TM Movie News: Spider-Man's Eyes, Poltergeist, plenty more!

- by Steve Garcia, 11 March 2013

Alright, alright, alright Trash Mutant! Another installment of Movie News coming at you, so let’s do this thang! (if you want to… not gonna force you… but you should… just sayin’...)

Picture
Yes. Steve Garcia. Previously known as your buddy The Rajun Cajun!

The Amazing Spider-Man II:

The new costume for the highly anticipated sequel was revealed last week. The lenses from the teased picture on Marc Webb’s Twitter page were in fact Spider-Man’s new “eyes.” The eyes are much bigger this time, and the new costume looks almost entirely like the comic book version, unlike the previous film’s attempt. In more recent news, Chris Cooper (The Muppets, October Sky) has officially been casted as the villainous Norman Osborn. Whether or not his alter ego, the Green Goblin, is set to make an appearance next to the likes of Electro (played by Jamie Foxx) and Rhino (Paul Giamatti) has yet to be seen.

  • Steve Says: I’m in love with this new costume! Don’t get me wrong, I dug Peter’s look in the first Amazing Spider-Man (minus the yellow eyes), but nothing beats the classics, folks. Spidey’s looks is so iconic, and it’s great that Sony came to their senses and recognized it. Excellent stuff. Speaking of excellence, Chris Cooper is PERFECT casting for Norman Osborn. Maniacal laughs are to be had, and I’m totally ok with that. Still, I really hope that they save Green Goblin for the third movie, because there already looks like there’s way too much going on in this one. And Gobbie better be the one to kill Gwen Stacy (not spoilers because that happened a billion years ago in the comic books). Great stuffs!

Anchorman 2:

The story for Anchorman 2 will take place in New York City, rather than the previous film’s setting of San Diego. John C Reilly (Wreck-It Ralph), Meagan Good (Think like a Man), Dylan Baker (Trick ‘r Treat), and Harrison Ford have all joined the ever-growing cast.

  • Steve Says: MY BODY IS READY FOR THE COMEDY THAT IS GOING TO BE HAD.

Army of Darkness 2:

In a recent interview, Sam Raimi (Oz, the Great and Powerful) says that he and his brother Ted are working on the script for Evil Dead 4. In a separate interview, producer Rob Tapert went on to correct the director by saying that it will be a direct sequel to Army of Darkness, separating itself from the newly rebooted Evil Dead series. Actor Bruce Campbell has gone on record by saying that "I've heard this a thousand times, because in the back of his mind, [Raimi] never wants to let go, because he loved making these movies. We all loved making them together. They were a nightmare to make, very difficult, but they lasted the test of time, so he's not going to let that go, and I'm never going to say 'no.' It'll be me and a walker fighting some other old guy. But that's what he does and who knows? It may happen."

  • Steve Says: I was never a gigantic fan of the Army of Darkness stuff, admittedly, but I’ll watch it anyway, I guess. Evil Dead 4 is something that’s been talked about since forever, so it’s gotta be nice for the fans to finally hear something about it, right?

DC Comics:

Director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Rises) has apparently been made the head of creative control regarding all things WB/DC Comics-related. Much in the same way director Joss Whedon is the head of Marvel Studios and comic book creator Mark Millar’s involvement with the Fox Marvel films, this grants Nolan a final say in all things DC, including the new Man of Steel franchise, the impending Batman reboot, and the anticipated Justice League film.

  • Steve Says: I can dig it, but there was originally more to this story that (thankfully) was debunked. Apparently, because of Nolan’s promotion, WB wanted Christian Bale to come back as Batman in the Justice League. And that’s a terrible idea. The Nolan Batman movies were made specifically with the mindset that super powers didn’t exist (which is why Joker wasn’t bleached, Bane didn’t use Venom, and the Lazarus Pit wasn’t around). Any way you slice it, a world with Superman, Flash, or Wonder Woman wouldn’t make sense in the Nolan Bat-Universe, so yeah, bad idea. Still though, I think Nolan’s way of storytelling is just what WB/DC needs to differentiate themselves from the Avengers and Marvel/Disney. Realism vs. Fantasy at its finest.

The Hobbit: There and Back Again:

The third film in The Hobbit trilogy has been pushed back to December of 2014, rather than the summer, as originally planned.

