Trash Mutant Movie News, 08.08.12

- by The Rajun Cajun, 8 August 2012

Greetings, Trash Mutant! It’s been a while, and I’ve come back with what I hope will be a recurring feature! Movie news!!! That’s right, I’ll be here to hold your hand and tell you all the good things and bad things that Hollywood’s gonna bring you. Prequels! Sequels! Good decisions! Bad decisions! We’re gonna look at them all right here! Let the fun begin!

Picture

  • Let’s start it off with the big stuff: Bryan Singer (director of X-Men, Superman Returns, etc.) was recently interviewed and he had much to say about the sequel to X-Men: First Class, which he is producing. First off, Mathew Vaughn will be back to direct, which is excellent. He also said that the story will indeed be based on the Days of Future Past story arc, and that’s fantastic! For those of you who have no idea what that means, it’s a story about a possible future that occurs in Marvel Comics where mutants are in concentration camps and lots of other bad things happen. A lot of the X-Men are dead, and the main story’s focus is on the characters Wolverine and Kitty Pryde. Being that it’s the sequel to First Class, Wolverine probably won’t be there, which is fine by me, but we might be getting a slew more new characters. Since time travel is involved, maybe we’ll be getting Bishop and Cable? If so, awesome! I love me some Cable. It’s also possible that all of the continuity errors made in all the previous X-movies will be “fixed” in this movie. If that’s true, that’s a clever way to go about covering their asses, if I do say so myself. My beef with that little tidbit is that First Class was awesome as a standalone film for a new franchise. Why would they want to connect it with the other movies? Especially the… last couple of them… X-Men: the Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine were garbage.

  • Speaking of Logan, The Wolverine is filming in Australia and I couldn’t care less…. That’s all I have to say about that.

Nobody knows if this is the actual poster. Nobody at TM cares.

  • Disney had just announced that Joss Whedon will be back to write and direct the Avengers sequel! Hallelujah! There is a God! And if that wasn’t good enough, Whedon is in talks to create a “Marvel-based” series for ABC. Excellent news!

  • While we’re on comic book movie news, Marc Webb may or may not be coming back to The Amazing Spider-Man. A long time ago, Fox Searchlight put Webb on contract: after (500) Days of Summer, Webb has to make at least one more movie for them. Since Sony’s looking to have The Amazing Spider-Man sequel out in at least the next two years, Searchlight might not let him go ahead and do it because they don’t want to have to wait that long. So a possible solution to this problem is that if Webb decides to do The Amazing Spider-Man sequel, he’s gonna have to do two movies for Fox Searchlight, as opposed to just one. It’s a strange contract deal, really. Hopefully he returns to Spider-Man, because he’s half the reason it was great in the first place. If he doesn’t return, I probably wouldn’t blame him because Sony cut and edited the whole film prior to it's release to match its bogus marketing scheme. Webb’s a talented dude, so I’m sure whatever decision he makes will be just fine for him.

  • In non-comic news, Universal Studios is making a disaster movie about an earthquake. It’s probably going to be a lot like the movie Twister with a premise like that. Now, why should we care? What can make this movie even remotely interesting? Well, JJ Abrams will be directing it, and the Oscar-winning man who wrote Milk, Dustin Lance Black, will be writing it. Now that’s a movie worth watching! It’s a dull premise, no doubt, but those two are very talented men. I’ll follow that story when more is known about it.

  • Warner Bros. will be making a prequel to The Shining. Now let that sink in… Sunk in yet? Ok, I’ll bite. Why? Yes, there is, without a doubt, a story to be told as far as any prequel goes, but there are three problems with that for me: A) it’d ruin the mystery of The Shining. A huge reason why that movie works so well is because you don’t know what happened, and why the... atmosphere is the way it is. B) Jack Nicholson is a billion years older now. Would he even be in it? He’d have to be, right? C) Stephen King had just recently written a sequel to the book. Why don’t they just do a movie adaptation of that instead? Stoppit WB. Stoppit.

We will finally know the startling origin of the rotting tub lady! (WE'RE SORRY)

  • While we’re questioning WB, they’re already set on rebooting Batman. Well that was fast. In 2016, we’ll be watching The Batman. It apparently won’t be another origin, which is great. It’ll be a “year two” sort of thing. Cool, I guess, but Nolan’s trilogy is still gonna be stuck in peoples’ brains. Couldn’t that be a problem? I guess the real draw-in will be that it may or may not tie-in to a possible Justice League movie… Hm… I wonder what we can expect from that…

  • Sequel news! Bad Santa 2 is finally in the works! It’s gonna happen! And that’s awesome! Bad Santa is a highly underrated holiday film (not for kiddies, mind you) and Billy Bob Thornton was excellent in it! Good for them!

  • Prometheus 2 is happening in either 2014 or 2015, and it’s gonna be awesome. Love or hate the first one, you’re gonna go see it. Wanna know why? Because you’re just as curious as everyone else. Bring it on.

  • And in disappointing sequel news, Rush Hour 4’s gonna happen as well. Yep. Again… for the fourth time…. Producer Arthur Sarkissian was saying how the last two films in the series weren’t all that they could be, and that he wants to take the next one in the same direction they took in the first one. Make it “down to earth” and “gritty.” Yeah, see, they’re really old now, and nobody misses Chris Tucker. At all. Right? Right.

  • Speaking of fourth movies, Paranormal Activity 4’s a go. The trailer’s out and… Ok, I loved the first three (sue me), but this one just looks… Meh. Four is too much. Stoppit.

  • Oh, and Ghostbusters 3 is happening without Bill Murray. Yep… Alright, let’s wind back the clock: For the longest time, Dan Aykroyd has been saying that Ghostbusters 3 will totally be happening, and that Murray may or may not be coming back. After what feels like forever, Aykroyd finally confirmed that Murray will not be in it, and that they will be making the movie anyway. He promises that it’ll still be successful without Bill. Ouch. You suck, Mr. Aykroyd. May the suckfest begin with your sucky Ghostbusters movie!

  • Rob Zombie’s new movie Lords of Salem is coming soon to a theater near you. Pictures are out and about and…. they’re creepy. I wouldn’t expect anything less from him. You ever see his take on Michael Myers in Halloween? That was great. Its sequel… not so much…
