Movie Buzz: An Early Look At Cinema In 20162015 is finally coming to a close. It’s been a crazy year for movies, thanks to the likes of Star Wars, Mad Max and The Hunger Games tearing up the box office. But that doesn’t mean 2016 is going to be dull! In fact, here at Trash Mutant we’ve been hit by some serious exclusive scoops regarding some of 2016’s biggest movies, including one very special movie coming out in 2017.
CAPTAIN AMERICA'S NEW ROLE IN A SECOND IRON MAN FRANCHISE NINJA ROSS: With the upcoming release of Captain America: Civil War, several facts have come to light. The most noteable of which is the important role that Iron Man will be playing in the movie. SEÑOR EDITOR: Yes, it looks like he will be playing the classic scorned friend, who then gets beaten up by his ex-friend and the ex-friend’s other friend. It's really a major part. NR: The last Captain America movie wasn’t much of a solo film, either. It featured Cap teaming up with Black Widow and Falcon to take down the Winter Soldier, whom he teams up with in Civil War to fight Iron Man. He’s also again joined by Black Widow and Falcon. So, what’s the next step? Well, we have the scoop of the century! Straight from the horse’s mouth! In Iron Man: Captain America No More (a title clearly taken from the classic Mark Gruenwald arc in the Cap comics), Cap begins losing his hair, thanks to the cancer from all the super serum drugs injected into his system in the 1940’s, way back before they knew this shit causes cancer. SE: And this is where it gets really interesting. These physical changes Cap is going through lead him on a spiritual journey. This is the first time he actually has to think in the movies, and being confronted with his health issues, he begins to think a lot. He starts thinking of the events of Civil War and realizing what a complete mess it made. A complete mess. How there’s so much he should atone for. He travels to Great Britain, where he enlists in the famous Butler School. NR: With the cancer becoming even more aggressive, Cap returns to New York seeking help from the only scientist he really knows: Tony Stark. Curing Cap of the cancer is no easy task and results in Cap losing the majority of his memory. Lacking a Jarvis since the creation of Vision, Stark sees a chance for Cap to finally make amends. SE: A chance to clean up his act, as Stark cheekily says, before the big reveal happens. Now, if you’re a comics fan, you already know where this is going! We will finally get a real Jarvis in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Cap’s identity changes completely to that of Jarvis, the only non-British butler in the history of comics, and he gets to the cleaning. He's on a mission to clean both the literal and metaphorical mess that Civil War caused. This is probably the biggest surprise that happens in this phase of the MCU movies! NR: And we finally get the second Iron Man franchise we’ve always wanted! It’s something to look forward to! SE: I think we can say that’s a bald new direction, if that wasn’t such an awful thing to say. THE NEW POWER RANGERS MOVIE MAY BE A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT SE: As you probably know, Ross, we will soon be getting a new Power Rangers movie. Fans of the franchise were originally quite hopeful, but what we’ve been hearing in recent months made many of them question whether this won’t end up like the TMNT reboot. For one thing, fans were upset that the studio chose not to stick to the racial and cultural stereotypes that each Ranger represented. It seems the Black Ranger won’t be black, the Yellow Ranger won’t be Asian, the White Ranger won’t be white, the Pink Ranger may not even be female after all, and the Blue Ranger won’t silently suffer from chronic depression. NR: Yeah, this was the first sign that, unfortunately, things are looking good for the Power Rangers movie. After losing the stereotypes that fans loved from the original series, the only thing that could make it worse was an actual script. Or actors. SE: While the first news made fans really uneasy, rumors are that it’s only the tip of the iceberg. Sources close to the project say that the 2017 movie is shaping up in really unexpected ways. For one thing, those who saw the new leaked version of the script, say it is unexpectedly well-written. The Power Rangers fans have been making their voices heard in social media, and they ask questions. Where is the classic Power Rangers feeling that I should be embarassed for liking this? Why am I so focused on the plot now? What is this “depth” thing? NR: While initial reactions regarding the plot have been too positive for anyone’s liking, fans are still hopeful. They’re hanging onto the fact that Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz wrote Agent Cody Banks. Can they repeat their writing failures with the new Power Rangers movie and keep everything as awful as the source material requires? SE: Here’s hoping, but