The "Draw Trash Mutant" First Edition Finale! It's been through ups and downs, it took a while to get here, but the "DRAW TRASH MUTANT" Initiative first edition finale is finally here! Today, the Trash Mutant crew takes a look at the submissions, discusses each one and picks the first ever DRAW TRASH MUTANT winner! We can barely control ourselves!!!
Can you feel the excitement?!? Without further delay, let's look at the entries, read the Trash Mutants' thoughts on each one and find out who the jury (AKA the site's staff!) chose as the winner. Trash Mutant by DUNCAN SCOTT WILSON: NINJA ROSS: There is a dead bird sticking out of his leg. A dead bird. That's painfully cool. But the whole piece is fantastic, Duncan sure does know how to make a disgusting monster look good. Very reminiscent of Swamp Thing, too. SEÑOR EDITOR: Similarities to Swamp Thing are never a bad thing. I like how he is very clearly "one with the trash", with all the different stuff sticking out of him. Badass. STEVE GARCIA: As a fellow artist, very crisp, clean lines are something I really envy here. The bird is a fantastic detail, the long, chipped fingernails are great, and I really like this entry. Awesome. KAZEKUN: Now THIS is a Trash Mutant. As Ross pointed out, the similarities to Swamp Thing are definitely there, and ole Swampy is kind of a Trash Mutant himself if you think about it. I like the disgust he has going about him, it's repulsive and that's what makes him such a joy to look at. Oh! And that poor birdy in his leg! Trash Mutant by JACOB P. KELOGG: Jacob P. Kelogg lets us know that, while he doesn't have any web page for his art, he can be followed on Twitter @jakecobra45!
NINJA ROSS: Trash Mutant for the Super Nintendo!!! That's incredibly cool. It genuinely looks like a screen cap from a game. It'd be an awesome game, too. SEÑOR EDITOR: Would it be a 2 player game? Would Player 2 be a similar Mutant but with a different colour scheme or something else entirely? Anyway, yeah, I dig this. I want to play this game. This is a really nice, stylized Mutant. Great job, Jake! STEVE GARCIA: A unique and clever way to go about this contest. Brownie points for originality! KAZEKUN: I. Love. This. Definitely one of my top favorites. Call me a Nintenerd, but I love the 8-bit look. And every time I look at this I think mutie is about to say to us "All your trash r belong to me" and it makes me laugh way more than it should, which is a good thing. Awesome entry! Trash Mutant by MACIEK KLEIN: SEÑOR EDITOR: Maciek jacked our background, but we're cool with that. That's a rather mean looking Mutant, and it looks like he's caught one of the birdies. What is he planning to do with it...? NINJA ROSS: That's what I look like when I've had too much to drink. Dead bird and everything. I do love the way he used the background here, using it as Trash Mutant's hunting ground. STEVE GARCIA: I really like the style here, and I love that he's listening to headphones. Trash Mutant likes to party-- especially with dead birds in hand. Nice use of the background here as well. Great entry. KAZEKUN: I like the incorporation of the headphones. Very nice touch. This looks like a punk that could jack you up, but I'm fine with that as the Trash Mutant ain't no push-over. Though I gotta say I'm fearin' for that bird he's holding. The style oddly enough fits well with the background which makes this a solid entry. Trash Mutant by ANGY W. / LADY SIF: Angy W. included this message with her submission: "I did a little sketch for the Trash Mutant drawing contest. Didn't have time to colorize it though. Hope you like it anyways! I was drawing a Trash Mutant for your contest, cause I like all kinds of freaky creatures. My version of the Trash Mutant is a combination of a skater, rocker and a comic book geek. He's having a million eyes all over his scaly fuzzy body, so he can always see the latest news on the web."
