TM Movie News: The Rock, Goonies, the MCU and more!

- by Steve Garcia, 7 April 2014

Happy Monday, Trash Muties! I got lots of goodies for you! Which DC character is the Rock on lock to play? Are they really making a Goonies sequel? Which 80’s movie is being rebooted this week? What’s in store for the future of Marvel movies, and who just got casted in that Batman/Superman movie?! Sit back and relax, kiddies: it’s Movie News time!

Picture

Ant-Man:

  • That Ant-Man movie just keeps getting bigger and bigger, ladies and gentlemen! Lord of the Rings star Evangeline Lilly and House of Cards’s Corey Stoll will co-star alongside Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, and Patrick Wilson in the upcoming Marvel feature. And that’s not all, folks! Actor Matt Gerald has officially joined the cast as an unspecified villain, and while you might not know him by name, you’ll certainly recognize him as Ben Kingsley’s cellmate in the Marvel One-Shot: All Hail the King! It hasn’t been stated whether or not he will be playing the same character from the one-shot, but I wouldn’t rule it out entirely, because in the books, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) served some prison time. While Rudd and Douglas’s roles are the only ones that are official (Scott Lang and Hank Pym, respectively), Wilson is believed to be a young Hank Pym, Lilly as Janet Van Dyne, aka Wasp (Pym’s love interest in the comics), and Stoll as Eric O’Grady (the third Ant-Man). Very exciting stuff!

Black Adam, Green Lantern, or Lobo:

  • Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has supposedly made an agreement to star in an upcoming DC superhero film, but has been very tight-lipped on just which hero (or villain!) he’ll be playing. In a recent interview with IGN, he revealed the three qualities of the character he is set to play:
  • “Here are three qualities. The first quality we were looking for was that he had to be extremely complex and have a lot going on. What that does for me as an actor and the studio is it gives us space that we can explore; his complexities. The other quality was that he had to -- the character we were looking for had to be well-known but never brought to life. Then what that does again as an actor, it gives me a little bit of space, and we talked about personality. It just gives me a chance to put an imprint into his personality, with the set of tools that I could bring to the table and put a very unique twist on his personality, but still pay homage to who he is. The third thing -- and most important -- is he had to be a badass motherfucker, okay, and on a Superman level of power, where could throw down. In those three qualities, I'm happy we've found that character. Right now, we're out to a lot of writers.”
  • While many speculate that it could be Green Lantern or Lobo, Johnson let his audience aware that the Captain Marvel villain Black Adam is also a strong contender in the tweet below. But in other Green Lantern news, Man of Steel scribe David Goyer has expressed recent interest in a reboot to that franchise. Whoever he’ll end up playing, he’ll be a damn fine addition to the DC Cinematic Universe, that’s for sure!

Cheech & Chong:

  • The original stoner duo is set to return, my lovely muties! In a recent interview with CelebStoner.com, Tommy Chong announced that there is a new film in the works, and it will be written and directed by Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers). Here’s a taste of what we can expect, according to Chong himself:
  • “[Chandrasekhar] is working a script right now for us. We've had some preliminary meetings. It looks really good. It looks really funny. It's about us going to a festival called the Burning Joint. All sorts of shenanigans happen. It's going to be a lot of fun."

Fantastic Four:

  • The Fantastic Four reboot pushes forward, as we now officially have our new Doctor Doom! Actor Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) will be our eternally badass Latverian dictator. Alright! At least it’s not a woman like those previous rumors would suggest, so… awesome? Sure, let’s go with that!

Fast & Furious 7:

  • A report by The New York Daily News confirmed that the late Paul Walker’s final scenes in the upcoming Fast 7 will involve CGI. Supposedly, four actors with Walker’s physique and movements have been hired as a base, and his face and voice will be added in during post-production to give the character a proper sendoff in the huge franchise. Cool and creepy? Yes and yes.

Goonies Sequel:

  • This week, when legendary director Richard Donner was asked if he would be interested in doing a new comic book movie, he put it on full blast that a sequel to The Goonies is happening, and that he “will bet [his] children on it.” Unnecessary? Probably. But who cares?! GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE!

Man of Steel Sequel:

  • The Batman/Superman movie continues to get bigger, as we finally have some non-rumored, cold, hard casting announcements! Actors Holly Hunter (The Incredibles), Tao Okamoto (The Wolverine), and Callan Mulvey (300: Rise of an Empire) have all joined the soon-to-be blockbuster as supposedly new characters. It’s not much, but hey, we’ll take it! Daily Planet employees? GCPD? Your guess is as good as mine!

