TM Movie News: Indiana Jones, Spider-Man, Aquaman & more

- by Steve Garcia, 15 December 2014

Happy Monday, my lovely Muties! Sony, Spider-Man, and Super Mario Brothers?! Aquaman, Indiana Jones, and Spongebob, too!  C’mon and gather around, kiddies! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Picture

Aquaman:

  • According to some leaked emails obtained by The Daily Beast, Columbia Pictures’s Michael De Luca let it be known that Jeff Nichols (Mud) will probably be directing the Aquaman movie starring Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones). Momoa has signed a four-picture deal to play the Atlantean superhero, and will most likely make his debut in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in March, 2016. The character is also expected to star in 2017’s Justice League before his solo film in 2018.

Doctor Strange:

  • Now that Benedict Cumberbatch has been officially announced to play the Sorcerer Supreme, the search for his mentor, only known as “The Ancient One” has begun!  Reported by the notoriously hit-or-miss Latino Review, Morgan Freeman, Ken Watanabe (Godzilla), and Bill Nighy (Love Actually) have all been approached for the role. With a huge name like Morgan Freeman, it would be safe to assume that the Ancient One will play a huge role in the upcoming Marvel Studios feature. Directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister), Doctor Strange is slated for a November 4, 2016 release.

Indiana Jones 5:

  • When Disney bought Lucasfilm long ago in 2012, all eyes have (rightly) been on a galaxy far, far away. But at a recent breakfast with Variety, Disney CEO Bob Iger gave hope to fans everywhere that the other legendary Lucasfilm goldmine, Indiana Jones, will be getting a new movie as well! Reporter Marc Graser tweeted the following from the event:

  • Being that there one Star Wars film planned for every year after 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens until at least 2019, it may be quite a while for the gears to shift onto Indy, but I think I can speak for everyone that it’s a blessing that the franchise will not end with 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The crusade continues!

Spider-Man:

  • Could Sony and Marvel Studios set aside their differences to give us a Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? The recent Sony hack revealed a plethora of email exchanges that have unlocked the many alternative doors to the Webhead’s future. In an email dated October 13, 2014, there is proof that Sony and Marvel were in talks to have Spider-Man appear in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. Here’s a passage from an email exchange between Columbia’s Michael De Luca and co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, courtesy of The Daily Beast:
  • “I really feel, in my heart of hearts, that the new spiderman [sic] in cap 3 could just appear in his own film, be it sinister six or a kick ass spidey film of his own, after that intro in cap 3 and people would be cool with it.”
  • De Luca also goes on to mention the upcoming Sinister Six movie could act as a soft reboot for Spider-Man, starring a new actor following the box-office disappointment of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. He then suggests that the untitled female Spider-Man character team-up film, Venom, and Sinister Six should all build towards a huge blow-out Spider-Man movie universe film to compete with an alleged X-Men/Fantastic Four crossover by Fox:
  • “[Simon] Kinberg told me fox is steering Xmen and Fantastic Four into an eventual team up film. Seems to me maybe, since the Spider-man universe itself is deep, you guys should look at sinister six, new spidey, female movie and venom as linked pieces leading to eventual mega movie ala Feige and Fox and not stand alone single films. It's early in all these and you can still map out a blueprint for connective tissue.”
  • In a separate email from De Luca to Pascal dated October 21, he also mentioned that The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were planned to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Latino Review (who apparently became experts on the story overnight) claim that even if talks between Sony and Marvel fell through regarding Spidey’s appearance in Civil War, there is still hope for a future crossover. According to them, if Marvel were to include Spider-Man in their films they will not give Sony creative control, there will be no ties to any previous Spider-Man films, and that the character will be recast entirely. The site continues to say that Marvel’s Spider-Man will skip the origin story and that the film will instead “focus on the difficulties of being a teenager and a superhero with a romance side-story.”

Super Mario Bros.:

  • With the Sony hack also came a huge surprise: they’re working towards a Super Mario Bros. movie! In an email written by producer Avi Arad to Amy Pascal, he said, “I am the proud father of mario the animated film.” In a separate email, he included a picture of himself and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and wrote,”Happy ceo, lets get together, it’s the mother load.” Pascal then forwarded the email to TriStar Pictures’s Tom Rothman with the massage ““Avi closed Mario brothers. Animated.” Of course this is a very early step in pre-production, so anything can happen to this potential feature. Let’s keep our hopes up!

And there you have it, my lovely Muties! What’s your opinion of Marvel/Sony’s Spider-Man? Would you watch a Mario movie? What would you want in a new Indiana Jones movie? Let us know! That’ll do it for this week, ladies and germs! Have an excellent week ahead and be good to one another!