Angy is from Germany and you can check out more of her art here. She's also working on a comic called "Der Adler" and you can check it's fanpage on Facebook. SEÑOR EDITOR: Sketch or not, this is elaborate as hell. It's seemingly simple, yet there's plenty of details. And he's got plenty of trash behind him, too! STEVE GARCIA: Impeccable detail, trash, and bling. Yup, I think this just about sums up what we stand for. Simply incredible work here, and congratulations for such an amazing piece. KAZEKUN: I love this 'lax kid here, he ain't got no beef with the world, he's just chillin' in his hole he's built for himself. He's got a very lovable quality to him, like he looks and dresses like a punk but he couldn't hurt a fly. The detail is astounding too for a sketch. Like Steve said, this is a perfect summation of us. NINJA ROSS: Everything about this is fantastic. from the attention to detail, the eyes everywhere to the graffiti title. It's just a pleasure to look at. Trash Mutant by PAUL ROSE Paul Rose is the artist for webcomics such as "ALAGG THE BARBARIAN" as well as "DON'T EVER TELL ALEX".
SEÑOR EDITOR: It's coming right at us!! Paul Rose's Trash Mutant sure looks mad, and with that kind of scar on your head, you would be too. His pants suggest a military background! He's one tough dude. NINJA ROSS: This is the poster for Pixar's new film "Finding Trash Mutant." It comes out real soon, be on the lookout! Gotta love that CG mutant, though. STEVE GARCIA: A CG entry is something I never thought I'd see in this contest, and it looks amazing. This certainly doesn't look easy to do, so I think I speak for everyone when I say that the hard work is well-appreciated! KAZEKUN: The look and feel is very reminiscent of the version of Frankenstein from the live-action Van Helsing movie. I look at this guy and think, aww, he's not such a bad guy once you get to know him. Though I'm sure he'd rip my arms off if I tried to hug him. I like it. Trash Mutant by MICAH ARNDT Micah Arndt is the artist of "SUPERPOWERS" and co-founder (with our very own Ross!) of 2True Comics.
SEÑOR EDITOR: Micah is a good friend of ours, and he got his own spin on ol' Trashy. It's a Spider Mutant! He's looking quite sinister! I absolutely love the inks on it. NINJA ROSS: I get the pleasure of seeing Micah's art nearly every week but this is probably one of the best pieces I've seen him do. Love the shading and the glowing red eyes that stick out among the grey and black. STEVE GARCIA: A very different take on the Trash Mutant is something I wanted to see, and Micah nailed it. The red eyes really pop here, and a little "pop" is never bad for the site. Excellence. KAZEKUN: Trash Mutant. Spider-Man hangs around trash sometimes. So that makes sense. With all the mutations Spidey has gone through over the years, I think a TM mutation looks right at home, and with this obviously being the Ben Reilly take it makes it that much more creepy. I love the art style and the glowing red eyes as well! Trash Mutant by KRANG SEÑOR EDITOR: He's eating some of the things we reviewed! I like that we got entries in many different styles. This is a very simple, but it looks different and pretty cool. NINJA ROSS: It looks like something out of a fairy tale book or from Where the Wild Thing Are. Kind of an innocent Trash Mutant, which is nice to see. STEVE GARCIA: He's adorable! And he has a wrench! I love it, and the nod to the stuff we've reviewed is a great detail. Good stuff up in here. KAZEKUN: I would love to see more details added to this little guy to blend the stuff we've reviewed better, but other than that this guy is cute as a button. He reminds me of the idea of the troll from Billy Goats Gruff, not sure why. But I could see him living under a bridge. So there you have it! All great contributions, and we're absolutely serious when we say we love each of them! Huge thanks to everybody who took the time to participate in our first contest and have some fun with us! You guys are awesome. And now it's time for the Trash Mutant jury to choose a winner. It wasn't an easy task, as each of us had our favorite entry, but after about 3 days of fights, insults, hurt feelings, physical abuse and all around chaos, we decided... THE WINNER... IS... ANGY W. aka LADY SIF! Congratulations, Angy! Your Mutant won the first edition of DRAW TRASH MUTANT! We will contact Angy immediately, and we can hopefully bring you, our good readers, a spotlight feature on Angy and her art! (UPDATE: Read an interview with Angy W. and see more of her art right here!) What happens with "DRAW TRASH MUTANT" next? Is this the end? No! We will come back with a second edition, and possibly a different formula soon. Stay tuned. If you don't check the site daily (shame on you!) then all updates, as usual, will be posted on our Facebook page and our Twitter. So there you have it! The first edition of DRAW TRASH MUTANT is finished! How did you like the submissions? Do you agree with the Mutant jury's verdict? Who was your choice? Sound off in the comments! |
