TM Movie News: Justice League, Assassin's Creed & more!

- by Steve Garcia, 21 March 2016

Happy Monday, my lovely Muties! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice:

  • Early fan screenings have taken the internet by storm and they’re overwhelmingly positive! Many tweets from various screenings praise Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and of course, Ben Affleck’s Batman. Many claim that it took the daunting task of catching up to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (which is currently twelve movies deep) and effortlessly succeeded in one film, and some hold it in higher regard than Man of Steel. As good as that sounds, however, just be reminded that these screenings were for diehard fans that were probably going to love it regardless. Avatar, a movie that was similarly beloved, may have looked pretty and set the standards for technological achievements in film, but was still a pretty generic plot that was filled with gaping holes. So just be cautious!
  • While promoting the movie, director Zack Snyder revealed in an interview with Collider that both Batman villains the Joker and the Riddler almost made the final cut. Check out his quote:
  • The Joker and The Riddler both came close to being in this movie. We talked about the possibility of putting them in. [Screenwriter] Chris Terrio and I talked about it a lot and felt that their mythological presence is felt in the movie and that’s cool, but I didn’t want to get my eye too far off the ball because I needed to spend the time, frankly, with Batman and Superman to understand the conflict.
  • A smart call on Snyder’s part, as this movie already has so much to introduce such as Batman, Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor, Doomsday, Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg, and lord knows who else we haven’t already seen in the trailers or heard from official statements. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters this Friday!

Justice League:

  • In addition to the Batman v Superman hype, Snyder also spoke to Collider about Justice League, its logo, potential subtitle, and shooting schedule:
  • “Right now the working title is Justice League. Actually, I’m in that phase where I’ve been drawing logos and I’ve been drawing title treatments and stuff like that to try and figure out what it means, what Justice League is, visually, so we’ll see if the name evolves with this visual presentation. The schedule’s close, it’s not quite as long, but give or take. We have a more efficient machine in England because we have a big backlot that we built for Gotham and Metropolis, so it’ll be easier to photograph than when you have to close down streets. But it’s a beautiful backlot. The Batman v Superman logo I drew so long ago. I know there’s versions of it that existed anyway, but that one in particular I [drew]. The thing that’s kinda cool about the Batman suit [and] our Batman logo is that the dimension is the same as the Man of Steel logo, the bottom of the bat. So I said, ‘No, it’s cool. It’s okay. It’s mythologically okay.’”
  • Personally, they should just stick with “Justice League.” It’s a name brand that’s well-recognized and fans have been dying to see a Hollywood adaptation of it for decades. Justice League is slated for November 17, 2017.

Tomb Raider:

  • Last time, I told you that a Tomb Raider reboot was happening. Today, I’m telling you it’s happening, and it might star none other than Episode VII’s Daisy Ridley. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Ridley confirmed that there have been talks with the studio for her to star, and that she’s simply waiting for someone to say “I want you, let’s do it.” Ridley also revealed that the film does not have a script yet, and that just because she’s a major part of Star Wars, it doesn’t mean that she’s too busy to play in other film sandboxes. I’m totally for her being the new Lara Croft, so hopefully that gets to happen! Tomb Raider is slated for some time in 2017.
