TM Movie News: Serving Food For Thought!

- by The Rajun Cajun, 28 November 2012

A rather short edition of movie news this week, but don’t worry, I got you guys covered on some pretty interesting headlines that’ll keep you thinking. Let’s get it started!

Picture

  • As usual, let’s talk about some comic book movies; The Amazing Spider-Man sequel news. Two semi-major news about this movie have been floating out there in the universe. First, they're talking about a costume change. I personally dug the design of the costume used in The Amazing Spider-Man (minus the yellow eyes), but this time around, they're looking to add some new details to it. The "big" detail that has been confirmed that the eyes on the mask will be bigger. That’s kind of cool, right? The other ASM2 news is that potential cast rumors have been shopped around. Brady Corbet (Funny Games) and Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) are allegedly in the running to play Harry Osborn, the role previously performed by James Franco in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Awesome thing that they’re adding Harry to the mix, because he and his father are major characters to the whole Spider-Man mythos. Hopefully, though, they won’t be turning him into a Green Power Ranger wannabe with a flying snowboard this time around. Seriously, did anyone enjoy that?

  • On the WB/DC side of comic book movie news, we have a nice confirmation and some potentially huge rumors flying around concerning Superman, Batman, and the Justice League:

  • First off, if you’re going to see The Hobbit in a standard movie theater (not IMAX), you will be treated to the new, longer Man of Steel trailer. Superman fans like me are highly anticipating this, and the more director Zack Snyder hypes it up, the closer I want it to be to The Hobbit premier.

  • Secondly, Henry Cavill, who will be portraying Superman in Man of Steel, has confirmed that he is signed on to do three more films as Superman. Of course we’re expecting some Man of Steel sequels, but will he be wearing the big red cape in the upcoming Justice League? We’ll see, but for right now, things are looking pretty good for that.

  • Lastly on this bit of DC movie news, fans have been asking where Batman will be in this Justice League movie business. Apparently, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises) is in talks to be Batman himself in the upcoming Justice League film. This has me concerned, though. No doubt, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a fantastic actor, and will no doubt give the role of Batman justice, but will he be Bruce Wayne, or will he be John Robin Blake, the character that Gordon-Levitt played in The Dark Knight Rises? And if they are going with the latter, will that mean that The Dark Knight trilogy takes place in the same universe as characters like Superman and Green Lantern? If so, just how is WB going to explain Superman’s absence when a masked terrorist threatened a major American city like Gotham with a nuclear bomb? Of course this is only a rumor, so take it with a grain of salt, but if this is for real, then this is going to be a pretty risky move as far as storytelling is concerned.

  • Speaking of The Hobbit and things that will be playing in front of it, if you go and see it in IMAX, you'll be treated to the first nine minutes of Star Trek: Into Darkness. In standard theaters, you’ll also be able to watch the new trailer for it as well, so there you go Star Trek fans. At this point, I don’t know what’s going to be better: The Hobbit, or the trailers and footage before The Hobbit.

  • While we’re talking about big space franchise, let’s talk Star Wars. Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX already have writers. Already? Awesome! Right off the bat, we're getting these writers, and that's fantastic because it looks like Disney is really trying to make this new trilogy the best that it could be. Laurence Kasdin, the writer of Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, along with Simon Kinberg, writer of X-Men: The Last Stand will be writing and producing both of these films. That’s great news (well the Kasdin part, anyway) because Episode V was the best Star Wars film ever, and I dare you to challenge me on that.

  • From Sci-Fi to Fantasy, let’s talk about Oz: The Great and Powerful. Recently there was this gigantic poster revealed on the movie, and it looks... Well, let me show you:

Picture

  • Ok, cool, right? But… I don’t know, haven’t I seen this before? Hmm… What live-action Disney movie that takes place in a faraway fantastic land does this remind me of…? Wait! I got it!

Picture

  • Bottom line is, they look identical, and that’s not cool. It’s the same designer on both of these movies, by the way, and if I’m being totally honest, this looks pretty bad on his part.
  • In the last and particularly interesting bit of news, let’s talk about this statement: "The most terrifying film you will ever experience." That's a pretty bold claim, right? Well, in 2013, it looks like we'll be getting it with Evil Dead. As we (should) know, this is the remake of the cult-classic Sam Raimi film starring Bruce Campbell, and this claim was on its newest poster:

  • Seeing as how both Raimi and Campbell are involved with this remake, it’d be hard for fans of the original to get angry at such a claim, let alone with the fact that it’s being remade at all. I mean, have you seen the trailer? It looks pretty damn amazing:

Anyway, that’s all he wrote, folks. Which bit of news do you find the most interesting? Are you excited to see Henry Cavill as Superman in four movies? Do you think Joseph Gordon-Levitt should be Batman in the Justice League movie? Will you be seeing "The Hobbit" in IMAX to get a glimpse of "Star Trek: Into Darkness"? And just how awesome is that trailer for "Evil Dead" and what about its heavy claim? Thanks for reading, and I’ll catch you later. RC signing off.