  • Steve Says: Damn, already focusing on the third movie? Ya know, there’s a whole sequel in the middle of that, guys. Anyway, sorry Hobbit fans… or not… Truth told, I was never interested in the Lord of the Rings stuff, so I have no idea if this is good news or bad. So… Next story!

Hulk:

The popular comic book storyline, Planet Hulk, was speculated to be Marvel/Disney’s big plan for their “Phase Three,” but both Joss Whedon and Mark Ruffalo (The Avengers) shot it down in recent interviews. Ruffalo also said that the next time audiences will see the Hulk is in The Avengers sequel.

  • Steve Says: Aw, no Planet Hulk? Huge bummer. I really hope to see more Hulk in the future, though. He’s a great character and I was a gigantic fan of The Incredible Hulk. Ya know, the one with Edward Norton.

Kick-Ass 2:

The sequel been pushed from June of this year to August.

  • Steve Says: No biggie. It’s only two months. Actually, it’s a really smart move on the studio’s part. Man of Steel is going to be a sure hit (which is also gonna be released in June), and the first Kick-Ass didn’t exactly do so hot in the theaters. Less competition is a good thing for this movie. Good news, and I’m sure it’ll be worth the short wait.

Man of Steel:

Warner Bros. screened the film for the cast, crew, friends, producers, etc. of Man of Steel and they are calling it “the best movie of the year.” Early reviews are stating that the action in the film is intense, and how the trailers purposely have been holding back on it. Someone has gone on record by saying “Imagine a Nolan story with Snyder effects/action,” and “it's not nearly as dour and serious as the trailers suggest.” A third and final trailer is reportedly going to be released next month.

  • Steve Says: FREEZE ME TILL JUNE. NEED TO SEE MOVIE NOW. Oh, and the whole “best movie of the year” thing is interesting. Of course the WB executive's are gonna say something like it being "the best movie of the year," but they weren't nearly as confident as they were when Green Lantern had its first screenings. If I remember correctly, they asked that all reviews be held until the release date (which is almost never a good sign). So yeah, Superman’s gonna be awesome. Suck it, non-believers!

National Lampoon’s Vacation Sequel:

The next sequel to the comedic franchise has officially started shooting. Ed Helms (The Hangover) will be starring as the film’s main character, Rusty Griswold.

  • Steve Says: Yaaaaaaaaawn. Seriously, I don’t understand why they’d continue this franchise. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the original films (Christmas Vacation’s my personal favorite), but… I dunno. Maybe a trailer will get me excited.

Poltergeist:

The classic horror film is reportedly being remade. It will be directed by Gil Kenan (Monster House).

  • Steve Says: … Ya know what? Screw it. Current horror movies (with the huge exception of Cabin in the Woods) suck. If Evil Dead and Carrie are getting awesome remakes this year, who am I to dismiss a Poltergeist one? Go for it, guys. Let’s wait and see.

Star Wars: Episode VII:

Carrie Fisher has reportedly confirmed to return as Princess Leia in the 2015 sequel. In a nice little nugget of an interview, George Lucas stated that “we had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison—or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation.”

  • Steve Says: Way to drop the ball, Lucas. Anyway, yeah, great news. Kinda figured that the gang would be back when that Harrison Ford stuff was talked about a few weeks ago, so I can’t say I’m surprised. Bring it on, dudes!

STUFF YOU SHOULD LOOK AT:

The Conjuring:

A trailer was released for a new horror movie that was based on a true story or something. Anyway, looks decent. If you’re afraid of clapping and basements, look at it!

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2:

A new trailer was released for the sequel to that movie that was based on a book. Look at it if you want to, but nobody will blame you if you don’t. Food puns all up in here. Look at it (or not)!

Iron Man 3:

Anyone who’s anyone saw the spectacular new Iron Man 3 trailer. But if you haven’t (and I doubt you haven’t), check it out right the frack now! I’m not spoiling a damn thing! Look at it!

And that’s that! What do you think of this week’s news, righteous readers? Do you like Spider-Man’s new look? Stoked about the Anchorman 2 and Star Wars cast? How do you feel about Nolan’s supposed new position at WB? Who wants to freeze with me to wait for Superman? Also, watch that Iron Man trailer! Thanks for reading, as always. Be good to one another!
