TM Movie News: Puppet Master, Space Jam, Aquaman & more!

- by Steve Garcia, 3 May 2016

Happy Tuesday, my lovely Muties! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Aquaman:

  • Contrary to the rumor that James Wan (The Conjuring) was leaving the Aquaman solo film, the director took the opportunity to tweet his status on the upcoming project. The reports started after it was announced that Seth Grahame-Smith (Pride Prejudice and Zombies) left WB’s Flash film over “creative differences.” This story just goes to show you that unless something is confirmed by a reliable source, to take rumors with a gigantic grain of salt. As you can see, Wan is still attached to Aquaman, and it’s coming out on July 27, 2018. Two years from now. We can all relax again.

Puppet Master:
  • Ever hear of that 1980s horror Nazi puppet movie about Nazi puppets doing Nazi puppet things? It doesn’t matter because it’s getting remade! S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk) has just been hired to write up the script for the upcoming film titled (yes, this is real) Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich. What’s more is that this ambitious little project is going to be a part of a “Puppet Master universe.” Queue up that creepy Age of Ultron trailer music and get your ass in gear because this is a thing that’s happening and everyone absolutely needs to know about it. Don’t like it? IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK.

Space Jam 2:

  • Hold the presses, ladies and gentlemen. Forget everything you’ve read up to this point. Superheroes are old news and horror remakes are a dime a dozen. The real reason I’m writing this article and not something else this week is because THEY’RE DOING SPACE JAM 2! After the years of rumors and speculations, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that WB is moving forward with Space Jam 2 and that it’ll star LeBron James with Fast & Furious director Justin Lin attached to direct. The greatest time to be alive is now! Of course Michael Jordan is pretty much obligated to have a cameo, but the real question is how they are ever going to top that incredible soundtrack! Space Jam 2 is slated to release whenever WB feels like it. Let’s play some basketball!

X-Men: Apocalypse:

  • In other, much less important news, director Bryan Singer responded to the negative fan reactions to how Apocalypse looks in this month’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Here’s his position:
  • “[The first trailer] was simply Oscar using his normal voice — which is wonderful; his performance is fantastic — but that was never the intention. We just needed those words to govern the first teaser. So people thought, ‘Oh, wait, is that going to be his voice during the whole movie?’ It’s like, no, but to tell the story of the first teaser, we needed the voice, and I hadn’t recreated the voice yet. So then people were like, ‘He’s small.’ I’m like, ‘Okay, I got the same shit when I cast a six-foot-three actor to play five-foot-four Wolverine. I got the same shit when Quicksilver’s very sweet, 1970s costume was released on an Empire Magazine cover.’ You know, every time. I could have made him a giant through the whole movie, or some muscle-bound guy who can’t act — I could always do that. But the reality is, among his many powers — and you will see him change size — but among his many powers is his power of persuasion, and it was very important that he’d be able to connect with his horsemen, at their level, and that he’d be played by a guy who can actually act like Oscar, who’s a fantastic actor.”
  • I’ll be honest. I’m totally with Singer here regarding the backlash against his Apocalypse so far, but this movie doesn’t look so great. Let’s recap: the first trailer’s money shot was of bald Professor X. Trailer two was a music video. The last trailer was about Mystique, the most shoehorned character in the entire franchise and it teased a Wolverine appearance (you know, a character we’ve seen in every X-Men movie ever). I know I’m probably gonna enjoy this movie at the end of the day, but the marketing of this thing has been… less than great. I guess we’ll see for ourselves on May 27!
