Who Likes Short Shorts?

- by Ninja Ross, 26 January 2013

I like short shorts! Short films, that is! I have a serious love of films. A love that borders on creepy. Films have a restraining order. This is how much I love films. But short films are kind of a phenomenon all on their own. They're nowhere near as long as regular films and yet so many of them manage to contain the same amount of beauty, comedy, story and passion! Yes, you're used to looking to Rajun Cajun for movie stuff but I'm here to put my useless media qualification to good use! I'm here to help you, readers. Accept my help.

Kicking off this handful of great short films is one of my favourites.

MOCKINGBIRD (DIRECTED BY MARICHELLE DAYWALT)

You know by now that I quite like horror, right? So it stands to reason that I’d enjoy the vast amount of horror short films filling the net. Unfortunately, they’re not all good. Some of the creators try to emulate the big budget films they love some much.

This one, however, creates horror using four characters (only two on screen) and a monitor. The use of sound and dialogue, as well as the reaction of the two on screen character is what creates the horror. No gore, effects, nothin’.

Next up is an animation starring Nick Cave.

THE CAT PIANO (DIRECTED BY EDDIE WHITE AND ARI GIBSON)

You may have seen this one, it’s one of the most popular short animations around but even if you have, it’s worth watching again.

What we got here is (...a failure to communicate! Sorry...) a jazz infused, slightly noir animation about cats. We follow one specific cat, the narrator, as he tries to solve the mystery of disappearing cats. It’s award winning for a reason, folks.

And now some delightful puppets!

DON'T HUG ME, I'M SCARED (DIR. BY BECKY SLOAN AND JOSEPH PELLING)

Yeah... There’s not much that needs to be said about this. It’s interesting and funny but this is one of those things that speaks for itself.

How about an execution?

TUNE FOR TWO (BY PRIMODROM)

Have you ever smiled while watching a man kill another man? Whistled along as the Hitman buries the body? Well, you have now!

The gritty setting and characters, the dark and dirty colours and the subject itself help give the “tune” a kind of eerie feeling. The comedy itself comes from the absurdity of it all.

It’s a funny one, that’s for sure. One worth watching when you’re not in a good mood, just to cheer you up a bit.

Another animation, folks!

MAC 'N' CHEESE (BY COLORBLEED STUDIOS)

Now isn’t that the greatest game of tag ever? Although, Trash Mutant does not condone drug induced tag. Unless you film it!

The best things about this short is how the sound works with each sequence, pumping up the adrenaline. It’s fast, it’s furious and it’s also well done and fun.

That’s it for now. There’s a whole bunch of great shorts I haven’t put on here. Maybe I’ll do another list. Maybe you can find your own shorts. These are my shorts.
