TM Movie News: Hunger Games, Turtles and X-Men!

- by Steve Garcia, 15 December 2015

Happy Tuesday, my lovely Muties! Dystopias, gods, monsters, and trailers! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Picture

The Hunger Games:

  • With the trilogy (or is it technically a quadrilogy?) at a definite end, Lionsgate still plans to milk the cash cow that is The Hunger Games. Vice Chairman Michael Burns compared the franchise to Harry Potter, in that it will “live on and on.” Good for the studio, I suppose, but when asked about if she would reprise her role as Katniss Everdeen, Jennifer Lawrence give a pretty affirmative “no” with a reasonable explanation:
  • “I wouldn’t be involved. I think it’s too soon. They’ve got to let the body get cold, in my opinion.”
  • With one franchise contract finished and another one ending next year with X-Men: Apocalypse, I think it’s safe to assume she just wants a break. Good on her!

The Mummy:
  • With Universal seeking to push its shared monster movie universe with 2017’s The Mummy, it appears that both Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) are in final negotiations to star. According to The Hollywood Reporter, other potential horror icons to be featured in this universe include Dracula, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, the Bride of Frankenstein and vampire hunter Van Helsing. The Mummy is slated for March 24, 2017 and will be directed by Alex Kurtzman (People Like Us). Brendan Fraser is still nowhere to be found.

Thor: Ragnarok:

  • If there’s one thing that Marvel Studios does well, it’s recruiting talent. Originally reported by Variety, Oscar-winner Cate Blanchette (Cinderella) is in talks to star in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. While it is presently unknown which character she’ll be portraying, guesses range from Thor villains like the Enchantress and Hela, heroes such as the Valkyrie, and a even far-out potential cameo role as Thanos’s love interest, Death. Adding talent is never a bad thing, and when you consider that this film is packed with guest stars such as Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, this could be Marvel’s biggest film right next to Civil War. Looking forward to it!
