TM Movie News: Giant-Sized SDCC Recap!

- by Steve Garcia, 29 July 2013

Giant-sized SDCC Recap edition of Movie News! Superman! Batman! Spider-Man! Godzilla! And much more!

Picture

Amazing Spider-Man 2:

Director Mark Webb dropped a few facts regarding the next Spider-Man film. Minor spoiler alert. Webb revealed that Electro will in fact be the main villain of the film, and will not be sharing the screen with other baddies that may or may not be in the film. RavenCroft Institute, comparable to Batman’s Arkham Asylum, will be introduced. Rhino will be a very small part of this film, but Webb doesn’t count that this is the last time you will see the character in the franchise—He teased that this could be a build up for something bigger. Lastly, while avoiding the topic of Gwen Stacy’s potential death, he states that “the world we’re trying to create is… it’s partly obligated to cannon, but you also have to deviate from the cannon occasionally and so the… y’know… Andrew [Garfield] and Emma [Stone] and Peter and Gwen are – I mean, they’re something really joyful and wonderful about that relationship and it’s a lot of that stuff from the first movie [that] will continue in this second movie.”

  • Steve Says: The more I’m hearing, the more I’m liking. Bring on the potential Sinister Six!

Avengers: Age of Ultron:

Marvel Studios closed their action-packed panel at SDCC with the official title for the next Avengers film: Avengers: Age of Ultron! Director Joss Whedon confirmed that this will not be an adaptation of the Marvel comic of the same name, but rather an all-new origin for the character, while still cherry-picking from past Ultron stories. Ultron creator Hank Pym will not be featured in the film, according to Whedon. After an internet outcry, Ant-Man director Edgar Write reassured fans of the character that he will absolutely be featured in his upcoming AntMan film either way.

  • Steve Says: And in other news, Wolverine will be in the next feature-length Wolverine film! In all seriousness, folks, I love Ultron. He’s a fantastic villain, and it only makes sense that they’d save the biggest foe, Thanos, for the final installment. Whedon’s a smart man, and after The Avengers, I’ll follow that man anywhere. That being said, however, it’s sad to see that Hank Pym (my favorite Marvel) has had both his founding Avengers status and now his greatest creation taken from him. While this makes me a tad less excited for the upcoming Ant-Man film (because why bother at this point?), at least we’re guaranteed a great fight for the next Avengers film.

Chronicle 2:

According to Chronicle writer Max Landis’s twitter feed, it appears that the next Chronicle filmwill neither involve himself or director Josh Trank (who is currently attached to the Fantastic Four reboot):

  • Steve Says:  Ouch. Oh well. I’m sure it’ll be fine anyway. The first one was amazing, and probablymy favorite “found footage” movie ever. We’ll see what happens!

Expendables 3:

In potentially upsetting news, it appears that Nicolas Cage will not be involved with the next
Expendables film. According to Cage himself: “I have not had any formal discussions about ['Expendables 3']. I’m not in Kick-Ass 2 and I don’t think I’m in Expendables 3. And I like those guys [Sylvester Stallone, etc.], but I would say it would be highly unlikely that I’d be in that movie.”

  • Steve Says: NO! This is terrible… This would have been the one time we got to see Nic Cage just go completely balls-to-the-walls insane in an over-the-top action film… This is…. I don’t even. It’s a travesty.

Flash & The Justice League:

Just before WB announced the upcoming Batman/Superman crossover film, various reliable sources such as The Hollywood Reporter  confirmed that not only will Batman be featured in the next Man of Steel installment, but that the Flash will be getting his own feature film in 2016, which will lead to a Justice League movie in 2017.
  • Steve Says: This was a complete and total surprise! It’s fantastic that the Scarlet Speedster will finally get his due, and I can’t wait to hear more about both of these projects, the Flash especially. The next few years are gonna be amazing. Love the Flash! But please, WB, for the love of God, don’t cast Charlie Hunnam, and give us something Wonder Woman-related between now and then!

Godzilla:

At SDCC, Legendary Pictures put an extra emphasis on the Godzilla reboot, slated for a May 16, 2014 release. The trailer was shown, the audience was overwhelmed, and it appears that instead of terrorizing humans, Godzilla will be fighting various monsters throughout the film.

  • Steve Says: SDCC has officially got me excited for this one! It’s been a long time since Godzilla graced the big screen, and it’s looking like 2014 will be his year. The king has returned!

Man of Steel 2:

Warner Bros. shocked and awed the crowds everywhere when Zack Snyder, director of Man of Steel, announced that the next installment of the Superman franchise will feature Batman in the first-ever Batman/Superman crossover feature film. Slated for a 2015 release, it is currently unknown who will don the Dark Knight’s cape and cowl, but the earliest rumor is that Teen Wolf actor Tyler Hoechlin is up for the part. The official title is currently a mystery, but Snyder is calling for “Batman vs. Superman” or “Superman vs. Batman,” as the announcement came witha small passage from Frank Miller’s game-changing graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns:

“I want you to remember, Clark…in all the years to come…in your most private moments…I want you to remember…my hand…at your throat…I want…you to remember…the one man who beat you."

  • Steve Says: There’s so much to say about this movie, but here’s my quick consensus: This is the right move. If WB’s going to be building towards a Justice League movie, eliminating yet another Batman solo-film by introducing him in this one totally speeds up the progress towards the final goal. If the two characters know of each other prior to the JLA, it also takes out the half hour of explaining their relationship out of the final product, allowing the team to actually deal with the threat they end up facing, rather than each other. Also, this automatically landed on the “highest grossing films of all time” list, and it’s only in pre-production. While I’m concerned that this may be just a giant fight scene between the two icons, it doesn’t even matter because IT’S BATMAN AND SUPERMAN IN THE SAME MOVIE. This is going to be amazing!
