TM Movie News: Heroes, Mutants, Spies & Vin Diesel

- by Steve Garcia, 5 October 2015

Happy Monday, my lovely Muties! Vin Diesel, Superman, Kingsman, and Wolverine! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Doctor Strange:

  • Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige went on a tirade of sharing new info on a bunch of upcoming Marvel films, the most interesting being Doctor Strange. First off, he confirmed that it will definitely be an origin story, contrary to previous rumors:
  • "For some reason people sometimes talked about how we're not doing an origin story, we're bored of origin stories. I think people are bored of origin stories they've seen before or origin stories that are overly familiar. Doctor Strange has one of the best, most classic, most unique origin stories of any hero we have, so why wouldn't we do that? That was sort of always the plan. How you tell that origin, perhaps there are ways to twist it or play with that, but for the most part, it's a gift when the comics have something with such clarity of story and of character. That doesn't always happen in the comics, and when it does, you use it."
  • Can’t say I disagree! He also confirmed that Rachel McAdams (Wedding Crashers) will have an important role (probably Clea, Dr. Strange’s girlfreind) and that Tilda Swinton will indeed be playing the part of a gender-switched The Ancient One (Dr. Strange’s teacher):
  • "[Rachel McAdams] plays a very, very big part in the movie and represents a certain point of view of the worlds that we experience in that movie, but Doctor Strange, without a doubt, is the character we follow through the movie… We get an amazing actress to play an amazing character, and do it in a way that's very unique and doesn't fall into any outdated stereotypes that sometimes pop up in the comics from years past. It's funny you ask 'Will Tilda Swinton be playing a woman?' and you ask it because she does an amazing job of being sort of ambiguous in terms of gender. I think you'll see us playing it in ways that she's played other characters that way. Clearly she's a woman, but it is very ambiguous in her portrayal."
  • Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4, 2016.

Furious 8:

  • Will Vin Diesel direct Furious 8? The social media mastermind and Iron Giant may have dropped a huge bomb regarding the next installment of the Fast & Furious franchise on Facebook earlier last week:

  • I love Diesel’s passion for his projects, but I think Universal would be out of their minds to give the potential billion dollar film to someone who’s never directed something of that magnitude before. Stranger things have happened, though! We’ll see!

Kingsman 2:

  • The hit that absolutely no one saw coming is getting a sequel after scoring an impressive $412.1 million at the box office! The Hollywood Reporter said that Fox is looking to start shooting in April 2016, even though they don’t even have a script yet! I still haven’t seen the original, but I’m not surprised at its turnout because Matthew Vaughn is probably the best/luckiest director for nerd-related movies in this generation. Hope he stays for the sequel!

Man of Steel 2:

  • Last month, rumors spiraled out of control after director John Schnepp (The Death of Superman Lives) claimed that Mad Max director George Miller will be directing the next standalone Superman film for Warner Bros. In a recent interview with Press Association, Miller stated the following on the subject:
  • “There’s been some of that in the mix, but I’d say probably not true. I’m really interested in that world because I’m interested in mythology and their superhero movies are the equivalent of a modern-day incarnation of the Greek and Roman gods. They’re exactly the same characters retold, and that’s always interesting.”
  • It’s not exactly a yes, but the optimist in me only sees the potential Miller-helmed Superman film being incredible and everything I’ve ever wanted. After the gigantic critical acclaim received by Mad Max: Fury Road, WB would be crazy to not back up a colossal van filled with millions of dollars into Miller’s driveway to make it happen. Please do it, George! Please give me the Superman movie I’ve always wanted!

Wolverine 3:

  • Wolverine 3 is approaching, and everyone and their mother knows that it’s going to be an adaptation of writer Mark Millar’s “Old Man Logan” story arc, even if Fox still won’t admit it. In that story, an old Wolverine travels across a dystopian America run by various villains, including Kingpin, Red Skull, and an inbred, hillbilly Hulk family. Unfortunately with the rights being what they are, Fox can’t exactly make a word for word adaptation of the book. But don’t worry! Millar coolly explained how things can still work without characters owned by Marvel Studios:
  • "They're not important to the story. The way I worked that thing is I actually structured it as, I broke it down mechanically - I figured out going from this part of America to that part of America and what he would encounter along the way, and then I added in the adversities later. Basically Wolverine doing The Road movie is the important thing and he has a friend [a blind Hawkeye] with him. But that friend could be Cyclops and he could be blind by the fact that his ruby-quartz visor is broken and he has to keep his eyes closed the whole time and everything, but still insists on driving the car they're crossing America with. There's lots of stuff. Instead of the Hulk, you could have the Blob or something.”
  • Whatever you say, Mark! Hopefully they’ll be a tad more creative than just subbing Blob in for Hulk, but I’ll be more than happy to watch old man Cyclops get in on the gory, gory action. Wolverine 3 is slated for March 3, 2017, and will be Hugh Jackman’s last go at the character.

And there you have it! Will you watch Kingsman 2? How do you feel about the Doctor Strange news? Should George Miller direct the next Superman? If not, then who?! Let us know! As always, be good to one another!