so far the big question is if this movie can even suck a tiny bit as much as it needs to, because right now, the fans are furious. When the news hit that Naomi Scott won’t be playing the Pink Ranger after all, it was an uproar. Let’s hope this movie can get back on tracks. KEVIN JAMES TO TACKLE TROLLS NR: In other movie news, it has recently been revealed that Kevin James will be starring in one of the most anticipated comedies in recent years: The Trolls. The Trolls being an updated, down to earth movie based on the classic children’s toy, hoping to match the success of Battleships. SE: Yes, Battleships and Pixels proved that there’s a real market for mildly entertaining nostalgia-based movies that may or may not have Kevin James in them. NR: Here at Trash Mutant, we are looking forward to seeing just what colour Kevin James’ hair will be. Green? Pink? We have an early promotional image to look at right now, but only time will tell just how close they will be sticking to the original look. SE: I’d say that’s pretty close to the original look. A little too close for comfort, even. NR: Possibly the most exciting news to come out of this announcement is the fact that Adam Sandler will be making his directorial debut. This would add even more legitimacy to this movie, helping Kevin James make yet another comedy hit. SE: To be honest with you, Ross, while I do remember the Trolls well, I am not entirely sure on what the whole deal was with this franchise. I am not sure what Trolls did, other than going naked and having crazy hair. James may have some surprises in store for this one, but I am sure we can expect some of that signature Kevin James humor. This could really become one of these comedies that you keep seeing over and over on television, even though you don’t want to. NR: Hopefully, we will see plenty of James’ classic humour, yes. Hopefully a segway, maybe some fat jokes? I especially hope we see “suprised fat man” plenty. That’s a look that never gets old! A NEW STANDALONE STAR WARS MOVIE ANNOUNCED SE: If you tried to avoid any Star Wars news recently (just in case there’s spoilers for “Force Awakens” in there) then you may have missed the recent story about Chandler Riggs auditioning for the role of Han Solo in an upcoming 2018 standalone movie. If you’re wondering who is Chandler Riggs, then I’ll just make it easy for you - he’s Carl from Walking Dead. NR: Producers weren’t impressed by Riggs’ young Solo, as he seemed to look too sad all the time. SE: It seems they really weren’t into that kind of Han, but when they saw Carl's audition tape, they realized he would be perfect for another character. In fact, they pretty much built a whole new exciting Star Wars project around that. While Riggs won’t be Solo, he will play the main role in a brand new standalone movie set between the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy. And this is actually really, really exciting, since J.J. Abrams came up with a movie about a classic Star Wars character , who is neither a Jedi, a Sith, a famous bounty hunter or Han Solo. Personally, that’s something I’ve always wanted to see! Carl will be playing Takeel, who we first saw in the very first Star Wars movie, “Star Wars”. And it’s Takeel! NR: Also known by the more popular name, Snaggletooth, Takeel was a burned out spice addict and a patron of Chalmun’s Cantina, where he wasted most of his time, before Obi-Wan Kenobi entered the scene and took Ponda Baba’s arm. SE: Right! He was also sometimes called “Hunchback”, for obvious reasons. Now, we will finally get to see what Takeel was doing before the events of “A New Hope”. And we will have Chandler Riggs, in full costume, portraying that! How did Snaggletooth first get into spice? How often did he rat people out to the Imperials? This will probably be a bit of a drama, which suits Carl and the character very well. NR: Set to be a darker drama than you’d normally expect from the Star Wars universe, Takeel’s solo movie will follow him through his early years and show just how far he fell. To add even more intrigue to the project, it’ll also be directed by David Lynch. As Snaggletooth develops his addiction to Spice, it’ll be interesting to see how Lynch applies his more experimental style to the visuals. SE: I think this role will really work well with Carl’s skillset as an actor. He can do “numb” really well! That will help with all the drug use scenes. Really looking forward to see if they attempt to tie the Snaggletooth movie to the characters of Force Awakens in any way. NR: I’m assuming that the mix of Star Wars and Lynch will help bring new fans to the franchise and shake things up a bit. Very exciting. So there we have it, some REALLY interesting news as we approach next year’s blockbusters! Which movie are you looking forward to the most? Do you think Carl will do Snaggletooth justice? How do you feel about yet another Kevin James movie? Let us know in the comments! |
