Who Likes (Animated) Short Shorts?!

- by Ninja Ross, 2 July 2014

Regular readers may remember a thing I wrote not so long ago called “Who Likes Short Shorts?!?” That wasn’t about the kind you wear! It was actually a feature about some most excellent short films, dude. How about some more of that? Only this time, it’s all animated! Because there’s a lot of animated shorts. Again, not the kind you wear.

FIRST UP! "POST HUMAN"!

Let’s kick things off with a bit of NSFW animation. I’m gonna cut right to the chase, here: It has face melting boobies. That’s why you should watch it. If, however, you need another reason, it’s also very well animated.

It has a bit of an anime style to it, but with plenty of western sci fi influences. It’s visually exciting and fun to watch. Which is good, because the story isn’t exactly ground breaking. This one really is all about the visuals. It does, however, star Tricia Helfer, so that’s nice.

NEXT WE GOT "REWARD"!

Reward leans more towards the sappy, nice friendship-y kind of story. It follows two average guys who come across a treasure map dropped by a big, handsome, stereotypical fantasy hero.

After ripping the map, they team up and head out on an adventure. They fight giants, creepy squids and rival treasure hunters. It’s kinda sweet and it has a lot of fun moments to keep it from getting too sappy.

The animation is a bit choppy in places but the overall style keeps that from taking you out of the experience.

NOW YOU'RE WATCHING "BEE AND PUPPYCAT"!

Ever have one of those days where a magical cat dog thing falls on your head and gets you a temporary job? Yeah... Yeah. But that’s the premise of this next short animation.

Bee and Puppycat is brought to you by Frederator, the studio responsible for the likes of Adventure Time and Bravest Warriors. In terms of tone, it’s very similar to Adventure Time so it’s a sure bet you’d like this, if you enjoy Finn and Jake’s weird adventures.

The animation is fairly similar to Frederator’s other shows, with a simplistic yet creative art style and plenty of colour. While it is very silly, it’s also imaginative and fun. Well worth ten minutes of your precious time.

CHANGE OF PACE! "FRANCES"!

This one is actually based on a short story written for a radio show, so it comes off as a campfire ghost story. It’s not horrifying, but the tone and narration keeps the atmosphere dark and kind of charming.

It’s pretty much entirely set in a rowboat, while a girl fears for her life as something keeps knocking from down below. It’s very Lovecraft influenced, which is never a bad thing (unless it’s racist, I suppose...).

I’m actually not a big fan of the animation itself, as I’m extremely picky with CGI, but it’s the Lovecraft influences that keep this one interesting for me.

TIME FOR AN ADVERT! "GOOD BOOKS METAMORPHOSIS"!

Yup, this one’s actually an advert for a book shop. A book shop that gives all its money to Oxfam, which is always pretty nice. That’s a cool thing to do, right?

Almost as cool is having an advert based on “fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” full of cool colours and crazy sounds. It looks good, it sure SOUNDS good and it’s all for a good cause. Plus, anything inspired by Hunter S Thompson’s fabulous Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is nothing short of awesome.

And that should keep you busy for a while... ARE YOU ENTERTAINED?!? Of course, there are plenty more short animations out there that you need to check out, but this is a good place to start.
