TM Movie News: Venom, 23 Jump Street/MiB & more!

- by Steve Garcia, 7 March 2016

Happy Monday, my lovely Muties! IT’S MOVIE NEWS TIME!

23 Jump Street/Men In Black Crossover:

  • While the surprise might’ve been ruined by the infamous Sony hack, the 21 Jump Street franchise will indeed be colliding with Men In Black in the threequel. While the plot itself is still secret, a director may have been found in James Bobin, who did The Muppets for Disney in 2012. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum will be back in their roles, however Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will not be reprising MIB Agents Jay and Kay, respectively. As a fan of both franchises, I’m definitely skeptical on the combination that Sony’s going for, but I’ll more than likely be buying my ticket when it comes. No dates have been decided yet, but my money is on summer 2018. Stay tuned!

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice:

  • Whether you like the realism that Zack Snyder is bringing to the DC Superheroes onscreen or not, you have to admit the ambition is sort of respectable. While this isn’t exactly news per se, Snyder spoke up about why there’s just no winning for Superman in the world built by Man of Steel:
  • “Over the last two years he’s basically been Superman as pop culture would know him. He’s been righting wrongs, there have been floods, mines have collapsed, bridges have collapsed, churches have caught on fire. He’s basically been a hero. When we find him, he’s been dealing with the everyday world of being a superhero, but there’s a paradigm shift happening in that the unintended consequences of some of those rescues are starting to come into fruition. He’s starting to see that every action has a reaction. Like, if you’re just taking a cat out of a tree, you can’t touch anything or the arborists will say, ‘He damaged the tree branch when he got the cat down.’ Or, ‘The cat wasn’t neutered, so now there’s thousands of cats.’ There’s no winning anymore for Superman.”
  • Like I said, whether you like the realism or not in your DC superhero films, you have to admit the accuracy, as this is exactly what would happen if Superman was living among us mere mortals. Batman v Superman hits theaters on March 25, 2016, and if you’ve got any plans on watching it, you might wanna grab those tickets already!

Tomb Raider:

  • Get ready for the Tomb Raider reboot! In the works since 2011, Norwegian director Roar Uthaug (The Wave) is officially attached to the project. Joining him is writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who is currently writing Transformers 5 for Paramount. The film will reportedly be based on the most recent games, and in an interview with IGN, Uthaug is all about strong female characters. It’s been almost 15 years since those Angelina Jolie movies, and with video game movies like Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed, and Ratchet and Clank on the way soon, it was only a matter of time before audiences were graced with Laura Croft’s weirdly proportioned PS1 body again. Coming soon!

Venom:

  • Venom’s getting his own franchise! After Deadpool broke R-rated records at the box office, it was only a matter of time before other darker comic book properties followed suit. We’re still uncertain if it will be rated R, but producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will be overseeing the project, and it sounds as if Venom will be completely on its own, away from the upcoming 2017 Sony/MC U Spider-Man reboot. Edge of Tomorrow’s Dante Harper has been tasked to pen a script. It’s unknown whether or not this will be Eddie Brock (the original Venom) or Flash Thompson (the current Venom) under the alien symbiote, but it’s a safe bet that, whoever it is, will probably be fighting Carnage when it’s all said and done. If this doesn’t sound like a 90’s wet dream, I don’t know what does.

And there you have it! Will we get the respectable Tomb Raider movie we need? Do you think the 21 Jump Street/MIB crossover is a good idea? What is your 90’s comic book wet dream movie pitch? Let us know! As always, be good to one another!
