- by Steve Garcia, 26 January 2014

Happy Monday, my lovely Muties! Suicide Squad! The Hateful Eight! Batkid Begins and X-Men Apocalypse! Hold onto your hats, ladies and germs-- IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Picture

Batkid Begins:

  • Back in 2013, the city of San Francisco morphed into Gotham City after thousands of people made leukemia survivor Miles Scott’s dream a reality of becoming his favorite superhero for a day. The story of “Batkid” was a social media explosion that touched the hearts of many, including Dana Nachman, director of the newly released documentary Batkid Begins. Now, the documentary is set to be remade into a feature film, with Julia Roberts in the lead role. Nachman is set to be executive producer on the upcoming film.

Doctor Strange:

  • As Marvel Studios continues to lock big names for their big heroes and villains, the latest claim from The Hollywood Reporter suggests that Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange is looking to cast Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as either the film’s potential villain, Baron Mordo, or Doctor Strange’s mentor who is only known as “The Ancient One.” Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange will be coming to a theater near you on November 4, 2016.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2:

  • Guardians of the Galaxy Director James Gunn confirmed that the villainous Ronan the Accuser will not be in the film’s upcoming sequel in a Q&A session on his Facebook page. The director still hopes to use the character for future installments, however. In a recent interview with IGN, Ronan himself, Lee Pace, expressed great interest to return to the role, but claimed to know nothing about the character’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is slated to release on May 5, 2017, and the main cast composed of Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel are expected to return.

The Hateful Eight:

  • Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming western, The Hateful Eight, has finally released its cast. Reported by Variety, the ensemble includes Channing Tatum, Demian Bichir, Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Bruce Dernas. Written and directed by Tarantiono, the film has begun shooting in Telluride, Colorado for a November 13, 2015 release.

Suicide Squad:

  • As if the film’s roster was not impressive enough, rumors reported by Cinema Blend suggest that Joel Edgerton (Warrior) and Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) are supposedly up for the role of Rick Flagg after Tom Hardy stepped down from the role. As the cast continues to grow, the site also stated that Joe Manganiello (True Blood)is up for the role of Slade Wilson/Deathstroke, and the hit-and-miss movie scoop site Latino Review claimed that Gary Sinise will be playing General Wade Eiling, who becomes the muscle-bound brute known as “The General.” Directed by David Ayer (End of Watch), the film’s all-star cast includes Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto as The Joker. Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 5, 2016.

X-Men: Apocalypse:

  • Tweeted and confirmed by director Bryan Singer himself, X-Men: Apocalypse has found its young Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Storm in actors Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones), Tye Sheridan (Mud), and Alexandra Shipp (House of Anubis), respectively.  Following the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, the upcoming sequel will be set in the 1980’s. X-Men: Apocalypse will also star mutant veterans Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence, as well as newcomer to the franchise Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: Episode VII- The Force Awakens) as the mutant Apocalypse. This film is slated for May 27, 2016.
