RECOMMENDED: "GalaXafreaks"Hydra Cap getting you down? Not sure what to think of Batman and Flash playing with buttons? Or maybe you're just looking for something a bit different to read? As always, Trash Mutant has you covered! You're clearly in desperate need of GalaXafreaks!
The dialogue is especially smart and humorous, helping to build the world created by Pawley, adding context where needed. It flows well, though; images do most of the essential talking, the dialogue just makes things richer. The best character of the bunch would be Captain Yeah!, but that's mostly because the exclamation point is part of his name. But the other characters are just as well designed, with the ring covered Rongzola being exactly as he should be judging by his name. Captain Yeah! Originally appeared in his own web comic on The Future Heart. After checking out GalaXafreaks, it was interesting to go back to these roots and take a look at how Pawley's style has progressed and how his work has improved since then. But that's not to say there's anything wrong with the original Captain Yeah! Series; the art is almost as spectacular there as it is in GalaXafreaks. But the core GalaXafreaks members aren't the only characters with interesting designs; every inhabitant of this universe that appears is fascinating and unique. That includes the Freak that this fictional galaxy is in the head of! The art in GalaXafreaks is very reminiscent of bright, vibrant graffiti art, the sort you'd see from an artist like Nychos, or the surreal Alex Pardee. It's a very unique style on its own, though, blending a lot of bizarre characters and bright, detailed colours. They always seemed happily amazed with everything new that shows up on their days out. To be fair, if evil worms exploded out of a DJ's head speaker, I would also be pretty amazed and very surprised. But Pawley's art and storytelling makes sure that every new thing that pops up is unique and interesting. And after the initial designs are taken in, it's the colour that immediately catches your eye. It is especially bright, but it's detailed and layered with plenty of striking combinations and shades so it's never painfully or distractingly bright. It's just face meltingly awesome. There's nine issues of the comic so far and Pawley is currently seeking funding for the tenth, the start of a new GalaXafreaks series called “Time Songs”. It's well worth checking out what's already available in anticipation for it and definitely go give it some money when you no doubt discover I am 100% accurate, as always. GalaXafreaks is one of the slickest, most imaginative and funniest books available in recent years. It's marketed as an all ages book and it's true in every sense: there's fun for all the family here, with plenty of content aimed at kids, but also easily appealing to adults. Besides, it's probably best to give all kids a glimpse of what an acid trip looks like before they get into your stash. Check out GalaXafreaks on Kickstarter and on their website and let us know how you liked it!
