TM Movie News: Star Wars, Batman, Bourne & More!

- by Steve Garcia, 8 February 2016

Happy Monday, my lovely Muties! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Picture

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea:

  • Fox has officially picked up Bryan Singer’s upcoming adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea! A few months ago, the X-Men director posted a picture of the script on his Instagram, and will likely begin shooting later this year after production begins in the fall. It’s a good move for him, as even the best directors need to catch a break with their big superhero franchises (like when Christopher Nolan juggles original films between his Batman movies). Looking forward to it!

Assassin’s Creed:

  • It’s no secret that video game movies always suck. Hopefully, this trend will break this year, when Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Steve Jobs) pulls down the hood and gets all stabby in the big screen adaptation. A few pictures have only been published online, but everything has been pretty quiet about it. Finally, Fassbender himself spoke to Empire about bringing the game to life, and it actually sounds pretty great:
  • “I’ve always thought about The Matrix when we’ve approached this. This idea of DNA memory elevates it from a basic fantasy genre [piece], because you have something an audience can actually believe in. Then the journey becomes so much more elevated, because you’re on board in a different way. We’re not trying to make it too crazy violent, although obviously there is an element of that, but what is really cool is that our action sequences are on real sets and real locations.”
  • Assassin’s Creed hits theaters on December 21, 2016.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens:

  • Episode VII has crossed the $2 Billion mark! As of Sunday, The Force Awakens has officially become the third film in history to achieve this claim, and will more than likely beat Titanic’s box office record of $2.19 Billion before its theatrical run is over. Although it doesn’t appear that it will reach Avatar’s $2.7 Billion record, I don’t think Disney is disappointed in the slightest. Disney Chairman Alan Horn spoke on Star Wars’s latest achievement:
  • “This is a historic moment for Star Wars, for Lucasfilm, and for Disney, and all of us here are extremely gratified to be a part of this journey with fans around the world who have made Star Wars: The Force Awakens such an extraordinary success…The film’s achievements are truly astounding, and it’s our great honor to relaunch this cinematic galaxy not only for all the devoted decades-long fans but for a new generation who will keep the Star Wars legacy alive for many years to come.”
