TM Movie News: Spiders, Turtles, Apes, Comedies & Sequels

- by Steve Garcia, 21 April 2014

Happy Monday, Trash Muties! Huge couple of weeks, so I got a lot of goodies for ya! We got Spider-Man! Will Farrell and John C. Reily! The Ninja Turtles! Spider-Man! He-Man! Mrs. Doubtfire! Spider-Man! The X-Men! Gambit! Superior! And much, much more! Did I mention we have Spider-Man? Because we got a lot of Spider-Man… ANYWHO! It’s Movie News time!

Picture

The Amazing Spider-Man Universe:

  • Sony’s getting these Spidey movies on a tight and serious schedule, as the upcoming Sinister Six movie has found its director in Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods). On the subject of that particular movie, it’ll supposedly be “a tale of redemption,” according to producer Avi Arad, who has been attached to these superhero films for almost 15 years.
  • Will Spider-Man be crossing over with the X-Men? Nope! Supposedly, the post-credits scene for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a scene straight out of X-Men: Days of Future Past. But that doesn’t mean Spidey will be swinging alongside Wolverine anytime soon, folks. The reason for the cross-promotion is because director Mark Webb apparently has some unfinished business with the guys at Fox, so he agreed to promote a Fox movie in the Sony film.
  • But what about the Avengers? Well, Avi Arad didn’t totally rule out a potential crossover with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but don’t hold your breath, Muties. Here’s his official statement on the subject:
  • “I think it will take a moment in which we’ve run out of ideas. There's so much to tell about Spider-Man. There's so much to tell about the Sinister Six. The relationship between Spider-Man and Venom will bring a whole other world in. Peter Parker is unique; he's really different. He's not an Avenger. He's not an X-Man. He's unique and we revere that. And we'd rather work really hard to have the right ideas than – you know in the toy business we used to make toys glow in the dark when they weren't selling well and it gave at least another Christmas. We don't need it yet.”
  • Lastly, in other Spider-News, the official website for the upcoming sequel teased both Venom and Carnage with a Daily Bugle article entitled “KILLER KASADY CAUGHT” by Eddie Brock! Here’s that complete article:
KILLER KASADY CAUGHT

By Eddie Brock

The greater New York tri-state area got a whole lot safer yesterday.  Captured late last night, Cletus Kasady, escaped serial killer and notorious redhead, was eerily calm and subdued when he eagerly surrendered to the FBI. The manhunt for the FBI’s Most Wanted felon ended innocuously in a small strip mall outside of New Rochelle, New York.

A barista at a local coffee shop recognized Kasady and eventually called the police.  The barista apologized to reporters later admitting she didn’t immediately alert authorities hoping Spider-Man would beat them to the scene.  “What can I say?  I am a HUGE fan.”

Kasady had been sentenced to twelve life sentences for the twelve murders he committed — but escaped while being transported between federal prisons. Sources say Kasady has been remanded to Ravencroft Institute for further interrogation until he is relocated to a maximum security federal prison. While the barista didn’t get her wish, we know Spider-Man thanks her… as we all do. For now it appears that Kasady won’t be causing any more carnage.

  • Whew! Might as well change this segment to Spidey-Man Movie News! Both the Sinister Six and Venom movies are expected to be released before The Amazing Spider-Man 4, which is more than likely going to change its current release date because it’s so far away from now. So until then, get ready for a billion more news reports on the franchise!

Border Guards:

  • Comedic geniuses Will Farrell, John C. Reilly and director Adam McKay will once again be joining forces to bring us the upcoming Border Guards! From the guys over at Deadline, the film is about “two hapless but earnest friends who decide to give purpose to their lives by protecting America’s borders from illegal immigrants. In the process they find themselves accidentally stranded in Mexico without identification and must sneak back into the USA.”  Get pumped!

Friday the 13th:

  • Jason’s coming back! …Again! Director David Bruckner (V/H/S) is in negotiations to helm the project, the release date is set for March 13, 2015 (yep, it’s a Friday!), and Michael Bay will be on board as a producer. Supposedly the element of found footage (like Paranormal Activity, Chronicle, etc.) may or may not be a new element in the upcoming reboot, and if that’s true, Bruckner’s got this in the bag. Let’s see what happens with this one!

Ghostbusters 3:

  • Remember how I told you guys a few weeks ago that The Lego Movie directors were in talks to direct the fabled Ghost Busters sequel? Well, they did, and they said no. And that’s awesome. Next story!

The Hobbit 3:

  • The last installment of the Hobbit franchise may be changing its subtitle from The Hobbit: There and Back Again to The Hobbit: Into the Fire based on the fact that a “reliable source” told Hobbit fan site TheOneRing.net that New Line registered that domain name. So… Yeah. Next story!

Masters of the Universe:

  • Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow has signed a deal to give the current script a rewrite. But that’s not all, folks! Supposedly, Wadlow is on the shortlist to direct the upcoming movie as well, so do we got a match, here? I don’t know! WHAT’S GOIN’ ON?!

Mrs. Doubtfire Sequel:

  • No, ladies and gents, you read that right! A sequel to Mrs. Doubtfire is in the works, and both director Chirs Columbus and Robin Williams are interested in returning! Why? Who cares! Embrace it!

Star Wars Episode VII:

  • The beloved Wookie Chewbacca is officially set to return! And that’s not all, ladies and gents, because according to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney and Abrams are looking to build and recreate the planet of Tatooine, which is famously known as the home to Luke and Anakin Skywalker. While the casting may not totally be complete at this time, filming is still happening right now, at this very moment! It’s happening!

Superior:

  • I think it’s safe to assume that anything writer Mark Millar creates can and will be made into a movie. Fox just bought the rights to Superior, which is essentially a different take of DC’s Captain Marvel. Hey, if this is the closest thing we’ll ever get to that, I’m all for it! Director Mathew Vaughn is set to produce, and a release date hasn’t been determined yet. Either way, bring on Superior!

Wreck-It Ralph 2:

  • You read that right! According to composer Henry Jackman, a sequel to the Turbo-tastic Disney flick is on the horizon, as the script is currently being written. Can’t wait to hear more!

X-Men Universe:

  • Sony’s not the only studio with a beloved comic book franchise! Producer of X-Men: Days of Future Past, Lauren Shuler Donner, claims that the possibilities of solo-spinoff films for select X-Men characters are endless, and that some of them may actually be happening. On this list for a while now is Deadpool, but recent additions include Gambit and Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique as well. Channing Tatum has come out and said that he has been talking to studio heads about being Gambit, so… we have that, I guess. The next X-movie, X-Men: Apocalypse may or may not feature a young Gambit and Nightcrawler according to director Bryan Singer, but are these aforementioned spinoffs necessary? Is this something that the people are really demanding? We’ll see when it comes!
