TM Movie News: Cruise & The Mummy, Avatar, Thor & more!

- by Steve Garcia, 26 January 2016

Happy Tuesday, my lovely Muties! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Picture

Avatar 2:

  • Remember Avatar? That movie that made a whole bunch of money almost ten years ago? Director James Cameron has apparently been very hard at work trying to make not one, but three sequel for quite some time now. Avatar 2 was originally planned for a December 2017 release, but according to a report from The Wrap, it looks like audiences are just going to have to wait even longer. While the studio hasn’t given any comments on the subject, the delay was most likely 100% because Disney announced that Star Wars: Episode VIII’s release date will be in December 2017 and Fox doesn’t want to mess with that box office competition. Avatar 2’s new date still hasn’t been announced, but it and its two other sequels will be filmed back to back to back according to Cameron, which means that they will all likely be released a year apart from each other.

Doctor Strange:

  • We have a Wong! Originally broken by The Hollywood Reporter, it has been announced that The Martian’s own Benedict Wong has been cast as Wong, Doctor Strange’s longtime manservant and apprentice. Being that it’s 2016, it’s expected that the “manservant” part will likely not make it in the film (and for good reason), but it’s nice to finally have confirmation that the character will be a part of the adaptation. Doctor Strange is slated for a November 4, 2016 release, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, and many more.

The Mummy:

  • The Mummy reboot now officially has its star and release date! Tom Cruise has signed on in the lead role, and it’s slated for a June 9, 2017 release. What’s more is that apparently the Mummy itself will be female according to a few sources. The Mummy will be the first installment of a shared film universe inhabited by the Universal Monsters, including Frankenstein’s Monster and his Bride, Wolf Man, Dracula, and several others. Being that Cruise isn’t the kind of actor that just choose films for a paycheck, something about this film must have caught the actor’s attention to get him involved. It’s that, and that reason only that I’m excited for it!

Thor: Ragnarok:

  • After Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo drunkenly revealed that acclaimed actress Cate Blanchett will indeed be playing the film’s villain, it’s been widely speculated on just who she’ll be playing. If this report holds true, Blanchett has been cast as Hela, the ruler of what’s basically Asgardian Hell. With a name like Ragnarok (which is essentially the Norse God Apocalypse), it makes a ton of sense that a character of this importance would be featured in the film. Hopefully this movie will be the one to end Marvel’s continued streak of lackluster villains. We’ll see! Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3, 2017.
