TM Movie News: The Pre-SDCC Edition!

- by Steve Garcia, 14 July 2014

Happy Monday, Trash Muties! San Diego Comic Con is only one more weekend away, and rather than bore you with details on the upcoming 50 Shades of Grey movie, I figured that it’d be fun to conjure up some predictions and speculations for the event! (Also, I really don’t want to write about the upcoming 50 Shades of Grey movie…) ANYWAY, I’ve got some thoughts and panel confirmations about upcoming confirmed and unconfirmed Marvel movies, a lowdown on the next Hobbit, the mystery that is Batman v Superman, and a whole lot more! Sit back and relax, ladies and germs—IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME! PRE-SDCC EDITION!

Picture

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice:

  • Ya know, for a comic book convention, it was quite interesting that Warner Brothers specifically didn’t mention the big bad Batman/Superman smackdown for their panels list… But that doesn’t mean we won’t be hearing about it! I sincerely doubt that we’ll be getting any sort of teaser, as shooting just started, but much like the BatFleck reveal and the latest image of Henry Cavill’s tweaked-up Superman suit, I’m willing to bet that we’ll get our first look at Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, a possible look at Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, and maybe even a new villain reveal at some point before Sunday! Would they be so bold to include the Joker? I’m calling it here, folks!
  • And that’s not all! Remember a few weeks back when that supposed leaked list of upcoming DC movies hit the web? Maybe there’s some truth to it, and we’ll get some confirmations! The list included a Captain Marvel (Shazam) movie, as well as a solo Wonder Woman spin-off, a true Man of Steel sequel, and a surprising Green Lantern/Flash team-up feature. As far as other potential Justice Leaguers go, Jason Mamoa is still being coy as ever regarding the recent Aquaman rumors, and we still don’t know which character that Dwayne Johnson was teasing a few months back. Fingers crossed that we don’t leave empty-handed!

The Fantastic Four:

  • Much like the seemingly forgotten Batman v Superman on WB’s shortlist of panels, Fox mysteriously left off both of their comic book properties: Fantastic Four and X-Men. No doubt that X-Men is the clear titan of Fox’s superhero catalogue, but it would be foolish of Fox to not take the opportunity of the huge crowd to present some sort of footage of the smaller and quickly-approaching FF reboot. According to an unnamed source by ScreenRant, director Josh Trank and the five main leads will indeed be showing up, causing this speculator to think that maybe this will be their surprise for the Con. Much like Batman v Superman, I’m not so sure that a full-on teaser is ready, but test footage is just bound to show up, as it’s in the middle of shooting. The Fantastic Four is slated to release on June 19, 2015, with a sequel already decided for July 14, 2017.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies:

  • The Hobbit is coming to Comic Con! On his very own Facebook page, director Peter Jackson confirmed that there will indeed be a trailer for those attending the panel, as he just finished putting together the teaser. Unfortunately for the rest of us, he added, we’ll just have to wait around October to take a look. The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies hits theaters on December 17, a trailer is probably all we’re going to get at SDCC, and that’s all I have to say about that!

Leprechaun: Origins:

  • Because you demanded it! WWE Films will also have an unexpected presence at SDCC, and they’re showcasing Leprechaun: Origins starring Hornswoggle. They also plan on lifting the curtains on See No Evil 2 starring Kane… But who cares? LEPRECHAUN! And it even has its first trailer already, so what more can they give us?! Check it out:

Mad Max: Fury Road:

  • A movie that’s been through development hell for the better part of three years, Mad Max: Fury Road will finally have some footage to show at this year’s SDCC with director George Miller running the panel! While we still have an entire summer to go before this one comes to theaters, Miller dropped a few tidbits of knowledge regarding the lack of CGI and a glimpse of the synopsis in the May issue of Entertainment Weekly. In it, he described that around 80% of the film uses practical effects, a 116 day shoot was exclusively in the desert, and how the movie doesn’t even rely on heavy dialogue to give you “an intense, emotional experience.”

Marvel Studios:

  • As of right now, the only three Marvel movies confirmed for love at SDCC are Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Ant-Man. Since Guardians will be so close to its release date by then, I predict that a much bigger focus will be placed on what the fans are dying for most: more Avengers. Much like how footage was shown at New York Comic Con back in 2011, panel participants will most likely be granted a first real look at the upcoming sequel, and maybe even a first look at Ultron himself.
  • But if you think for a second that they’ll stop at the Avengers, you don’t know squat! Dr. Strange rumors have been all over the internet since it was announced that Scott Derrickson (Sinister) will be directing, and he hasn’t been shy of expressing his love for the character either! If we don’t get confirmation on who will be playing the good doctor (which I doubt this early in the game), I’m positive we’ll at least be getting an official release date.
  • Speaking of which, there are also two more unannounced Marvel movies that SDCC can still grace us with! With Captain America 3 confirmed for May 2016, the safe bet is that Thor 3 will go side by side with it later in the year, leaving Dr. Strange and a mystery film open for 2017. Fans have been clamoring for Black Panther and Ms. Marvel films, but seeing as how Marvel Studios has such an extensive library of relatively obscure and unknown characters and teams like the aforementioned Guardians of the Galaxy, I wouldn’t count the Runaways, the Inhumans, or even Moon Knight out of the running. Of all the panels announced so far, Marvel’s got me the most giddy!

And there we have it, my righteous readers! Will you be attending this year’s San Diego Comic Con? Which panel has you most excited? Do you think it was odd for Batman v Superman and Fantastic Four to be left out of WB and Fox’s schedules? What are you hoping to see come out of the Hobbit panel? What’s your opinion on the Mad Max sequel and Leprechaun prequel? Finally, what surprises do you think we’ll be getting from the Marvel Studios panel? Let us know! That’ll do it for this week, ladies and gentlemen! Be good to one another, and I’ll see you after the Con!
