TM Movie News: Shazam, Mutants, Hunger Games & LeBouf!

- by Steve Garcia, 8 September 2014

Happy Monday, my lovely Muties! Aliens and fairy tales? Super villains and time-traveling killing machines? The X-Men vs. Shia LeBouf?! Ridiculous headlines can mean one thing and one thing only, ladies and germs! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Picture

Alien Sleeper Cell:

  • When was the last time we had a good old fashion alien invasion movie with no superheroes to save the day and trash densely populated areas? Looks like the classic concept will be revisited soon enough, as director James McTeigue (V For Vendetta) is attached to Alien Sleeper Cell, a film that’s supposedly been in development since 2011. While the plot details have been kept under lock and key, it has been compared to the likes of The Bourne Identity in terms of thrilling suspense.

Hansel & Gretel:

  • This week in fairy tale movie adaptation news, Neil Gaiman’s Hansel & Gretel comic book is on the road to the big screen! And the book isn’t even out yet! Illustrated by Lorenzo Mattotti, the comic will be released on October 28, while the movie’s release date has yet to be announced. Bread crumbs, candy houses, and scary woodland witches, oh boy!

Man Down:

  • If you thought Shia LeBeouf’s acting career was over after the year he’s had, think again! He, Gary Oldman, and Kate Mara (House of Cards) will be starring in Man Down, a psychological thriller that follows an Afghanistan war veteran who learns a little something about himself as he searches for his family in a post-apocalyptic America.  Dito Montiel (Fighting) is set to direct, and production begins on October 30, 2014.

Shazam:

  • Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has officially announced that he will play the classic Captain Marvel villain Black Adam in the upcoming Shazam film! Check out his tweets below:

  • Following the casting news, New Line president Tony Emmerich dropped a few nuggets regarding the tone of the film, which seems to contradict claims that DC films have an absurd “no joke policy.” Shazam currently does not have a release date, but rumors suggest that it will be coming to theaters in 2016 along with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In the meantime, check out Emmerich’s word while updates continue to unfold!
  • "It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself. It's a DC comic, but it's not a Justice League character, and it's not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies. [Shazam] will have a sense of fun and a sense of humor. But the stakes have to be real. The villain in superhero movies is often, I think, what makes the movie. And I thought Dwayne's take on the character, and the way that he saw Black Adam, was really compelling and fun."

Terminator: Genisys:

  • Even if Terminator: Genisys is still filming as we speak, Paramount Pictures proudly announced that two sequels have been booked for May 19, 2017 and June 29, 2018. Anxious to get this franchise out of the gutter, it is widely assumed that these movies will be filmed back to back. Terminator: Genisys is set to release on July 1, 2015.

X-Men: Apocalypse:

  • The Apocalypse is upon us, Muties! Journal De Montreal confirmed that the upcoming X-Men sequel is set to start shooting in April 2015! A direct sequel to X-Men: Days of Future Past, the film is expected to bring back a mix of both older and newer cast members including Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, and James McAvoy. Other characters that are set to appear according to director Bryan Singer are a young Nightcrawler and Gambit, the latter portrayed by Channing Tatum. X-Men: Apocalypse will be coming to theaters on May 27, 2016!

And there you have it, my lovely Muties! Will you be picking up Gaiman’s Hansel & Gretel comic? Which actor would you cast in a full-scale alien invasion movie? Do you think The Rock has Black Adam covered? Let us know in the comments below, folks! As always, have an excellent week ahead and be good to one another!
