TM Movie News: The Post-SDCC Edition!

- by Steve Garcia, 28 July 2014

Happy Monday, Trash Muties! San Diego Comic Con has came and went, and boy was it a celebration of nerd film! Wonder Woman has finally been revealed for Batman v Superman! The Avengers got absolutely thrashed by Ultron! King Kong is returning to the big screen! Tusk and Horns are indeed two very different movies! Read ‘em and weep, ladies and germs: IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME! POST-SDCC 2014 EDITION!

Ant-Man:

  • Comic Con blessed us with a ton of casting and plot news, so let’s kick off with the nitty gritty of it! Corey Stoll (House of Cards) will be playing Yellowjacket, the film’s villain. Evangeline Lilly (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) will be playing the role of Hank Pym’s daughter Hope Van Dyne and the superhero known as Wasp. According to Deadline, Patrick Wilson (Insidious) has backed out of the film due to scheduling conflicts, while actors Matt Gerard and Kevin Weisman will no longer be in the film because their characters have apparently been written out entirely.  Here’s the panel! (Sadly, no footage):

  • Ant-Man will reportedly be a heist film in which Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) mentors Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) as the new Ant-Man, a superhero whose powers include shrinking in size and communicating with insects. According to Douglas himself, Pym’s business partner (played by Corey Stoll) has taken their company in an evil direction, and it’s up to Ant-Man to bring it down. Ant-Man begins filming mid August, and is slated for July 17, 2015.

Avengers: Age of Ultron:

  • The Avengers assembled at SDCC and they brought a teaser trailer with them! Here’s a description of it, courtesy of ScreenRant:
  • “The trailer began with the familiar heroes (including War Machine) dressed in casual all hanging out at Avengers Tower and attempting to lift Thor’s hammer… without much success. Only Captain America is able to move it (slightly) and Thor’s concerned facial expression is priceless until he smiles when Rogers gives up. The exercise is interrupted by the appearance of Ultron, in a broken down, almost skeletal form with silver armor plating haphazardly forming his upper hunched torso. He proclaims, ‘There’s only one path to peace: your extinction.’ The heroes all stand up facing him and Thor picks up his hammer.”
  • “This opening was followed by a montage of action shots of selected quotes from the movie, including Tony Stark saying that what happens in the movie is ‘the end of the path I started us on.’ The trailer then offered a first look at the movie’s version of the Hulkbuster armor in action in multiple scenes, and Ultron delivered the excellent line ‘There are no strings on me.’ The trailer concluded with Tony standing in a wasteland with the rest of the Avengers lying on the ground looking a lot worse for wear. Captain America’s shield was broken in half. They were seemingly dead.”
  • Here’s the panel:

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice:

  • The teaser trailer for Zack Snyder’s Superman v Batman: Dawn of Justice debuted Saturday morning at SDCC. Of course it managed to find its way online later that evening, but the bad men took all traces of video away… But fear not, my righteous readers! I got to see it, and I’ll report exactly what I saw:
  • The trailer starts off on a Gotham City rooftop on a stormy night. Ben Affleck’s Batman, who is wearing the clunky armor from Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns” (complete with white lenses), uncovers a tarp from the bat-signal. In the signal’s light, Henry Cavill’s Superman descends from the night sky. His eyes are bright and red with heat vision. It cuts back to Batman, whose looking right back at him. It fades to black, with the logo onscreen.
  • Not much else was revealed about the film, the upcoming Justice League, or anything else regarding other DC Comics characters getting their own films, but actor Scoot McNairy (Argo) confirmed that he is indeed playing a secret role in the film, and that he has been hitting the gym. WHO ARE YOU SCOOT?!

Dr. Strange:

  • Even at Comic Con, rumors continue to pop up regarding Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme. In a recent article published by TheWrap, they claimed that not only were Tom Hardy, Jared Leto, and Benedict Cumberbatch up for the role,  but Marvel has also been eying the three-time Oscar contender Joaquin Phoenix! Earlier this year, Phoenix was also rumored to be playing Lex Luthor in WB’s Batman v Superman before Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) was announced for the role. Cumberbatch recently brought up the possibility of playing the good doctor, but didn’t sound so confident. Check out what he said:
  • “As far as I’m aware, even if that was the case, it couldn’t work out because I’m doing a little play called ‘Hamlet’ in London. So I don’t think I could even if that was in the cards. It sounds like a fantastic project. It’s a shame if I miss out, but who knows?”

Godzilla 2:

  • Legendary Pictures was proud to announce that not only will the Godzilla sequel be directed by Gareth Edwards once again, but teased the classic monsters Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidora will all be featured at some point during this new franchise! A teaser was shown, and thanks to the guys at ComingSoon.net, we know just what they showed:
  • "They showed a bunch of old newsreel footage similar to the opening credits but it was interspersed with the tag: ‘There is still one secret that remains hidden,’ ‘There are others.’ And then we see a shadow of what's clearly Rodan with the words ‘Codename: Rodan.’  Then they show the old Mothra with the title ‘Codename: Mothra,’ and lastly.... ‘Codename: Ghidorah! Monarch Assessment: Conflict Imminent.’ Followed by the words ‘LET THEM FIGHT’"

Guardians of the Galaxy 2:

  • Even if we didn’t get any concrete Dr. Strange news at SDCC, Marvel graced us with confirmation that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will be coming to a theater near you on July 28, 2017! James Gunn will be back to direct and write, and if the early reviews for Guardians of the Galaxy are any indication, this is the greatest news we could have ever hoped for!

Skull Island:

  • The giant monster genre looks to be back in full swing, as Legendary Pictures also announced at SDCC that a King Kong origin film, Skull Island, is in production! The film will be released on November 4, 2016. Nothing other than those details was announced, but speculators believe that this might just lead to an inevitable super-sized crossover between King Kong and Godzilla. Stay tuned!
