TM Movie News: LuthorBerg, Avengers, Sausage Party & more!

- by Steve Garcia, 10 February 2014

Happy Monday, Trash Muties! I got LuthorBerg! I got Avengers casting! I got Super Bowl commercials out the wazoo! I even got a Sausage Party for you! It’s Movie News Time!

Picture

Avengers: Age of Ultron:

  • If you thought Man of Steel 2 was getting crowded, wait until you get a load of what the Avengers has to offer! According to Variety, Paul Bettany has been officially cast as Vision, a character who, in the comics, was created by Ultron himself. What makes this story particularly interesting is that Bettany is already in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as JARVIS, Tony Stark’s witty AI. Being that Ultron’s origins will be very different from the books for the movie, it’s only logical that Vision will follow that same path. Soon after the casting announcement, Latino Review claimed that Ms. Marvel is also set to appear in the film, and will be the last major casting role. Of course, it’s only a rumor that only they’re talking about, so take that information however you will. Either way, Age of Ultron is gonna be huge and I love it!

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers:

  • Disney recently announced that plans are in motion to bring the Recue Rangers to the big screen in a live-action/CGI fashion. Relative newcomer Robert Rugan has signed on to direct, there’s still no release date, and that’s all I have to say about that!

Man of Steel Sequel:

  • In the casting news heard ‘round the world, Jeremy Irons and Jesse Eisenberg have been officially cast as Alfred and Lex Luthor, respectively. Irons for Alfred is a no-brainer, and after re-watching The Social Network, LuthorBerg will be an amazing addition to the already fantastic cast. Here’s what director Zack Snyder said about the decision:
  • “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”
  • Among these “new and unexpected directions” that Snyder was talking about, there were some rumors flying around that Luthor’s new onscreen origin will revolve around him going from a small-time gang leader with a Metropolis tattoo sleeve, to one of the richest men in the world who wants to use the Batman to kill the Superman. Rumors or not, whatever they decide to do with the character will just be another addition to the evolution to who the character is, as he’s been everything from a wife-beating drunk to the President of the United States. If the Lex of 2016 just so happens to be a younger, more evil, snottier version of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, then so be it! LuthorBerg!

The Purge: Anarchy:

  • The surprise goldmine that was The Purge officially has a sequel with a shiny new subtitle! The Purge: Anarchy will be directed, written, and produced once again by James DeMonaco, and actor Frank Grillo (Warrior, The Grey) is set to star. Neat!

Sausage Party:

  • Seth Rogan, James Franco, Michael Cera, and Jonah Hill will get together again for an R-rated animated film entitled Sausage Party! The project, slated for a 2015 release, will also feature the voice talents of Edward Norton, Nick Kroll, Kristen Wiig, and David Krumholtz. Here’s an unofficial plot synopsis, courtesy of TheWrap!
  • “’Sausage Party’ follows one heroic piece of meat’s quest to discover the truth about his existence. After falling out of a shopping cart, the sausage protagonist teams up with some new friends to embark on a perilous journey through the supermarket and return to their aisles before the Fourth of July sale.”

Thor 3:

  • The God of Thunder will be back in a third installment, and writers Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost are going to write it! Of course it’s still way too early for any sort of plot details and speculations are up in the air because Avengers: Age of Ultron can have an impact on the Mighty Thor’s future, but the concept of Ragnarök has left the internet abuzz. For those of you unaware, Ragnarök is basically the lead up to a great battle resulting with the killing of all the gods, Thor included. With the ending of Thor: The Dark World in mind, one could assume that “Odin” will be up to some very, very mischievous things in the faraway sequel… Stay tuned, Thunderheads!

Taken 3:

  • The absurdly successful Taken franchise is set to become a trilogy, as director Oliver Megaton, and Liam Neeson are officially locked into the next installment. Forest Whitaker (The Butler, The Last Stand) is in talks to join Neeson in the sequel, and production will begin this March. As for who will be taken next, our hands are up in the air. Let’s hope that it’s on par with the original!

Uncharted:

  • With Assassin’s Creed, Sly Cooper, and Ratchet & Clank all getting the big screen treatment in the next few years, word on that Uncharted movie has been pretty silent… Until recently! Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) has been in talks to direct the highly-demanded film adaptation of the popular PlayStation franchise. Have faith, Nathan Drake fans! The wheels are still in motion!
