TM Movie News: Wizards, Witches, Heroes & Star Wars

- by Steve Garcia, 18 November 2013

Slow news week, but I got you covered, Trash Muties! When is Star Wars coming out? Why does the new Noah’s Ark movie look so epic? What’s going on with Jurassic World? Who’s gonna be in the Batman/Superman movie this week?! It’s Movie News Time!

Picture

The Conjuring 2 and Annabell:

  • When cheap movies make truckloads of money, you can be sure that there will be a sequel--and a spinoff! While the writers are hard at work writing a sequel to the surprise hit, it was recently announced that The Conjuring will get a spinoff film that revolves around Annabell, that creepy doll that was featured in the first film. John R. Leonetti is set to direct, and filming on the spinoff will begin in Spring 2014. Because The Conjuring was awesome, expect this one to be awesome, because movies about creepy dolls are awesome! Horror fans rejoice!

Jurassic World:

  • I guess I spoke too soon, because it looks like Josh Brolin is no longer attached to star in the long-awaited Jurassic Park sequel. Exactly why this is has yet to be seen, but fear not, righteous readers! According to recent and legitimate sources, Chris Pratt (The Lego Movie, Parks and Recreation, Guardians of the Galaxy) is in talks to star now! It’s a shame they lost Brolin, but with Pratt on board, I’m now officially pumped because he’s fantastic! Life finds a way!

Man of Steel sequel:

  • Until we get an official poster, I refuse to call this movie Batman vs. Superman! Many, many source-less rumors and wild speculations have hit the web concerning this upcoming sequel within the last few weeks, but finally we just got something pretty concrete. Take a look at this tweet made by the film’s producer, Daniel Alter:

  • Very interesting, considering that Zack Snyder has been pretty tight-lipped lately. Aside from the obvious nod to the Bat-drones via Mark Waid and Alex Ross’s Kingdom Come, we now have confirmation that Robin actually exists in this new DC Cinematic Universe, and apparently he and Batman had some sort of a falling out. On a semi-related note, actor Steven McQueen has confirmed that he will be playing Nightwing on an upcoming episode of Arrow. Currently, the events of the TV series have been standalone alongside the events that took place in Man of Steel, so saying these two things are connected is pure speculation at this point. But with the slew of guest superhero stars that are set to appear on Arrow this season, along with the soon-to-be released Man of Steel sequel on the horizon, now would be the perfect time to bridge the show with the movies to give us that huge DCCU that Marvel has seemed to have perfected!

  • In other, smaller, Man of Steel news, Snyder more or less confirmed that Lex Luthor will indeed be the main villain in the sequel, as he stated “Lex loves to call [Superman] alien,” at a recent Q&A session hosted by Kevin Smith. In that same vein, Smith reported that Snyder showed him a picture of Ben Affleck in the official Batsuit they plan to use in the film, and he claimed that we’ve never seen this costume in a live action film (after an intense nerdgasm, of course). According to Smith, it isn’t armored this time around, so which one will it be? Jim Lee’s? The one in The Dark Knight Returns? Batman: Noel? Batman of Zur-En-Arrh?!

Star Wars: Episode VII:

  • Star Wars fans can now formally mark their calendars for December 18, 2015! Check out the official statement by Disney:

  • “With pre-production in full-swing, a confirmed release date of December 18, 2015, has been set for Lucasfilm’s highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII. We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday film-going season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture,” said Alan Horn, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios.
  • Star Wars: Episode VII will be directed by J. J. Abrams (Super 8, Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek) and is being scripted by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi). Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, with Tommy Harper (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Jack Ryan, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds) serving as executive producers. John Williams is returning to score Star Wars: Episode VII. Shooting is scheduled to begin spring 2014 at Pinewood Studios.”