Marvel Cinematic Universe:

  • While things are hot and happening in regards to those Marvel movies right now, what can we expect for the future of the Avengers? In a recent interview, Captain America himself, Chris Evans, stated that not only will he hang up the shield once his contract is up, but he plans to stop from acting for a little while and to pursue his dream of becoming a director. Here’s his official quote:
  • “The problem was initially, it was a nine-movie contract. And they said if these movies take off and do very well, and my life changes and I don’t respond well, I don’t have the opportunity to say, listen, I need a fucking break. That just scared me. If I’m acting at all, it’s going to be under Marvel contract, or I’m going to be directing. I can’t see myself pursuing acting strictly outside of what I’m contractually obligated to do. I’ve known for a while I wanted to direct. But [time] never really opens up. There’s another movie to do, there’s another acting job. It just got to a point where I was like, you know what — I have to do this.”
  • And it looks like Evans isn’t alone, as Robert Downey Jr. also put in his two cents about his future as Tony Stark:
  • “You have to look at everybody’s age. I’ll put myself at the top of the list. Sooner or later, they’ve got to start over and get somebody young.”
  • But can you really blame them, folks? A nine-picture contract like Evans signed is an extremely daunting task, especially when you have to constantly keep in shape and have to stay away from your passions until the deal is up. Robert Downey Jr. is almost 50, and I’m sure that their co-star, Scarlet Johansson (who is currently five months pregnant and is shooting Avengers: Age of Ultron at the same time), is in the same boat as those two. While I think Marvel Studios should take this opportunity to breathe life into these franchises with new actors playing new roles (i.e. an Avengers team that consists of Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, Paul Bettany’s Vision, and Jamie Alexander’s Sif), the “Bond approach” is a popular term brought up by a variety of the guys at the studio. Will they continue the Iron Man story with a new Tony Stark, or will they give the mantle to War Machine? According to Kevin Feige himself, they’ve already mapped out movies as far away as 2028, so they’ve obviously got something cooking. We’ll see, folks!

Pee-Wee Herman:

  • Director Judd Apatow (40-Year-Old Virgin) has been working on a script for an all-new Pee-Wee Herman film that he said is “close to getting that going.” …And that’s it! Next story!

Police Academy:

  • New Line Cinema is looking to reboot the classic 80’s franchise, and Indiewire claims that comedic geniuses Key & Peele are heavily involved. And suddenly, the reboot is watchable! Movie magic!

Prometheus 2:

  • The Prometheus story will continue, and you can catch it in theaters on March 4, 2016! Oh, and they also got Green Lantern co-writer Michael Green rewriting its script. So… Let’s proceed with caution!

Scarface:

  • Remember a while back when I told you guys they were working on a Scarface remake? Well, it’s still happening, and they just got a director! Pablo Larrain (No) will be behind the camera for the upcoming film, and this time, the movie will tell the story about a Mexican immigrant set in modern-day Los Angeles. This will be the third time the Scarface story will be told, and to keep with the tradition, the main character’s name will be Tony (although he will not have the last names of his predecessors, Camonte and Montana). While no casting announcements have been made, producers have expressed interest in casting an unknown for the lead role. Color me interested!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:

  • Even if the Michael Bay-produced Ninja Turtles movie is only a few months away from theaters, changes in the cast are still happening. First reported by Deadline, Jackass’s Johnny Knoxville will be the new voice for the lead-turtle Leonardo, and Tony Shalhoub (Monk) will be our new Master Splinter. Will these changes matter? I don’t know! Next story!

Terminator: Genesis:

  • The Terminator reboot/sequel is still happening, folks, and Arnold himself had some words about it! Check out how he plans to come back this time, despite the fact that he’s older and that machines shouldn’t age:
  • ”The way that the character is written, it's a machine underneath. It's this metal skeleton. But above that is human flesh. And the Terminator's flesh ages, just like any other human being's flesh. Maybe not as fast. But it definitely ages. Terminator deals a lot with time travel, so there will be a younger T-800. And then what that model does later on when it gets reprogrammed, and who gets a hold of him. So it will be all kinds of interesting twists in the movie, but I feel so good.”

Have a week and be good to one another!
