Comics Review: "Big Man Plans" #1
I really like Eric Powell’s art, so I’ve always wanted to check out “The Goon”, but man, there’s just so much of it. Ross has been raving about the series for ages, but I somehow never could find the time to sit down and check out what I’ve been missing out on all these years. Thankfully, there’s a new miniseries, called “Big Man Plans”, where I could get my non-Goon Powell fix.
Big Man does get his wish and goes to ‘Nam as part of an experimental project. There, he becomes a tunnel rat, going into the tunnels Charlie is hiding in and killing them all, all the while looking like Alpha Flight’s Puck doing an impersonation of that time the Punisher wore a skull facepaint. It is cool. But every good thing eventually ends, and that’s what happened with Big Man’s days in Vietnam. After that, he got into some more trouble that landed him in prison. He came out even tougher than before. That’s about where we caught up with him. He wanted to go straight, but he received a letter that made him go back to Tennessee, where his story started. Who was the letter from? What badass things will Big Man be doing there? That’s what we’ll find out in #2. This will be a four issue mini, and this ish mostly sets things up, but I gotta say it say, it does in a real smooth way. Big Man’s identity and character is well established. We see him throughout the years and can sympathize with him. We also get to see him stab people in the neck, explode a bar, and beat a guy with a tire iron while his cock is hanging out. That is a lot to put in one issue, but Wiesch and Powell make the story flow real well. You WILL get hooked, and you WILL want to find out what happens next. It’s a dirty, grimy story, and these two gentlemen know exactly how to tell it. As for the art side of things, shit is fantastic. I love Powell’s art style, and it fits so well with the story. From what I can tell, Powell also did the colors, and it’s one of my favorite things: the tones change in each period we see of Big Man’s life, and all the flashbacks look different to the “present” (1979 present) day. Splendid work there. All in all, this is a very nice start and the best #1 to come out this week. I have no doubts about whether or not I’ll be picking up #2 - if it’s as strong as this issue, the series may be real good. And who knows, maybe we’ll even get to see Big Man outlive the initial 4 issue mini. Also, now I GOTTA start reading “The Goon”. From the beginning. "Big Man Plans" #1 is out now, son! Get it! Or maybe you already did? How did you like it? Will we ever see Norman again? What do YOU think? Let us know in the comments! |
