TM Movie News: OH MY GOD, IT'S BATTLE CAT & other news!

- by Steve Garcia, 9 March 2014

Happy Monday, my lovely Muties! Toys and fairytales! Superheroes and evil robots! Spider-Man and the Battle Cat?! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Picture

Barbie:

  • Screenwriter Diablo Cody will be touching up the script for the upcoming Barbie movie. Riding off of the success of The LEGO Movie, Barbie and Masters of the Universe (which we’re definitely talking about later) will be the next toys turned movies in the Sony house. Jenny Bicks (What a Girl Wants) penned the original script, it is supposed to be a live-action comedy, and I can’t think of anything remotely interesting to contribute to this story. NEXT!

Beauty and the Beast:

  • The tale as old as time’s cast just got a little bigger with Luke Evans playing Gaston: the coolest Disney villain ever created. Evans’s talent was recently wasted in Universal’s Dracula Untold, but it seems as though he has his career back on track for the soon to be Disney hit. Evans will be starring alongside the equally talented Emma Watson (Harry Potter) and Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), who will be playing Belle and the Beast, respectively. Beauty and the Beast will be coming to a theater near you sometime in 2016.

Independence Day 2:

  • Roland Emmerich’s sequel to Independence Day just got a lot more interesting! While Will Smith won’t be making a comeback, it appears that his character’s son will be played by Jessie Usher (Level Up). I’m sure Jayden Smith is crushed… Anyway, the real story here is the triumphant return of Jeff Goldblum, who will indeed be reprising his role as computer guy David Levinson, aka the best part about the first movie. Not on Independence Day at all, Independence Day 2 is hitting theaters on June 24, 2016!

Spider-Man:

  • Oh, Spider-Man! Since the Sony/Marvel deal to put Spidey into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, everyone and their mother has been wondering about his next solo movie slated for July, 2017. According to the totally untrustworthy rumor site, Latino Review, it seems that Cabin in the Woods’s Drew Goddard will be writing and directing “The Spectacular Spider-Man.”  I find this worth mentioning because solely because Goddard was attached to the seemingly now-canned Sinister Six feature, as well as Marvel/Netflix’s upcoming “Daredevil” series. He’s also worked closely with Joss Whedon too, for what it’s worth, so if this rumor is true, things are looking pretty bright for the Web Slinger! …But that’s not all!
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s very own directors, Anthony and Joe Russo have signed a first-look deal with Sony! They’re also directing Captain America: Civil War for Marvel Studios, which will most likely be Spider-Man’s first appearance in the MCU. Coincidence? I think not!
  • Here’s what I think: Goddard will direct the first new Spider-Man movie (and its direct sequels) after Spidey’s first appearance in Civil War. And because Marvel is all about the continuity and everyone loves the Russo brothers, I 100% believe that they will be behind Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff franchise. This means that they will write, direct, and/or be behind the scenes of stuff like the Sinister Six, Venom, and that Aunt May movie we’ve all been looking forward to… OR NOT! But I’m calling it here and now, folks!

Toy Story 4:

  • Pixar President Jim Morris had quite a few things to say about the status of Toy Story 4! Check it:
  • "It’s not a continuation of the end of Toy Story 3. Temporarily it is, but it will be a love story. It will be a romantic comedy. The focus is not going to be placed on the interaction between the characters and children. The third film had ended in a very beautiful way and completed the trilogy. I think this film won’t be part of that trilogy. It’s a separate story, which I don’t know if it will have a sequel."
  • Director John Lasseter also had a word about the upcoming sequel:
  • “We love these characters so much; they are like family to us. We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew [Stanton], Pete [Docter], Lee [Unkrich] and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie — and I wanted to direct it myself.”
  • I think it’s extremely comforting and endearing that they both hold the ending of the Toy Story trilogy in such high regard, that they’re willing to leave Buzz and Woody’s story alone for the next one. The term “romantic comedy” definitely has me skeptical about a movie about children’s toys, but if Lasseter is on board (who directed the first two Toy Story films) is on board, I have no choice but to stand by him. Don’t pull a Cars 2 with this one, Pixar! We trust you!

Wolverine 3:

  • Apparently if you wanna know anything about an upcoming movie, just tweet at the director! James Mangold confirmed that Wolverine 3 is shooting next year. Awesome!
