TM Movie News: The 50th Movie News Spectacular!

- by Steve Garcia, 16 June 2014

Happy Monday, Trash Muties! Lots of rumors and claims in the past few days, but fear not! I know what’s what, who’s who, and just about every little thing in between! Sonic the Hedgehog is getting his own movie? What’s the deal with Khal Drogo and Aquaman? Do we have a clean-cut schedule for the future of DC superhero movies? Who are the Nice Guys?! Sit back and relax, my righteous readers: it’s the 50th Movie News article spectacular!

Picture

Beauty and the Beast:

  • With the success of Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent before it, Disney will be continuing the trend of live-action remakes with the newly announced Beauty and the Beast. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn and Dreamgirls director Bill Condon is attached to the project and its release date will likely follow Disney’s other live-action projects, Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella and Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book.
  • In the same vein, Warner Brothers is also developing a Beauty and the Beast film of their own! Guillermo del Toro has been attached to direct this particular adaptation for some time, however he recently stepped down because of accursed scheduling conflicts. Fortunately for the studio, however, he will still be involved as producer and screenwriter. Emma Watson is set to star, and its release date is presently unknown.

Captain Nemo:

  • “Smallville” creators Miles Millar and Alfred Cough have sold a screenplay to Columbia Pictures that tells a new tale of the fictitious Captain Nemo from Jules Verne’s novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Disney’s Maleficent producers Joe Roth and Palak Patel will be involved with this project, and they are currently in preproduction for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland sequel, Through the Looking Glass (slated for May 27, 2016). Speaking of Disney, they too have a Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea film in development, but it has been seemingly dead since David Fincher stepped down from the project almost a year ago.

DC Cinematic Universe:

  • Reputable blogger and Hollywood insider Nikki Finke claims that at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, DC Comics and WB will unveil their game plan for the DC Cinematic Universe. Starting with 2013’s Man of Steel and followed by the upcoming Superman V Batman: Dawn of Justice in May 2016, Finke’s report says that it will be joined by a Captain Marvel (Shazam!) solo-film and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Sandman in 2016, Zack Snyder’s Justice League and a Wonder Woman film in 2017, and finally a Flash/Green Lantern team-up film and a Man of Steel sequel in 2018.
  • But that’s not all, folks! She also said that along Henry Cavill’s Superman, Ben Affleck’s Batman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg, other Justice League members set to appear in Batman V Superman include Flash and Green Lantern, the latter specifically not being played by Ryan Reynolds. On top of that, she claimed that Aquaman will make his debut in Justice League, which contradicts previous rumors that the character will appear in Superman V Batman. Assuming this is all true (and as of right now, I’m not buying a word of it!), this would mean that WB will be pumping two to three movies per year to compete with Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. Whether this report speaks the truth or not, I think I’ll speak for everyone when I say that this year’s SDCC will be quite the memorable one regardless!

DreamWorks Animation:

  • With How to Train Your Dragon 2 just hitting theaters last weekend, DreamWorks has announced the following release dates to a slew of their upcoming animated films, courtesy of ComingSoon.net:
  • Boss Baby- March 18, 2016
  • Captain Underpants- January 13, 2017
  • Monkeys of Mumbai- March 10, 2017
  • The Croods 2- November 3, 2017
  • Larrikins- February 16, 2018
  • Madagascar 4- May 18, 2018
  • Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves- November 2, 2018

Justice League:

  • According to a “reliable source” at Hitflix, “Game of Thrones” actor Jason Mamoa will indeed be playing Aquaman in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The actor will supposedly be in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, as he met with Snyder last year for a reading. Mamoa has gone on record denying this claim as recent as last month according to IGN, but everyone and their mothers are convinced that this is the real deal.
  • In other Justice League news, The Wrap’s own Jeff Sneider tweeted that the characters Martian Manhunter, Max Lord, and Darkseid will be in the film as well according to an agency grid. Of course this is a huge rumor on its own, but should be noted that in a recent interview, Man of Steel and Superman V Batman writer David Goyer was quick to dismiss that Martian Manhunter specifically wouldn’t work for the movies, right before he called Marvel’s She-Hulk a big green porn star… But is Sneider legit? Check out the tweet below:

Magic: The Gathering:

  • The Magic movie is still alive and well, as “Game of Thrones” writer and producer Bryan Cogman has reportedly been approached by 20th Century Fox to write the script. Magic: The Gathering will be a film based on the popular fantasy card game of the same name, and will be produced by Hasbro and X-Men: Days of Future Past producer Simon Kinberg.

The Nice Guys:

  • Iron Man 3 and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang director Shane Black’s next project, The Nice Guys, may have found its leading men in Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling! Why is that exciting? Check out a synopsis courtesy of TheWrap and I’ll let you be the judge:
  • Set in smoggy 1970s Los Angeles, story follows Jackson Healy (muscle-for-hire, recovering alcoholic) and Holland March (private eye, practicing alcoholic), who are brought together by the suicide of a fading porn star. However, the dead girl's aunt is convinced she saw her niece alive and well after the highly publicized incident. March needs money, takes the case, and within days, it's blossomed into a far-reaching murder conspiracy, bizarrely rooted in smog and the U.S. auto industry.

Sonic the Hedgehog:

  • Sony Pictures has officially announced that Sega’s mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, will be getting his very own feature film! According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will be a combination of CGI and live-action, the malicious Dr. Eggman will of course be the film’s big bad guy, and 22 Jump Street producer Neil Moritz will be producing. In a world where Sly Cooper and Ratchet and Clank movies are going to exist, it’s only right that they’re joined by the king of badass cartoon animal video game protagonists. Gotta go fast!

STUFF YOU SHOULD LOOK AT:

Birdman:

  • Michael Keaton is Birdman! And Emma Stone, Edward Norton, and Naomi Watts are in it too! LOOK AT IT!

  • Is Denzel Washington pulling a Liam Neeson?! So much ass-kicking! LOOK AT IT!

The Interview:

  • Seth Rogan and James Franco doing beautiful things together! LOOK AT IT!

Do you buy the supposed list of upcoming DC movies? Share your feelings and hopes in the comments below! A very special thank you to the loyal readers who make doing what I do all worth it on this 50th edition of Movie News! As always, I love you all and be good to one another!
