TM Movie News: Star Wars, X-Men and Zombies

- by The Rajun Cajun, 12 November 2012

Hey Trash Mutant! Here’s another Movie News segment just for you!

Picture

  • As usual, let’s start off with the comic book news. Electro really might be the villain in Amazing Spider-Man 2. Electro is one of Spider-Man’s oldest villains, but he was never really a huge threat in any media (including comics). Typically, he worked alone, but the fact that Sony is trying something new with a new villain is good news. Jamie Foxx is rumored to be playing the character as well. Foxx is a fantastic actor, but I’m not sure that he’s ever played a villain. He’s good enough to adapt the role and make the character really pop out to the general audience, so I’m confident that he’ll do a good job if it’s confirmed.

  • Bryan Singer is officially directing Days of Future Past. He had previously directed the first X-Men, which was pretty good, and it's sequel, X2, was great. Days of Future Past seems like a story that’s right up his alley, so this could potentially be good news. Worst case scenario: we get something like Superman Returns (which he also directed), but I really don’t think that this will be the case. He seems to know what he’s doing with the X-Men franchise, so I wish him the best of luck.

  • Speaking of X-Men, a new teaser poster was released for The Wolverine, so take a look at that:

  • There’s a Q & A with Hugh Jackman about the movie, so that’s pretty interesting, and you can look at that here.

  • Of course, the biggest news of this week is that Disney bought Lucasfilm, which owns Indiana Jones and Star Wars, for $4.05 billion. Star Wars is much more important to this particular story, so my apologies, Indy fans. In Disney’s press release, they confirmed that Episode VII is in pre-production, and will be released in 2015. They have also confirmed that Episodes VIII and IX are also on the way, as well as other Star Wars movies too. Old Republic movie? Boba Fett? Yes. These films are all possible. The writer of Episode VII is confirmed to be Michael Arndt, who wrote Toy Story 3. The money that Lucas got from the buy will be donated to education and charity. That’s fantastic, Mr. Lucas. Good on you.

The purchase is epic news, and let me tell you why: Disney is a major corporation that wouldn’t spend $4 million to run a franchise as huge as Star Wars into the ground. Lucas, even if he created the franchise, has lost his touch as a director and writer. Have we forgotten the prequels and their awfulness? He both wrote and directed those disasters. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back was a Star Wars movie neither written nor directed by Lucas, and it was good enough to get many praised reviews and a score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. This purchase will also make Star Wars much more accessible to the kids. Boys, who Disney never really had a market for until their purchase of Marvel Entertainment in 2009, will get to know characters like Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and Han Solo. Girls, on the other hand, just got a new Disney Princess in Princess Leia. As an uncle with a niece, I know that any product with the Disney Princesses on it is an instant buy for a little girl. When they see Leia standing next to Sleeping Beauty or Cinderella, they’ll be prompted to ask questions and, if the plan goes right, begin to delve into the Star Wars mythos. Bottom line, the purchase was an incredibly smart move, and die-hard fans have nothing to worry about. Was Mickey Mouse in the Avengers? No. So don’t worry, my friends.

  • In smaller news, here’s some ironic stuff: because of Hurricane Sandy, the production of the new Noah’s Ark movie was delayed. A movie about a flood was delayed because of a flood, and that’s pretty hysterical.

  • Michael Bay also confirmed that Mark Walberg will be the new main character in the next Transformers movie. Good for him?

  • The trailer for World War Z is out, and looks pretty awesome. Take a look at that:

  • There’s another trailer out for a movie called Warm Bodies. It’s another zombie movie, and well… ok. The premise is that a Zombie guy falls in love with a human. I know how it sounds (Twilight), but give it a chance. It actually looks pretty funny:

  • The trailer for the 3D re-release is out for Jurassic Park. Cool:

  • There’s some Hangover 3 photos out and it looks like there’s going to be a funeral and a whacky robbery:

And that’s that! Do you like Jamie Foxx as the potential Electro? Which trailer was your favorite? Will the new direction choice with "Days of Future Past" affect your watching it? Most importantly, how do you feel about the Disney/Star Wars move? Until next time, TM. RC out.
