TM Movie News: Aquaman, Joker, Alien, Shaft & more!

- by Steve Garcia, 23 February 2014

Happy Monday, my lovely Muties! They’re making another Alien? They cast WHO in Deadpool?!  Did Aquaman seriously just win People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive”?! Read ‘em and weep everybody-- IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Picture

Alien:

  • Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Chappie) will be directing an all-new Alien movie! Sources say that it’s supposed to take place after the events of the Ridley Scott-directed Prometheus 2, which is aiming for a 2016 release. He has supposedly been working on this movie with Fox for the last few months, and it’s currently unknown whether or not Sigourney Weaver will be reprising her iconic role as astronaut and alien ass-kicker, Ellen Ripley. Blomkamp let the bomb drop on his Instagram with this not-so-subtle image:

  • Science fiction isn’t exactly a new realm for Blomkamp. He obviously has the talent if District 9 was any indication, but Elysium wasn’t exactly the best movie ever, so there’s that. In the end, whether or not Chappie delivers is really what I’m waiting for before I get excited about his new look at Alien. Best wishes, Neil!

Assassin’s Creed:

  • Actress Marion Cotillard has joined the cast of Assassin’s Creed! Cotillard has had a very wide range in the span of her career from playing the part of crazy possessive girlfriend Talia al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises, to her Academy Award-winning performance in the dramatic biopic, La Vie en Rose. Assassin’s Creed is looking to finally begin production in early fall for a December 21, 2016 release. Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Shame) is still set to star, with Justin Kurzel (The Turning) sitting in the director’s chair.

Deadpool:

  • Deadpool’s release date is now officially less than a year away, so every casting announcement ever regarding this film has struck the web this week. Starring alongside Ryan Reynolds’s Merc with a Mouth so far will be Gina Carano (Fast and Furious 6), T.J. Miller (Big Hero 6), and Morena Baccarin (Gotham, Firefly). Carano is set to play the super-strong Angel Dust, who affiliates herself with the subterranean mutant group, the Morlocks, in the comics. While the other actors’ roles are still undisclosed, rumors suggest that Miller will be playing Weasel, Deadpool’s hacker sidekick, and Baccarin will be playing Deadpool’s main love interest. For anyone who cares, Colossus actor Daniel Cudmore took to twitter to explain that he will not be making an appearance in this movie despite the popular belief. Production for Deadpool starts next month in Vancouver, and it’ll be in theaters on February 12, 2016. Until then, check out Reynolds’s official tease of the mask below:

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales:

  • Another Pirates movie? Another Pirates movie. Director Jerry Bruckheimer himself took to twitter earlier this week to drop the following image:

  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales comes to theaters on July 17, 2017. I’d tell you what I think about it, but I’ll let you be the judge—check out the shiny new synopsis below:
  • Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him.  Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

Shaft:

  • SHAFT. New Line Cinema is rebooting Shaft! The guy who produced the original Predator, John Davis, is producing the upcoming reboot. SHAFT. That is literally all we know as of the time I’m typing this. Just know that Shaft is making a comeback. …SHAFT.

Suicide Squad:

  • The Joker speaks! Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) has a heavy weight on his shoulders, as he is currently preparing for his role as The Joker for the upcoming Suicide Squad. These are his quotes from his interview with Billboard:
  • “Do you mind if I eat a little? I’m trying to gain a lot of weight. It means I have to eat every couple of hours — and I’m terrible at eating a lot. The opportunity to take on this nearly Shakespearean character — that’s what graphic novels and comic books are becoming, right?  [He's] this beautiful disaster of a character — what a big challenge.”
  • If he’s bulking up for the role, chances are that we’re in for a somewhat different performance from the previous onscreen interpretations of The Joker. Leto is on point by describing a character as “nearly Shakespearean,” and it looks like he’s been doing his homework. As of right now, we have no idea just how involved Joker will be with the team, but if anything is certain, it’s that we’re all looking forward to see how he interacts with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Ben Affleck’s Batman. Suicide Squad comes to theaters on August 5, 2016.

X-Men: Apocalypse:

  • Nightcrawler Begins! Kodi Smit-McPhee (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) will be playing the role of a young Kurt Wagner in the upcoming mutant extravaganza: X-Men: Apocalypse. Being that the film has already cast younger versions of Cyclops, Storm, and Jean Grey, it should be a no-brainer that they would do the same for the fuzzy blue elf. Nightcrawler is famously the son of mutants Mystique and Azazel in the comics, who both already made appearances since X-Men: First Class. Welcome back, Nightcrawler!

STUFF YOU SHOULD LOOK AT:

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice:

  • Because he was bored, Zack Snyder tweeted a picture of Jason Momoa as Aquaman! Unite the seven seas! Or Justice League members… LOOK AT IT!

Obraz

Big Birdman:

  • This is an excellent parody featuring Big Bird and the guy who plays Big Bird! LOOK AT IT! Also, WATCH BIRDMAN!

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.:

  • Henry Cavil being not Superman! Spy stuff! LOOK AT IT!

And there you have it, my lovely Muties! Do we need another Alien? What do you think about Assassin’s Creed’s cast so far? Are we tired of Jack Sparrow, or are we giving him the benefit of the doubt with Pirates 5? Let us know! As always, have an excellent week ahead and be good to one another!
