TM Movie News: Star Wars, Sinister Six, Krampus & more!

- by Steve Garcia, 5 May 2014

¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo, Trash Muties! Lots of random ground to cover today, along with all-important casting news and other snippets of info, so let’s get right to it! What’s Kevin Smith up to nowadays? Did the Fantastic Four reboot just get another villain? Now that the Justice League movie is confirmed, what else do they have on the backburner? Finally, which toy from your childhood is getting the live-action reboot treatment? All these questions and more will be answered RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW, my righteous readers! It’s MOVIE NEWS TIME!

Picture

Anti-Claus:

  • Here comes the Krampus! With Kevin Smith’s newfound passion for turning his SModco podcasts into low-budget films, it looks like Anti-Claus is next on the list! Here’s what the Clerks director had to say on what we can expect:
  • “When I was a kid, if they wanted to make a Christmas horror movie, they’d stick an axe in Santa’s hands. In ANTI-CLAUS, we leave Santa alone and creep with the Krampus through twisted tales of holly-jolly murder, desire, desperation, and despair. Just in time for the holiday season. In America, we’re taught that nice kids gets presents from Santa and naughty kids get coal. But in countries like Germany, Austria, Bavaria, Romania and Hungary, Christmas is more metal than merry: Saint Nicholas brings a sack full of toys for good kids and the Krampus carries an empty bag for taking away the bad kids. I wanna see THAT Christmas movie. So rather than wait for it, we’ll make it instead.”
  • Sony had just bought Smith’s last SModcast-based film, Tusk, which is slated to release later this year. Most of the cast from that film, including Justin Long (DodgeBall) and Michael Parks (Red State), will also be returning for Anti-Claus. Stay tuned!

Barbie:

  • Barbie’s getting a movie… Hey, if the Transformers can get a multi-billion, live-action, action-packed film franchise off the ground, it was only a matter of time before Barbie got her chance to do it too, right? Here’s what Tim Kiplin, executive vice president of global brands at Mattel, had to say about the upcoming film:
  • “Barbie has entertained children and inspired their imagination and creativity for more than 50 years. Now is the right time in Barbie’s celebrated history for her to star in a live-action, contemporary comedy that brings her playful personality to life for generations of fans.”

Blonde:

  • Potential Oscar-bait over here, Trash Muties! Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) is in negotiations to play Marilyn Monroe in Blonde, a movie based on a “quasi-biographical” novel. The film is set to begin production this August, and will be written and directed by Andrew Dominik (Killing Them Softly).

DC Cinematic Universe:

  • Just when you thought that WB couldn’t possibly catch up to the stuff that Marvel Studios has accomplished, The Wall Street Journal claims that they have nine films in development right now! Not including Batman/Superman and the now officially official Justice League, what can these other nine possibly be? The story claims that The Metal Men (really?), Captain Marvel (SHAZAM!), 100 Bullets, and Fables are four of them, but that still leaves five on the table! We know that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is developing the Sandman movie, Guillermo del Toro is still attached to Justice League Dark, but as far as what’s been officially reported? That’s about as far as it goes. For those hoping for a Wonder Woman movie, hope harder, because they were quick to confirming that her movie still isn’t ready… But there are tons of other possibilities, my lovely muties! Remember that David Goyer recently expressed interest in reigniting the Green Lantern, a while back there was a reported interest in a low-budget Suicide Squad movie, and we still got Arrow and the upcoming Flash TV series that, for all we know, can spark a feature film. All that’s certain is that stuff is coming, and that’s pretty awesome for what it’s worth!

Fantastic Four:

  • Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk) is supposedly in final negotiations to play the classic Fantastic Four villain, the Mole Man, in the upcoming reboot slated for next June. Since the film already has a Dr. Doom (played by Toby Kebbell), speculators believe it will be nothing but set-up fodder for the inevitable sequel. So stay tuned for the malicious Mole Man… If you wanna!

Goosebumps:

  • Did you know that they’re making a new Goosebumps movie? Here’s a synopsis for ya! It comes out on August 7, 2015!
  • “The Goosebumps movie will follow teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) who moves to a new town and meets a “beautiful girl,” Hanna (Odeya Rush). Hanna's father happens to be author of the Goosebumps book series, R.L. Stine (Jack Black). Zach discovers that the monsters in Stine’s stories are real, and are locked away from the world by writing about them. Upon accidentally unleashing the monsters, Zach, Stine and Hanna must get the monsters ‘back in the books where they belong.’”

The Jungle Book:

  • Jon Favreau’s CGI/live-action Jungle Book remake/reboot is coming closer and closer, as Scarlet Johansson and Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) are in final negotiations to join the cast. Remember folks—this is the fun Disney one with Idris Elba as the bad tiger! Not the dark one that’s gonna be directed by Andy Serkis! This one will be in a theater near you on October 9, 2015!

Justice League:

  • That’s right, ladies and gentlemen! Not only do we have official confirmation that the Justice League is filming back to back with Man of Steel 2, but that Zack Snyder will be directing it after all! This news came to light quickly after Variety reported that new-coming actor Ray Fisher will play Vic Stone in the upcoming (and still untitled!) Man of Steel sequel. For those of you unaware, Stone later becomes the superhero Cyborg after some horrible accident involving Darkseid and STAR Labs (which plays a role in the Superman mythos.) While the script is still being worked on, it wouldn’t be too farfetched to believe that the Justice League could come to us as early as 2017, being that it’ll be filming back to back with Man of Steel 2. Either way, this year’s San Diego Comic Con is gonna be a fun one! Looking forward to more announcements!

Star Wars: Episode VII:

  • The news we’ve all been waiting for! The cast has finally been set in stone! Check out the image below for a who’s who of both old faces and totally new ones who will be starring in the galaxy far, far away! But word has it that there’s still a strong female lead that they’re not giving us just yet, but until then, enjoy what we got! December 2015 can’t come soon enough, folks!

Terminator: Genesis:

  • Finally a bit of solid casting news! Former Dr. Who star Matt Smith will officially be playing a major role that is “a new character with a strong connection to John Connor.” Guess we’ll learn more as we approach that July 1, 2015 release date!

Watch Dogs:

  • You know how they’re working so hard on making the Deadpool movie happen? Well, we still don’t have it yet. But that won’t deter its screenwriters, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, to work Watch Dogs, the movie based on the game that hasn’t even come out yet! Next!

STUFF YOU SHOULD LOOK AT:

Jem and the Holograms:

  • They’re not wasting any time! We now have the core cast and an official poster for the Jem and the Holograms movie! Did I really just say that?! WHAT YEAR IS IT?! LOOK AT IT!

And that’ll do it for this week, ladies and germs! What do you think about the potential Sinister Six roster? Do you have any theories as to what the nine upcoming DC movies will be? Do you think Jessica Chastain can pull off an Oscar-winning Marilyn Monroe performance? Will you be checking out Anti-Claus? Let us know in the comments below and I’ll check you next time! Be good to one another!
