TM Movie News: Quicksilver, Grumpy Cat, Mecha Giamatti!

- by Steve Garcia, 3 June 2013

Quicksilver conundrums! Sequels we don’t want! Old cartoons and WWE superstars team up to save the world and solve mysteries! Grumpy Cat! This is either the best article ever or the worst, but welcome to a GIANT-SIZED edition of Move News!

Picture

Alice in Wonderland Sequel:

Director James Bobin (The Muppets) is in early negotiations to helm the sequel to the 2010 billion dollar Tim Burton film, Alice in Wonderland. The script has reportedly already been written by Linda Woolverton, and its current working title is Into the Looking Glass. Its release date has yet to be confirmed.

  • Steve Says: Oh boy, another one… Well, I think it’s safe to say that this isn’t the least bit surprising that it’s getting a sequel at all because it made a billion dollars, and Disney loves money. Personally, though, I think they’re on the right track with getting a fun director taking control of a series like this. I’m not saying I’m looking forward to it yet, but… I’m not not looking forward to it. Double negatives up in here.

The Avengers 2 & X-Men: Days of Future Past:

After Avengers director Joss Whedon confirmed the superheroes Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in the upcoming 2015 sequel, X-Men director Bryan Singer announced via twitter that Quicksilver will also be appearing in his movie X-Men: Days of Future Past, and will be played by Evan Peters (American Horror Story). It is unknown at this time if Peters will be playing the part in the Avengers sequel.

  • Steve Says: Man oh man, has the internet been ablaze about this one. Lots of “HE’S A X-MAN! HE CAN’T BE A AVENGER!” and vice-versa, as well as a bunch of optimistic individuals claiming that Marvel/Disney and Fox (owner of all X-Men movie rights) have come to an agreement and this will be a crossover. Well if you guys read anything I write, you’d know I already addressed that issue in this article. Since Quicksilver has been well associated to both franchises, his rights (along with Scarlet Witch’s) are shared between the two studios, but they must follow specific guidelines: Marvel can’t talk about mutants and his father Magneto, and Fox can’t talk about the Avengers or any of its members. Sorry to disappoint the crossover optimists, but that’s just the way it’s gotta be, unfortunately. Oh, and the timing? Fox is totally trolling Marvel Studios, who are totally trolling WB for putting a speedster in their movie before Flash. Trolls everywhere!

Blade Runner Sequel:

The sequel to the immensely popular Ridley Scott film Blade Runner is slowly but surely making its way to theaters. The script is currently going through a rewrite at the hands of Michael Green, and Scott is still signed on to direct. A release date has still yet to be confirmed.

  • Steve Says: Fans of Blade Runner rejoice! If I ever saw the first one I’d probably be excited, so since I didn’t, I’ll just pretend! Yay!

Expendables 3:

Fan-favorite action stars Jackie Chan, Nicolas Cage, and Wesley Snipes are in talks to join the ever growing cast to the Expendables franchise. While news has been quiet on Chan and Cage’s part, actor/director Sylvester Stallone tweeted that Snipes “cannot wait to get back on top again,” after confirming the return of Mickey Rourke . There is no word on the return of actors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis, but the release date is slated for 2014.

  • Steve Says: Jackie Chan?! Awesome! Wesley Snipes?! Amazing! Blade’s back! Nic Cage?! Only if he gets to go Cage Rage on the enemy! I’m ok with all of these guys coming to the third one, and you should be too. Now if only we could get Clint Eastwood in there… Get him before he dies, Stallone!

The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo & WWE:

After the announcement of a new Scooby-Doo film in the works in which the gang teams up with WWE superstars to solve a mystery at Wrestlemania, a new Flintstones film in the same vein will also see the light of day in 2015. The WWE Studios co-produced films will both be animated, and the Scooby-Doo film is slated for a 2014 spring release.

  • Steve Says: ...What...?

Grumpy Cat:

The popular internet meme Grumpy Cat is on its way to being “a big family comedy,” as the movie rights have just been purchased from the cat’s owner. While little is known about the project at this moment, producer Todd Garner (Jack and Jill, Paul Blart: Mall Cop) compared the film to Garfield, and confirmed that the cat will indeed speak in the film.

  • Steve Says: … I don’t wanna play anymore. Hope you’re happy, internet!

Guardians of the Galaxy:

Doctor Who star Karen Gillan has officially signed on to play the lead female villain in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy alongside actors Lee Pace and Michael Rooker, who are also signed on to play currently unnamed antagonists. In other casting news, six-time Academy Award nominee Glen Close has signed on to be in the film as an unnamed “major role.” Speculations constantly revolve around character Rhomann Dey, a leader of the Nova Corps. As if that was not enough, actor John C. Reily (Wreck-It Ralph, Stepbrothers) has also signed onto the film as a rumored S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.

  • Steve Says: Whaaaaaaaat?! I gotta say, this is by far the most intriguing cast in all the upcoming Marvel movies so far, and it’s quickly becoming my most anticipated. Glen Close? Karan Gillan? John C. Reily? The NOVA CORPS?! Dude, sign me up.

Ninja Turtles:

Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg has joined the cast of the Michael Bay produced Ninja Turtles film as character Burne Thompson. Thompson was known in the cartoon series as “not exactly a fan of the Turtles’ antics.”

  • Steve Says: The more big names, the more butts you get in the seat, I guess.

Pirates of the Carribean 5:

The upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean sequel has found its directors in Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg (Kon-Tiki). Filming is planned to being later this year for a July 2015 release.

  • Steve Says: I don’t know who these guys are, I’m not interested in another Pirates movie, and that’s all I gotta say about that.
