans to remake its 1977 film Pete’s Dragon. The film is about an orphan named Pete whose best friend was an imaginary dragon named Elliot. Despite the original film being a musical, the remake will reportedly not be, and the writers attached to the project’s screenplay are David Lowery and Toby Halbrooks (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints).

  • Steve Says: Never saw the original, so I really can’t give much input. Cool? I dunno, it kind of sounds like a kiddie version of that one movie where Sean Connery is the voice of a dragon. Dragon Heart? Was that it? Either way, I’ll watch it, I guess.

Transformers 4:

The plot synopsis was revealed by the Michigan Film Office via a press release: "As humanity picks up the pieces, following the conclusion of 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon,' Autobots and Decepticons have all but vanished from the face of the planet. However, a group of powerful, ingenious businessman and scientists attempt to learn from past Transformer incursions and push the boundaries of technology beyond what they can control – all while an ancient, powerful Transformer menace sets Earth in his crosshairs. The epic adventure and battle between good and evil, freedom and enslavement ensues."

  • Steve Says: How is this movie not called “Trans4mers?” Either way, there ya go, fans.

Veronica Mars:

A hit TV series created by Rob Thomas, Veronica Mars was about a high school-to-college student played by Kristen Bell that moonlighted as a private investigator under her father’s tutelage. Thomas and Bell launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $2 million to fund a feature film to follow the hit TV show. The goal was reached within ten hours, and production of the film will begin this summer.

  • Steve Says: While I’ve never actually seen the show before (and probably really should) this is some pretty incredible news. The fans of this show are so into the idea of this movie actually raised $2 million in record time (as far as Kickstarter is concerned). And, just like that, it’ll happen. This could be the future of how movies get made, folks. You want an Aquaman movie? Let’s raise $1 million on Kickstarter! You want a Christmas movie that features Santa, Bugs Bunny, Superman, and Uncle Sam? We’ll raise $5 million on Kickstarter! See where I’m going with this? The people have spoken, and it’s clear that Hollywood will listen (if you pay them enough, that is).

STUFF YOU SHOULD LOOK AT:

Bad Motherfucker:

This is a music video from Biting Elbows, and… My God, it’s intense. Look at it if you like awesome first-person action camerawork!

The Colony:

A trailer for a new movie starring Laurence Fishburne. Look at it if you like Larry Fishburne and post-apocalyptic snowy wastelands!

Despicable Me 2:

A new trailer’s out! Look at it if you liked the first one, Steve Carrel, or those wacky little minions! And if you haven’t seen the first one, look at that too! It was awesome!

Epic:

Another trailer is out for this pretty-looking animated movie from the makers of Ice Age and Rio! Look at it if you like FernGully! (Because it’s not like this is the same movie, or anything)

Kick-Ass 2:

The red band trailer for Kick-Ass 2 is here, and it kicks ass! Look at it if you’re excited about Jim Carrey coming back to real-people movies again! And the movie looks awesome too!

Star Trek Into Darkness:

A new international trailer is out! Look at it if you like new footage, because there’s a ton of it!

Turbo:

A new trailer about a snail that goes fast is out! Look at it because snails!

World War Z:

A new poster is out and it looks pretty damn awesome! Look at it!

Picture

And that’s that! Pumped for the new movies and their new directors? Are you a "Veronica Mars" Kickstarter supporter? What do you feel about Ant-Man? What say you about Trans4mers? (I’m calling it this from now on) What about those new trailers? How about that Jim Carrey, eh? Until next time, this is Steve signing off. Be good to one another!
