TM Movie News: Gambit, Namor, the Martian and Batfleck

- by Steve Garcia, 19 May 2014

Happy Monday, my lovely Trash Muties! Been an oddly slow couple of weeks, but I still got the goods for ya! Which X-Man will be the new face of the franchise? Who is Krampus, and why does everyone wanna make a movie about it nowadays? Martians, Mass Effect, and Star Trek?! THE BATFLECK RISES! It’s MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Picture

Gambit:

  • Never thought I’d live to see the day that Gambit from the X-Men will be getting his own feature film… And that I’d be the one reporting it! That’s right mutants and madams, Gambit will be getting his own feature film after the character will be reintroduced to moviegoers in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, according to producer Lauren Shuler Donner. Donner also dropped the bomb that the Ragin’ Cajun will be played by none other than Channing Tatum. Since Hugh Jackman is more or less finished playing Wolverine following his ninth appearance as the character in the third Wolverine film, the X-Men franchise will need a new face to draw the audiences in. Looks like we got our winner!

Krampus:

  • Remember how I told you Kevin Smith was making a Christmas Krampus movie? Well, he’s got company! Director Michael Doughtery (Trick ‘r Treat) will be continuing his holiday theme with his own take on Krampus for Legendary pictures. Here’s what he had to say about that:
  • "The dark ancient origins of our holidays have always fascinated me. I've been drawing twisted Christmas cards for well over a decade, so it only made sense to bring some of that morbid yuletide fun to the big screen, and Krampus was the perfect mythology to do that. Christmas has been invading Halloween for far too long. It's time to return the favor."

The Martian:

  • Ridley Scott is in talks to direct a martian movie starring Matt Damon. And if that’s not enough to get you to see this movie, then I got nothing else for you… Well, maybe I do. The film is based on a novel written by Andy Weir. Check out the book’s synopsis and tell me if you dig it:
“Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?”

Mass Effect (or Namor):

  • In perhaps the most mysterious rumor that I’ve seen in a while, Universal and Legendary Pictures may or may not have announced that they’re making a movie based on a popular video game franchise: Mass Effect… or Namor the Submariner. Stay with me.
  • The Hollywood Reporter announced that Universal has a “secret” tentpole movie being co-financed by Legendary pictures that’s coming out in November 2016. They also stated that the “Untitled 2016 Event Project is new and not a sequel or remake, though it may be based on underlying intellectual property." Reports suggest that will indeed be the Mass Effect movie. With Disney bringing Star Wars back to life, it’s entirely possible that Universal will attempt to combat it with Mass Effect: a franchise whose fans have been pretty adamant about getting their time to shine. Being that they own the rights and that it’s been discussed fairly recently, I’m willing to bet this is the one. …But then there’s Namor.
  • Recall that a long time ago, Marvel sold the film rights to numerous characters to different companies. Universal got Hulk and Namor, and it has been believed for quite some time that, along with Hulk, they got Namor back before 2008 when The Incredible Hulk was released. Until very recently, however, it was announced by Kevin Feige that Universal still has the rights to use that character, and with this announcement, claims and rumors have spiked the interwebz. To my immediate knowledge, Universal doesn’t really own many superheroes, and the fact that Namor holds the Marvel name would be more than enough for them to fuel a tentpole franchise. Personally, I really do think this announcement belongs to Mass Effect, but the very fact that websites everywhere are screaming Namor’s name goes to show you that the Marvels have a titan presence in today’s movie industry.

Star Trek 3:

  • In other space news, it looks like producer Roberto Orci (The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Star Trek Into Darkness) is stepping up to the big leagues and directing the next Star Trek movie! Sure, it’s tough to see Abrams go, but the fact that this guy has had his hands washed in some pretty big blockbuster hits has me confident that this new Star Trek franchise will remain great. Awesome!

STUFF YOU SHOULD LOOK AT:

Cinderella:

  • Who knew glass slippers can be so iconic and magical?! The teaser for Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella movie is here! 2015. March. Be there. LOOK AT IT!

And that’ll do it for this week, ladies and germs! How great does that Planet of the Apes movie look? Are you a fan of Channing Tatum as Gambit? Would you rather have a Mass Effect movie or a Namor one? Also, what do you think about the new Batsuit?! That’s a wrap, boys and girls! As always, be good to one another!
