TM Movie News: More Marvel, More Sequels and MORE!

- by Steve Garcia, 24 March 2014

Sequels! Remakes! Sequels of sequels, and remakes of remakes! Hold on to your butts, kids! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Picture

The Amazing Spider-Man 4:

  • Director Mark Webb announced that he will, in fact, not be returning to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 4, and that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will “close out [his] tenure.” And that’s it. Next story!

Captain America 3:

  • Marvel will not back down from that magical May 6th, 2016 date, as they happily announced that Captain America 3 will go up against Man of Steel 2 in this box-office battle royale! Of course, anything could happen between now and then, but you have to give Marvel the benefit of the doubt for being so confident in their property. And rightfully so, apparently, as early reactions for the upcoming sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, have been overwhelmingly positive. Way to stick to your guns, guys! I’ll see you at the movies! (…But Batman/Superman first. I’m not moving.)
  • But just what will Cap 3 be about, now that you’ve already fought Red Skull and the Winter Soldier? In a recent interview with the directors, they teased that the crazy Cap from the 1950’s could be the potential big baddie. Say whaaaaaaaaaat?! An excellent story arc in the books. Very, very interesting!

Fantastic Four:

  • We have our FF, but who will be their Dr. Doom? According to The Wrap, director Josh Trank has narrowed the list down to four: Sam Riley (Maleficent), Eddie Redmayne (Les Misérables), Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), and Domhnall Gleeson (About Time). At least it’s not a gender-bending situation like previous rumors suggested, so I guess we’re on the right track!
  • In other FF news, Fox has just set a release date for a sequel to the movie that hasn’t even started filming yet! You can watch that on July 14, 2017, but I think we should all focus on the first one first (ya know, the normal thing to do). That one comes out on March 6, 2015. Along with this new release date, Fox also set aside July 3, 2018 for a “mystery Marvel project.” Could this be the X-Force movie? Deadpool? Silver Surfer? A Fantastic Four/X-Men crossover? Your guess is as good as mine, my lovely Muties!

Ghostbusters 3:

  • The sequel that will never die, ladies and gentlemen! After director Ivan Reitman (he’s the guy who did the first two) allegedly and rightfully dropped out of making the third film, Deadline reported that The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have picked it up… and suddenly this is a movie people are interested in watching again. Everything they’ve done has struck gold so far (The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street, Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs), so I suppose they should get the benefit of the doubt if this rumor holds any water. Everything is (kind of) awesome!

The Grudge:

  • Holy remakes of remakes, Batman! Director Sam Raimi is apparently going to give The Grudge the reboot treatment, according to The Hollywood Reporter. If true, this will be the third time this film gets the go-around since the original Japanese film hit theaters in 2002. What is it with this movie, guys? Is this a thing people really want? Well… I guess if it’s Raimi, I’ll give it a chance. We’ll see how this goes!

The Incredibles 2:

  • Disney has officially announced that a sequel to the beloved Pixar film, The Incredibles, is on the way, and that director Brad Bird is involved. Get hyped! In other news, Disney also announced that Cars 3 will also be hitting a theater near you as well. And nobody cares!

The Jungle Book:

  • In a world of coincidences, both Disney and WB are working on new, live-action adaptations of the beloved novel, The Jungle Book. Disney’s will be directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man), and WB has just announced that Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings, Rise of the Planet of the Apes) will be directing their version. Either of those are a huge sell for me, but Disney just casted Idris Elba as the evil Shere Khan, so as far as I’m concerned, they’re winning the competition right now!  Disney’s is expected for a 2015 release, WB is still undecided, and that’s the bear necessities of life!

Jem and the Holograms:

  • Because absolutely anything and everything needs a movie nowadays, the 80’s cartoon “Jem and the Holograms” will be getting the live-action film treatment very, very soon. G.I. Joe director Jon M. Chu is currently attached to the project, and in a truly odd play, he announced that casting will be done through… Tumblr? Check out the video below! (But only if you want to!):

Man of Steel 2:

  • Filming might be starting within the next few months, but according to Jeremy Irons (our  new Alfed), the script hasn’t even been finalized! Check out the video interview:

The Last of Us:

  • Sony is partnering up with Naughty Dog and Screen Gems to make a “Last of Us” film, and apparently that’s a very big deal! Here’s a brief synopsis, courtesy of the guys at Deadline:
  • “Hardened survivor Joel teams with young and capable companion Ellie to journey through a radically transformed world some 20 years after an infectious pandemic ravages humanity. The game has won numerous awards and has been a big seller since its release last summer.”

The LEGO Movie 2:

  • Warner Bros. has officially hired Chris McKay to direct the sequel to the awesomely charming LEGO movie! The film is going to be in good hands, as he was heavily involved in the first film as the co-animation director. The directors of the original film, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, will be producing. Looking forward to it!

Wolverine 3:

  • Mark your calendars, ladies and gents! Fox has set an official release date, March 3, 2017, for a third Wolverine movie! Director James Mangold will return to direct, and writer David James Kelly will be penning the script. Superheroes should be nothing new to Kelly, as he was credited to writing the Joe Carnahan directed Daredevil reboot that was scrapped just before DD’s rights reverted back to Marvel Studios. The Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, is expected to return for the third installment (well, technically it’s the eighth), but speculation is high that this will be his swan song for the character, given his stance on recasting the role last month. With comic book author Mark Millar’s recent involvement in Fox’s superhero film franchises (looking at you specifically, Fantastic Four!), methinks that if this is indeed Jackman’s last Wolverine flick, we might be looking at an “Old Man Logan” adaptation. And that’s AWESOME. Stay tuned!

STUFF YOU SHOULD LOOK AT:

The Amazing Spider-Man 2:

Picture

Peanuts:

  • They’re making a Peanuts movie! And the animation style actually looks very, very pretty! LOOK AT IT!

And that’s that, my marvelous Muties! Which Jungle Book movie has your attention? Does The Grudge need another remake? How would you feel if this was Jackman’s last time as Wolverine? What do you think of that Avengers concept art? Are you a fan of the 1950’s Cap as a villain, or would you go with someone else? And finally, speaking of the star-spangled man, which movie will you be seeing first on May 6th, 2015: Cap or Batman/Superman? That’ll do it for this week, ladies and germs! Be good to one another!
